Does anyone else wonder why each club would not have a specialist long kicker?

I mean a guy who is no good at all at anything else but he is great at finding touch in a 20/40 or 40/20 scenario and spends 95% of practice working on that one skill. Possibly a soccer goal keeper (they are big and have a strong kick, or even an AFL player).

Coach him to be as competent in defense as a half back and wouldn't he already be way more valuable that almost every half back in the game now?

This is the kind of thing I think about.
How much better than Moses would this mythical kicker be? Not much, I reckon. Moses has a pretty good boot.

That's the question.
He would have to be a lot better than Moses to be able to justify a spot without contributing much elsewhere. This 20/40 is brand new so I doubt clubs have explored it much.
Anyway check out my pod cast. Viper-zone.

Are you proposing a kick-off ?

Seeing that BA did not use his 17th man last game, your idea certainly has merit, particularly in an unlimited interchange environment. I assume that this is part of your cunning plan ?

No, I am not sure tactically how it would end up. Just wondering if with the new rule there might be room for a specialist like Glenn McGrath. Useless at everything except one really important thing.

Having a player that is solely in the team for kicking is a f**ken disaster, it’s why halves that don’t run don’t make it in the NRL. The opposition will know he won’t run so they wouId just smash him, so easy to defend.....won’t work.....

And the reason some players are half backs is because back in under 10’s the coach saw them as having the better kicking ability then the other players, so no idea where these “specialists” kick players are coming from! They have already been identified....

While NRL half backs do spend a shit load of time practising their kicking....

Step 2: allow a line of players to stand at the ruck to stop, or ‘block’ defenders. Then allow one forward pass per play, usually by the halfback (perhaps to avoid confusion with other backs, we can change it to half-a-half back) and usually to quick guys who ‘receive’ the pass in a ‘wide’ position. Then if you lose possession, you should be allowed to bring on all your good defenders. A team for defence if you will. Plus to mitigate concussion problems, players should wear helmets

Those are the changes endorsed by former tennis star John Newcombe. We could even call this rugby league variant Newcombe Ball.

I haven't suggested any rule changes here (in this instance), just looking at ways of taking advantage of existing rules. I doubt the coaches in the NRL would have thought of this. Maybe they have and have rejected it. But I doubt it.

Manchester United goal keeper EDISON in 2018 set the world record for longest drop kick of a soccer ball - 75 metres. That's a long way. I recon on the full Moses could only kick a rugby league ball about 50m.

Well here we are. Very early in the season.
The man who was backed by many to take over as Eels head Coach being J Holbrook versus the stability of BA who has had 7 years to not only assemble "his team" but to also put in place his processes and ideas about how "Rug-ba-league" should be played.
The Titans in game one started poorly but did fight back. The Titans are also without a few of their high priced players. Be that as it may The Eels face many of their demons this Sunday.
We have not been great on the road nor are we great at doubling up wins. We are also not great at winning those games we are expected to win. Its also a great unknown how players will respond with no crowds in attendance.
Great defence from our Eels last game but very scratchy with the ball. No injurys and at full strength. Has BA changed the teams mindset? Is this a revitalised, rejuvenated and restructed Eels team we can confidently predict will turn up in any circumstance?
Titans a bits and pieces roster coached by a guy fronting up for his second only NRL game. Lets see how Mr Holbrook fares. I personally think hes a great talent. It should be enthralling.
No excuses boys. Lets go.

There's an AFL player who can kick it 70m. Not bad for a ball with f**ked aerodynamics.
