if it means winning the f*cking thing, i'm happy (in fact i'll p*ss myself laughing) if we win 30-nil courtesy of 15 penalty goals.

in fact, if we fail to score another try this finals series & still win it i'd p*ss myself.

the carry-on in the game-day thread is hilarious. such angst, such knowledge but such self abuse!

I had a Manly supporter sitting behind me shouting each time Soward pointed to the posts "What's wrong Soward you cat, can't you crack our defence?"

Ahh, the irony. Needless to say he copped a bit as he was walking out with 10 minutes to go!

I've been told my team is boring, do you think I care if we win 2-0? Not at all. How did exciting work out for the Tigers on the weekend? Or the Bunnies the week before?

When it comes to semis, I'll take winning ugly over losing pretty any day of the week. We've done it all year and it got us a minor premiership, no reason why it can't deliver a premeiership

- Im not a massive fan of kicking penalty goals, I would if we had Halligan or ElMazri, but Soward is a pretty low % kicker, but if its fairly in front, then sure.. but I was really happy that Soward hit the first 4 or so (that got us to an 8pt lead), after that it didnt matter that he started missing, and next year hopefully Stanley will kick for us!

- Also there is the thing of losing momentum, when you have the opposition on toast, and there are a lot of times I think the Dragons should take a crack at the line and make the opposition tackle/sweat.. but.. hey.. im not the coach, if theyre happy to slow the game down because it suits the team, then sure thing.. shoot penalties..

- Lastly, the Manly game was a grinding game with crap offence from Manly, 2 pts was fine, I would feel differently in one of those games where Hayne or Dugen or someone is really peppering us and its clear that we need to score points to win + keep the ball away from the opposition.

Haters gonna hate.

I couldn't give a sh*t if we win our next game 1-0 after 79 minutes of the most boring, uninspiring league ever seen. I especially don't give a sh*t about what opposition fans think of us as a team. Winning that freakin Premeirship is all the matters.

I think the main disadvantage of us ALWAYS taking the 2 is that other teams are onto it. If the opposition had just defended 3 or 4 sets straight and were out on their feet, they may give away a penalty as they know they will get a rest, basically sacrificing 2 points for a breather.

I would like us to not take the 2 just once to put some doubt in the oppositions mind

Or REALLY flogg a dead horse taking shots at goal, to the point of monotenous regularity ..... THEN in a really big game see, when they can't go away and prepare differently next week, they give away a penalty knowing we will take the 2 ...... but then we don't. ;-)

2 goals = 1 try.

If you can get an easy shot from in front that gives you half a try with no risk or effort needed, especially in finals footy, you take it.

If you can get 4 shots a goal, bonus!

As Wayne says: we are here to win, who cares how.

Or a copy of the Panthers Vs Canberra game last weekend would be good enough. Panthers didn't take a penalty goal from right in front, and lost the ball in that set. They lost by 2 points.

I somehow think that the penalty just before half time forced our hand in taking the 2. There was 1 min to go. if there was 3 min left im sure we would have gone for the try. Then in the 2nd half, we got another penalty and the 2 point gave us a converted try in front and the one after made sure Manly had to score more than 3 times to win.

has any1 opted for a penalty goal, lined it up and then just tapped it with their foot and ran?? I reckon that would be pretty good as the defense wouldn't be set properly and Soward could just use his speed and run around em

SuperSoward... after Covell purposely missed to waste time, the rules are that you have to have a legitimate attempt on goal.

The Roosters also took a penalty goal for their first 2 points. I haven't heard anyone criticising them and those 2 points were extremely valuable at the end of 80 minutes.

I think you can line up the shot and not take it BUT you need to kick it more than 10 metres.
I think the opposition would know what is going on when they see all players in a straight line behind the kicker.
Although................. if you opted to take it from the sideline and everyone was waiting near the posts and you chipped it up the touchline, regathered and then scored in the corner there might not be a rule forbidding that.

Back in the day, when I was playing rugby (union) at Uni, I took the goal kicking duties most games. In a particular match we were given a penalty about 15mts out. I got thrown the ball, walked up to the ref, pointed at the posts and said "we're not taking the shot", they dropped their guard, I tapped, ran and scored. I think that sort of move has been outlawed in Union now. I got the idea from Micheal Lynah as he once mentioned it in an interview.

Not too sure how it would go down in an NRL Final, then again, we did get away with the Mousetrap :)

Not sure but I thought I have seen teams (this might have been in union but doesn't really matter that much) say they were going for a shot but then took a quick tap. They hadn't got out the kicking tee.

Given our tactics, we should really invest in signing Morne Steyn (sp?), the South African rugby union goalkicker .... he is currently on a run of something like 50+ consecutive goals, and he nails them from ANYWHERE all the way up to 10m on his own side of halfway ... when you add the angle at the sideline.
