Miners to shout if Crushers surprise
CHARTERS Towers coach Jeff Burton joked his club was thinking about "putting on a keg" for Mark Chiesa and his Herbert River team if the Crushers managed to upset Townsville and Districts Rugby League finals hopefuls Brothers tonight.
If the hapless Crushers manage to down the Brethren, the Miners will be guaranteed a place in the 2003 finals, regardless of the result of their match against Burdekin tomorrow, or of results in next weekend's final round.
If the butchers'-stripes prevail, the top four will not be decided until the final round, with the Towers, Burdekin, University and Brothers all fighting for three semi-final spots.
"We'd love the 'River to get up on Saturday," Burton said. "We were having a joke this week that we'd put a keg on if Chiesa's boys did."
Such a result seems unlikely, though, with the Brethren never an easy assignment on their home ground, let alone when Subway Premiership survival is at stake.
While tonight's match will provide some interest, the undoubted clash of the round kicks off at the sports reserve at 3.30pm tomorrow.
The second-placed Miners are one win ahead of the fourth-placed Roosters, but have the no-points bye in the last round, upping the importance of this game.
"We're all feeling pretty confident and know this game, like plenty of others, is pretty much sudden-death for us," Burton said.
He added that he wasn't concerned about trailing at halftime, a position the Miners have found themselves in on more than one occasion during their seven-game winning streak.
"I don't really even think they've been slow starts as such," he said.
The Miners will be without damaging prop Mick Casey (Young Guns duties but now out with illness), while elusive fullback Luke Walker is in serious doubt with a virus. Utility Stephen Taylor will likely throw on the No. 1 jersey while back-rower Barrett Wherry remains on the sidelines with a broken foot.
Burdekin co-coach Mal Barnes said the Roosters were all fighting fit and had trained well this week.
"We went up to Townsville on Tuesday and trained at Strand Park, which we sometimes do for the Townsville-based blokes in the side," he said.
The team will be without Simon Phillips, who has been named in the Young Guns starting line-up to take on the Central Comets tonight.
In the early match of tomorrow's sports reserve double-header, Centrals can wrap up the minor premiership with a win over Sharks United.

THE Burdekin Roosters are a win against strugglers Sharks away from qualifying for the Townsville and Districts Rugby League finals series after a barnstorming 38-26 win over Charters Towers at the sports reserve yesterday.
Led by Noel Goldthorpe's astute kicking game, the fleet-footed brilliance of five-eighth Mark Watson and a forward pack that simply didn't quit, the Roosters ran in seven tries to five and consolidated a 22-14 halftime lead.
"We really put our hand up today," Burdekin co-coach Chris Perry said after the game.
"All week the guys have been switched on for this game, and it was one of our best in terms of playing as a team."
Perry also lauded a pack that was without inspirational leader Damien Lynch -- who suffered a severe cork -- for most of the match.
"To play 80 per cent of the game without Lynchy and win like that was an excellent effort," he said.
Burdekin did indeed lead from the front against a Miners team racked with injury and illness.
Halfback Noel Haslam played on one leg for the entire game and was a virtual passenger in defence, while a nasty dose of the flu had about seven players well below their best.
Foley Shield representative lock Brad McNamara and reserve Garth Taiters did the bulk of the damage right through the middle for Burdekin, with McNamara crossing for the opening try in the seventh minute.
He broke the line almost immediately after the restart, but it was the first of several occasions where poor finishing cost the Roosters a first-half blowout, such was their early dominance.
Trailing 10-0, the Towers hit back after a beautiful inside ball from Haslam found a rampaging Shaun Casey who took several defenders over the line with him.
The sides scored two more tries apiece in a frenetic opening 40, with the Roosters leading 22-14.
The Miners struck first after the break, with winger Derek Musk on the end of a sweeping backline movement, Luke Walker's sideline conversion bridging the gap to two points.
But that was to be the Miners' high point in the match as the Roosters continued to exploit a weak left-side defence with former National Rugby League flyer Tarin Bradford having arguably his best game since returning to rugby league several weeks ago.
Goldthorpe's variety in his kicking game proved a headache, while Watson scored a hat-trick of tries.
The result ended the Miners' seven-game winning streak and could have put paid to their season if next weekend's results go against them.
With the no-points bye in the final round, the Towers need either of Herbert River or Centrals to win their matches against University and Brothers respectively.
If both games go against them, their season is over.
"We'll train this week regardless, you've got to," Miners coach Jeff Burton said.

In the earlier game at the sports reserve, Centrals had a lopsided win over Sharks (74-12) while Brothers accounted for Herbert River 42-16 on Saturday night.

