Stirring Win For Young Broncos
Trad McLean
Bronco Media

Friday, July 24, 2009
THE WOW Brisbane Broncos under-20s have produced another stirring display to beat the Gold Coast Titans at Skilled Park tonight.
Down 16-10 at halftime, the young Broncos took over in the second stanza to record a strong 34-22 victory.
Behind by six points at the break, the Broncos tied it up when Dave Hala (pictured) went over and Corey Norman converted just after halftime.
They were ahead when Norman danced his way over and knocked over the conversion to make it 22-16.
But the Titans were not done for yet, halfback Cody Walker scoring his second try with 22 minutes remaining to make it 22-all.
Clever hooker Kurt Baptiste would tip his side in front again when he burrowed over from dummy half.
Norman converted again and the Broncos were on top, 28-22 with 14 minutes remaining.
Todd Murphy put the Broncos well within sight of victory when he kept his recent record of scoring every week alive with a four-pointer in the 71st minute.
Norman’s goal put the Broncos in front by 12 and out of trouble.
The Titans had the best of the first half, posting a 12-0 lead by the 28th minute.
Walker scored the first try, which was converted by Jordan Rankin, and then Lachlan Creighton went over out wide to make the advantage an even dozen.
But the Broncos halved the lead in the 32nd minute when Dane Gagai climbed high to take a bomb.
Norman converted and it was 12-6.
Just three minutes later, Jake Granville found some space and rounded the Titans fullback to score a good solo try.
Norman missed the goal and it was back to 12-10.
But the Broncos undid a bit of good work when they let Titans centre Guy Borgas find his way over the line just seconds before the break, leaving the score at 16-10 at halftime.
BRISBANE BRONCOS NYC 34 (D Gagai, J Granville, D Hala, C Norman, K Baptiste, T Murphy tries; C Norman 5 goals) GOLD COAST TITANS NYC 22 (C Walker 2, L Creighton, G Borgas tries; J Rankin 3 goals) at Skilled Park.

Bulldogs 39 – Eels 20 – Full Time in the Toyota Cup

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have been comprehensively outpointed in their Toyota Cup clash with the Bulldogs, losing 39-20 at ANZ Stadium.

The Eels never recovered from a slow start that saw them trail by 22 points inside half an hour, while two tries to open the second half ultimately secured the Bulldogs the win.

But despite scoring the final three tries of the match the Eels were never in the hunt, the Bulldogs scoring a vital win in the context of their season.

The match began badly and soon got much worse for the Eels, who conceded four tries to trail by 22-nil before they managed to claw their way onto the scoreboard.

The procession began in the eighth minute through a try to Chris Taripo, which was followed by converted four pointers to Martin Taupau (14th minute), Dane Finucane (22nd), and former Eel Lachlan Gowland (29th).

The Gowland try was converted from the sideline, with Taripo’s kick striking the upright and crossbar before going over.

Royce Hura ran onto an Albert Kelly short ball to get the Eels on the board after 34 minutes, the try going unconverted for a 22-4 scoreline.

However Taripo ensured the Bulldogs would head to the sheds in the ascendency, scoring his second try of the match in the 38th minute to make it 26-4 at half time.

The Eels started the second half needing to score first – however back to back four pointers from Shane Pumipi and Rhys Jack ensured the pain continued for the visitors, who by that point trailed 38-4.

The Eels then worked the left hand side and the tactic paid off, with Rory Brien scoring twice wide out in quick succession to get the visitors back into the match.

Albert Kelly converted both tries to give the Eels hope at 38-16.

A Nathan Gardner break gave the Eels a golden opportunity to go past 20 soon after the second Brien try, however Gardner’s last pass was in front of Ryan Morgan who spilt a tough chance with the line wide open.

But just a minute later Domenic Nasso made up for the missed opportunity, showing great strength to cross wide out for his side’s fourth try and a 38-20 score line.

The Bulldogs managed to stem the flow, thanks in no small part to a defensive effort that saw them at one point withstand 22 straight tackles on their own line, and then had the final say with Jack nailing a field goal with five minutes left to play to make it 39-20.

WESTS TIGERS BEAT CANBERRA 21-18 IN TOYOTA CUP

A superb second half performance saw the Wests Tigers record a hard fought 21-18 victory over Canberra Raiders at Canberra Stadium today in round 20 of the Toyota Cup competition.

The win sees Wests Tigers move to 27 points and into fifth place and one point ahead of Canberra.

The last time the two teams met in round one Canberra rcorded a resounding 50-10 win.

The opening five minutes was a good settling in period for both teams in a match being played in very chilly conditions. Both teams were on song early with their kicking games.

The Raiders had the first real attacking opportunity in the eighth minute but a hard cut out pass five metres out went forward and into the arms of a Wests Tigers player. It came on the back of the referee pulling up a forward pass from dummy half by hooker Jay Florimo to lock Matt Hyland.

A flat pass 10 metres out from the Wests Tigers tryline saw Canberra knock the ball on in the 10th minute.

