DRAGONS UNDER 20'S DEFEAT TIGERS 26 - 18

The Dragons Toyota Cup side have defeated a willing Tigers outfit tonight at the Sydney Football Stadium 26 – 18.

It was a tough encounter for the Dragons coming off the bye and with the Tigers beating premiership leaders the Storm in Melbourne last week.

After an early armwrestle it was the Dragons that struck first with a barnstorming run from Dragons lock Ken Edwards. Edwards beat three defenders, before stepping the fullback easily and scoring besides the post. Beau Henry converted to make it 6-0.

Defense was key in the early stages of the game with both teams looking to assert their dominance.

After a failed grubber-kick in the 13th minute by Kyle Stanley, Tigers second-rower Jason Schirnack regathered the ball and looked as though he would race 80 meters to score before a valiant effort from Dragons front-rower Shannon Wakeman seen him chased down. The Tigers then spun the ball wide, but the final pass found the touchline.

In the 20th minute, after sustained pressure the Dragons line finally cracked, with Tigers half-back Darren Nicholls using some good footwork to pierce two defenders and score close to the posts. Tigers fullback Jake Mullaney was successful with his conversion, leveling the score at 6-6.

In the 25th minute a charge-down by Beau Henry gave the Dragons good field position, and they quickly produced points, with a slicing run by fullback Henry Raiwuli, who stepped back off his right 3 times, to score under the posts. The conversion was successful by Henry, taking the Dragons lead out to 6 points.

In the 32nd minute Tigers halfback Darren Nicholls ran to the defensive line and put a neat little chip-kick through, with Robert Lui flying high to take the kick and force the ball down making the score 12-10. Mullaney converted to make it 12-12.

With 30 seconds to go and the Tigers attacking the Dragons line, Henry Raiwuli showed beautiful hands to swoop on a grubber and ensure the scores remained level at half-time.

After an entertaining first half, both teams looked evenly matched.

The first 10 minutes of the half went back and forwards, with both sides consolidating their play.

The first crack came when Dragons half Beau Henry showed great sleigh of hands with a short ball to centre Kane Linnett, who only had to fall over the line to score. Henry missed the conversion. Score Dragons 16, Tigers 12.

Brad Hudson Dragons second-rower produced a beautiful offload in the 56th minute with Kane Linnett in support who showed great pace in running 40 metres to score under the post. Henry converted to make it 22-12.

In the 66th minute Beau Henry kicked a penalty goal, to take the Dragons lead out to 2 converted trys.

In the 70th minute the Tigers found some space down the right hand side of the field, with winger …… putting secnd rower Simon Dwyer away, who outpaced the Dragons cover defenders and scored to the right of the posts. Jake Mullaney converted to make it 24-18.

The Tigers began to stretch the Dragons tiring defense, with a number of opportunities for the Tigers attack.

In the 75th minute Tigers centre Jake Clarke was penalised for taking out Dragons half Beau Henry after the kick. The penalty kick conversion was taken from where the ball landed, and with Henry injured, Dragons winger Joe Vickery slotted the conversion, taking the Dragons lead out to 8.

This lead proved to be too much for the Tigers and the final score remained Dragons 26, Tigers 18.

Back to back wins, thank goodness.

How good was the brawl.. One of the Sharks front rowers through about 15 punches without connecting then Ryan Williamson went bang and dropped him on his backside.. Unfortunately the other front rower ran in and hit Williamsone from behind.. A complete dog act..

Young Broncos Produce Stunning Win

THE WOW Brisbane Broncos under-20s have overcome a horror start to beat the Parramatta Eels 30-28 in the National Youth Competition match at Parramatta Stadium today.

The young Broncos showed amazing mental toughness to win after a being down 18-0 after just 10 minutes, and then scoring two tries in the final seven minutes to sneak home.

Rhys Matsen was the hero, diving over to scorewith just four minutes left to get the Broncos home after they had trailed 28-22 in the 73rd minute.

Down 18-16 at the break, the Broncos got in front for the first time in the match when big prop Mitchell Dodds – in his first game back from a fractured cheekbone – went over.

Ben Hunt converted and it was 22-18.

But the Eels scored almost straight way through Domenic Nasso and it was 22-all.

Prop Mitchel Johnson bullocked his way over next to the posts in the 59th minute to give the Eels back the lead at 28-22.

The Broncos kept fighting, with Josh Williams making a long break and being ankle tapped a metre short of the line.

Jharal Yow Yeh scored from dummy half, but Hunt’s conversion unluckily hit the upright and was waved away, leaving the Broncos two points short with seven minutes left.

That opened the door for Matsen’s heroics and the Broncos held on for the final couple of minutes.

It didn’t look like the Broncos day when the Parramatta boys put on three tries in the first 10 minutes.

Taniela Lasalo, Rory Brien and Albert Kelly all crossed the line, with Nathan Gardner knocking over all three conversions for an early 18-0 lead.

However the young Broncos answered when Dane Gagai snuck down the left touchline to pinch a try, and then Todd Murphy backed up well to score in the 33rd minute.

Ben Hunt kicked the goal and the Broncos had got back to eight points behind.

The Broncos then produced a stunning try two minutes before the break to put themselves firmly back in the match.

Prop David Hala ran for the line but juggled the ball before off-loading to Tariq Sims, who found a half gap before flicking a ball out to unmarked second rower Kurtis Lingwoodock.

Hunt converted again and the Broncos were back at 18-16 down at halftime.

Finally! They manage to pull off a last minute win.

Would've been interesting is both teams were at full strength though.

Four charged by NRL over under-20s brawl

No charges were laid by the NRL match review committee following the weekend's games, but four players are facing lengthy bans for a vicious brawl in the Toyota Cup.

The Cronulla-Sydney Roosters under-20s clash erupted just after halftime with three players - gun Roosters centre Ryan Williamson and Sharks pair Ahmad Ellaz and John Viiga - sin-binned following a fight.

All three, along with Roosters hooker Sam Brunton, were on Monday charged over the incident - the foursome facing a total of 15 weeks on the sidelines.

Backrower Ellaz was the hardest hit after being slapped with a grade five contrary conduct charge - the 19-year-old facing a five-week ban or four matches with an early plea.

Viiga and Williamson were both charged with grade four offences which carry four-match bans, though both can cut that by one week with the early plea.

Brunton, who was sin-binned for a later incident, will miss two games with an early plea.