Towers wait and see
BROTHERS and University have it all to play for, while Charters Towers can only sit and wait to see if the cards fall in their favour.
That's the basic scenario facing three clubs all desperate to make the Townsville and Districts Rugby League finals series starting next weekend.
In this weekend's final round, the Saints can qualify for their first finals series in eight years with a win in Ingham over a Herbert River team with just hometown pride to play for, while perennial finalists Brothers face a daunting task in having to beat minor premiers and defending champions Centrals.
Both games are to be played tomorrow and both will have a bearing on whether Charters Towers' week spent on the training paddock was a waste of time.
Although they're not playing this weekend, the Towers will be sweating on the results tomorrow.
If both University and Brothers win, the Towers are finished, while a result either way will qualify them for the finals in fourth place.
If Herbert River and Centrals prevail, Charters Towers will finish third, forcing University and Brothers into a mid-week playoff for fourth place.
"I think we're ready to roll," University coach John Fuller said yesterday.
"Facing Herbert River away to keep your season alive is a scary prospect but we are very motivated.
"If we can't win this match, then we don't deserve to be in the finals."
Fuller's team goes into the match at close to full strength, with winger Nime Kapo (hamstring) to be replaced on the edges by under-19 player Richard Watson.
The Saints' last foray into finals football was in 1995, the team going all the way to take the premiership, defeating Charters Towers in the grand final.
Since then, the closest they have got was a midweek playoff loss to Centrals in 1999, who went on to win the premiership.

In tomorrow's Centrals-Brothers match at Jack Manski Oval, Centrals will be without centre pairing Glenn Butler and Chris Brown (leg injuries), while Foley Shield prop John Beldan (leg) remains doubtful.
Tigers coach Grant Bell said regardless of the importance of the match, it was shaping up as a cracker.
"If you take everything out, Brothers-Centrals are always great games," Bell said.
"This is also a big game for us. Going into the finals, it's very important how well you are playing."
Apart from injuries, Centrals will be missing prop Grant Reibel, who was called into the Young Guns team to play Norths tomorrow.
Reibel, though, will qualify for the Subway Premiership finals series after playing at least three games for Centrals in the last seven.

Round 21 got off to a predictable start last night, with Burdekin too strong for Sharks United, winning 78-7.

When was the field goal kicked ? Why would you bother in a game you lose by 70+ points, unless someone was trying to get their name in the scoring records for the first time I s'pose ....

Crushers end Uni's season
BROTHERS have stormed into the Townsville and Districts Rugby League finals series while University's charge was stopped dead in its tracks in a dramatic weekend of football.
Needing a win over arch-rivals Centrals to qualify, the Brethren saved their best footy for crunch-time, an excellent completion rate and punishing defence steering the team to a stunning 46-14 victory over the defending premiers at Jack Manski Oval yesterday.
In Ingham, the Crushers put a happy ending on their frustrating year, downing University 40-30, after leading 34-30 with eight minutes to go.
The combined results put Brothers into third, while Charters Towers -- who had the bye this weekend -- held on to fourth spot.
It was a cruel exit to the competition for University, who spent the greater part of the season in the top two, and even led in the Subway Premiership race at stages.
But losses in three of their past four games conspired to deny the team a final berth for yet another year.
But University's loss was Charters Towers gain, with the Miners in the unusual situation of training all week without knowing for certain they would finish in the top four.
But one of the two results they needed fell their way, setting up a knockout semi-final clash with Brothers next weekend.
Centrals will play Burdekin in the major semi, the Roosters wrapping up their regular season with a 78-7 win over Sharks United in Ayr on Friday.
Brothers coach Scott Saddler couldn't fault his team's performance yesterday, the home side jumping away to a 24-0 lead after 30 minutes.
"We completed our first 13 sets and didn't make a mistake until the 23rd minute," Saddler said.
"With footy like that, you're going to have most sides on the back foot."
Brothers back-rowers Scott Dowd, Neil Stanley and Dennis Conlon were outstanding for the victors, with all three getting through plenty of defence while also playing key hands in attack.
The stocky Conlon made several punishing runs through centre-field, while Stanley added some attacking flair to his well-credentialled tackling.
Regarded as one of the competition's best defenders -- regularly making 40-plus tackles a game -- Stanley combined with fullback Aaron Sturgess to cross for a try in the 38th minute, giving Brothers a 28-4 lead going into the half.
Centrals bridged the gap to 20 points four minutes into the second, with winger Brad Coey-Bradden crossing for his second after good lead-up work from lock Quentin Kersh.
But that was to be the closest the Tigers would get, as Dowd and Stanley combined to charge down a Craig Waia clearing kick in the 50th minute, with Dowd winning the race to the ball and running away to score.
Centrals coach Grant Bell gave full credit to Brothers, and admitted he would have some tough selection decisions to make ahead of the Burdekin match.
"In all areas, they were very good and got the result they played for," he said.
"They started well and we continued to try and find the game, using plenty of petrol in the process."
Bell said several injured Tigers who didn't play yesterday would be assessed mid-week, while a number of positions were still up for grabs.