A grubber kick 15 metres out by Canberra saw second-rower Rhys Curran swoop it up. The ball was quickly spread left for winger Junior Roqica to charge down the right wing before offloading a pass inside for the referee to rule it forward.

The Raiders opened the scoring in the 16th minute when, on the last tackle, the ball was spread right for lock Mitchell Kennedy to step inside past five-eighth Robert Lui to score.

Half-back Sam Williams failed to convert the try for a 4-0 lead after 17 minutes.

Wests Tigers should have drawn level in the 22nd minute but Chris Corby dropped the ball in trying to plant it down from dummy half.

Canberra took full advantage two minutes later when second-rower Jarrad Kennedy stepped and beat three defenders in a 20 metre run to score next to the posts.

Williams converted the try for a 10-0 lead after 25 minutes.

Two consecutive penalties to Wests Tigers in the 33rd and 34th minutes saw the visitors in the Canberra 10 metre zone. The Raiders' defence dug deep to hold off Wests Tigers with second-rowers Jason Schirnack and Rhys Curran going within a centimetre of scoring.

The referee again called a forward pass from Corby despite replays showing a flat pass from dummy half in the 37th minute to give Canberra a scrum feed 25 metres out. The referee then ruled another tough call on Wests Tigers for a strip on Josh Kennedy.

A quick tap saw Canberra score in the corner two plays later when the ball was spread right for centre Drury Low to cross.

Williams missed the conversion attempt from the sideline for a 14-0 lead to Canberra at half-time.

2nd Half
Wests Tigers started the second half strongly when a great break by Lui saw him race downfield to offload a pass within 10 metres of the Canberra line. Wests Tigers maintained the pressure but a kick on the last tackle went over the sideline in-goal.

Wests Tigers almost scored from a grubber kick but Canberra grounded the ball through Low in the 45th minute.

Corby finally opened the Wests Tigers account on the back of a repeat set. The try came after Lui offloaded in a two man tackle for Corby to score his first try of the season to leave Wests Tigers trailing 14-4.

Full-back Jake Mullaney's conversion attempt hit the upright.

Corby bravely battled on after suffering a right shoulder injury in the 53rd minute.

Lady luck came Wests Tigers way when a place kick by Lui to the winger saw the ball bounce back into the arms for winger Sama Sauvao to catch and offload to Schirnack to score.

Mullaney failed to convert the try for a 14-8 scoreline.

A great offload in a two man tackle by lock Matt Hylandsaw some fine support play that led to Mullaney racing away to score under the posts. Mullaney converted his own try for a 14-14 scoreline after 64 minutes after Wests Tigers trailed 14-0 at half-time.

A great run by Andrew Fifita saw play go down inside Canberra's quarter. A quick play the ball saw Lui turn the ball back inside for Mullaney to grab his second try within minutes.

Mullaney converted his own try to give Wests Tigers a 20-14 lead with 11 minutes remaining.

Wests Tigers withstood some pressure in the 74th minute after the referee ruled Roqica had lost the ball in a play the ball despite a Canberra player holding his leg. Corby then pulled off a trysaving tackle in the next set of six to keep the home side out.

The Raiders then knocked the ball on in the 77th minute after spreading it left to give Wests Tigers possession 45 metres out from the Canberra tryline.

Nicholls then all but secured the match for the Wests Tigers with a calm and cool field goal from 35 metres out to give Wests Tigers a 21-14 lead with two minutes remaining.

Canberra regained the ball from the kick-off after a spectacular aeriel take by Matt Ward from the re-start. Low then crossed over in the corner for a 21-18 scoreline with just one minute remaining.

The Raiders elected not to take the conversion attempt to give them more time with the ball.

Canberra gotr a penalty five seconds from full-time but a poor grubber kick saw the ball go into the arms of Hyland to secure victory for Wests Tigers.

It was a superb second half comeback by Wests Tigers in one of their most gutsiest wins of the seasons. Wests Tigers have now made it six wins from their past seven games.

Season's best - Vodafone Junior Warriors 26, St George Illawarra 6

The Vodafone Junior Warriors boosted their finals hopes with an outstanding 20-point win over second-placed St George Illawarra in today’s 20th-round NYC match at Mount Smart Stadium.

Backing up after a disappointing 28-30 loss to the lowly-ranked Sydney Roosters, the home side produced its best all-round display of the season in scoring five tries to one.

One of the competition’s hottest attacking teams, St George Illawarra caused concern when they crossed in just the third minute of the match to lead 6-0.

But they never scored again, the Vodafone Junior Warriors grabbing three tries to lead 14-6 at halftime and then scoring two more to stretch to 26-6 with more than 20 minutes still to play.

While they couldn’t build on that advantage, they defended superbly to keep the Dragons out.

Excelling once again was halfback Shaun Johnson while hooker Alehana Mara also had an exceptional match.

Johnson scored the Vodafone Junior Warriors’ first try – his 11th in 18 matches this season – and was typically influential throughout.

Exciting second rower Ben Henry underlined his promise yet again, scoring his seventh try of the season, while prolific winger Bill Tupou, back from injury, snared his 11th try in 14 appearances this year.
