Okay, he's a 5/8th, but if Arana Tomato can stay off the sauce (see what i did there) I think he's NZ quality.
After watching what he did for the Maoris against the aborigines before the WC last year, I predicted he'd play next to Benji in the 4 nations this year after playing a very loose role for a structured Melbourne side who'd go deep into the semis and have had some absolute niff nuffs in rep teams lately. Obviously he didn't get to play any footy so that went out the window pretty fast, but the point remains.
This blokes' footwork is through the window. If Sheens can get him working with Benji we'll have a very very good partnership. He's not a halfback in the classic mould which, as most of you know, I'm in love with as it brings consistent footy. But as we've seen, it takes flair, form and luck to win this comp and he and Benji have it, especially if Farah can help control.
It'll either go really wrong, or really right - just as it did when we had another flair/loose player in Prince controlling the team. But at least with Taumata we have a first class player. Something which only the most deluded here would dare to suggest Moltzen is at the moment.
I doubt Sheens will chuck them in and get them playing together, but he managed it with Prince and stuck with it so let's see what happens. If he does, I'll believe we can win the comp (counting on signing a prop and fullback here) and that Taumata and Benji will be the halves in the 2011 Pac Cup.
I may be wrong, but the only evidence we have so far is that Moltzen simply isn't up to the task - aka goes missing - when the going gets tough. It's not hard to score a few trys when your team goes forward. Putting someone else over when you're team really needs it is what wins Premierships.
