Canberra Raiders skipper Alan Tongue has joined his team mate Phil Graham in camp at Coffs Harbour with NSW Country, after he was called in as 18th man for the side last night.
Tongue was finally rewarded for his outstanding past 18 months of football, and said even though he may not play, he is still looking forward to what should be a great few days in camp with some great coaches and players.
"It’s a pat on the back for me I suppose, after all the hard work you put in at training and away from the paddock I suppose it is a bit of a reward," Tongue said. "At the moment I’m 18th man so I probably won’t play but saying that it’s still a fantastic experience which I can learn from and hopefully bring something back to the Raiders."
Tongue said he looked forward to seeing how Phil Graham plays on Thursdsay night and is excited about the confidence the game should give him. Tongue said the difference representative football made to former team mate Adam Mogg last year was amazing, and he hoped to see that in Phil and hopefully some other Raiders later in the year.
"Adam Mogg was the prime example because when he cane back from State of Origin last year he was a different player, and hopefully Phil can learn from this game and bring something back as well," he said. "It’s great to see the Raiders players get some recognition and hopefully guys like Neville Costigan can follow this into Origin for Queensland."
Alan Tongue was the Raiders player of the year in 2006, and broke the NRL’s all time tackling record for a season, busting through the 1000 mark during the season.
Phil Graham was called into the Country side on Monday afternoon, after the withdrawal of Parramatta’s Timana Tahu through a hamstring injury

Well done to Tonguey, no news on whether he'll play tonight so I guess he might miss out.

Possibly, but they don't tend to call up an 18th player for nothing so I guess he will have a game :) Not so sure if this is a good thing for this weekend, but then I suppose Manly will have a few playing so that should even things up a little bit.

they ALWAYS call up an 18th man for reprsentative fixtures like this.

he wont be playing unless there is an injury, which there hasnt been.

Tongue got a call-up last night? Says who? There was no mention made of that!

Damn this to hell! Drats this! sh*t on this then!

Well, there goes my letter to the editor to Big League then!

I didn't hear Alan Tongue mentioned at all.

I just e-mailed big league about that very issue....look.

Letters Editor, Big League Magazine

What more has Alan Tongue got to do to earn himself a representative jersey?
For the CRL selectors to overlook him is a kick in the guts.
How's he going to get a start for the blues when he can't even get a run-on game for Country versus City?

I applaud Alan Tongue though as he didn't act selfish by blaming something so trivial as racism for not being selected.

The guy's all heart and his workrate speaks for itself. All hard work is supposed to pay off, so what's the go in this case? Is it because he's not a glamour player? Is that it? Not being a pin-up boy like Braith or What's-his-name? How shallow!

Even in defeat (against Cronulla) he was brave enough to give a few minutes of his time to explain the pitfalls of that game.
Alan Tongue is a champion in my books and he should be rewarded for being a leader.
I also think somebody owes him an apology and an explanation! He must also be wondering what he's doing wrong as well!

Big League'll think I'm a real turquiose for this one!
Unbelievable man.

I only watched about 30 minutes of this game. If he was 18th man then that means he was only on stand-by right? He didn't actually don the jumper last night did he?

It was like.....Hoffman for Australia replacing Anthony Tupoe the other night right? 18th man doesn't actually get his hopes up to play right?
It still don't mean anything does it?

should've been in front of fitzfloppin & Newton.

Why did they pick old guys who are zero chance of playing origin? Why not give the young blokes who are the future a game? possibles vs probables

I have no idea why they picked Fiztgibbons at prop. I would've thought (with my green glasses on) that someone like Thommo would've been a better choice.
