High scoring triumph for NYC Cowboys

Scoring seven tries to five, the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys overcame the Bulldogs in a high scoring Toyota Cup match 40-26 at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

Racing away to a commanding 22-4 lead in the first 30 minutes, the Cowboys were totally dominant before a late first half Bulldogs revival closed the gap to 22-14 by half time.

Some anxious moments followed for the home team as the Bulldogs scored again just after half time.

Then Wayne Ulugia came off the bench and scored a critical try in the 60th minute, opening the gap between the teams, and the Cowboys were able to put the game beyond doubt with two more tries.

Toyota Cup outdone by Eagles

The Sydney Roosters Toyota Cup side have suffered a similar fate second time around to the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles after they suffered a 56-10 defeat at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The high flying Eagles travelled to the East having only lost three games all season leaving them at the top of the table while the Roosters were sitting one from the bottom.

The Roosters would have had vivid memories of the 42-nil score line that resulted in the last meeting between the teams met after the first bye but their intensity in the first 20 did little to show it.

A physical opening to the match was illustrated when Ryan Williamson was put on report in the 10th minute for a dangerous tackle and the visitors reacted strongly forcing referee Luke Phillips, who played for both clubs, to issue an early warning.

The penalty piggybacked the competition leaders into Roosters territory and off the back of the attacking position they allowing them to open the scoring through captain Jamie Buhrer in the 11th minute. The Eagles lock chased a grubber in-goal and beat a lazy defender who failed to knock the ball dead before grounding. Mitchell Porter kick front right in front added the extras for a 6-nil lead.

The home side had numerous chances inside the opposition 20 metre zone but with every venture close to the line came a new mistake.

The Eagles soon showed why they were on top of the ladder scoring four tries in a dominant 13 minute spell.

Halfback Daly Cherry-Evans crossed first after bouncing off Dane Cordner on his way to the line then their centre Matt Grieve finished off a long break after evading wayward defenders.

John Grey and Liam Higgins added extra frustration to the Roosters camp when they both crossed off back-to-back sets and with Mitchell Porters boot off target just once the visitors took a comfortable 28-nil lead to the break.

The Roosters came out from the halftime after getting a rocket up them by their coach Scott Murray and forced the Eagles into an early error.

The Tricolours capitalised on the loose ball and scored a couple of rucks later when Tufuga Sa scooted down the left side to cross untouched. The Roosters spread the ball wide after a neat run around play before the winger went in. Luke Towers conversion attempt from the sideline was unsuccessful.

The Roosters good start failed to worry the visitors as they crossed 10 minutes later through Lama Tasi. The Eagles prop set up on the blindside and streaked away to dive over the line to put the result beyond doubt.

Credit to the home side who never gave in and showed that when Martin Kennedy crashed over. The prop playing in the backrow ran a good line to stretch out for the Roosters second four pointer. Towers this time added the extras putting his team into double figures.

That was as close as the home side got with the visitors running away with the game in the last 20 minutes to post four unanswered tries to finish off the match.

Dragons NYC Storm Home to Defeat Raiders

A dominant second half display from the St George Illawarra Toyota Cup team has resulted in a confidence building 38-24 victory for the Dragons over the 2008 NYC Grand Finalists Canberra Raiders at Canberra Stadium this afternoon.

The Dragons scored five unanswered second half tries and overcame a 24-6 deficit to storm home and maintain second place in the 2009 Toyota Cup competition.

Defence was lacking in the opening exchanges of the match with a try being scored every set for the opening five sets of the game.

It was a disappointing start for St George Illawarra with the Raiders scoring in just the second minute of the game.

The Dragons were seemingly not quite ready to play from the opening whistle when they allowed the Raiders kick-off to bounce over the sideline. From the ensuring set, an urgent Raiders winger Matt Ward was quickest to the ball that was kicked in-goal. Five-eight and Captain Mick Picker successfully converted to take the early 6-0 lead.

The Dragons hit-back five minutes later in their first attacking opportunity of the game on the back of a strong run from prop Trent Merrin. Halfback Beau Henry drifted right and managed to slide through the Raiders defence and score 10m in from the left hand sideline. Henry successfully converted his own try to bring the scores level at 6-6.

Raiders winger Ward made it back-to-back tries in the 10th minute on the back of a Dragons penalty. Dragons hooker Mitchell Rein was penalised on half-way for holding down the player after completing the tackle. The Raiders began their attack just 20m out from their attacking try-line and swift ball movement across the field caught the Dragons short on their right-hand edge enabling Ward to cross in the corner. Picker was again successful with the sideline conversion, the Raiders regaining the lead 12-6.

Three minutes later the home team scored again when halfback Sam Williams weaved his way through the Dragons defence to score 10m to the left of the uprights. Picker made it three from three and the home team skipped out to an early 12 point lead, 18-6.

The Raiders again capitalised on a Dragons error, this time it was from Dragons fullback Chris Astill who knocked the ball on from a down-field kick, gifting the home-team possession just 10m out. Three plays later, Raider hooker Nathan Mossman barged over adjacent to the right hand upright and Picker converted to extend the lead to 24-6.

The Dragons second try didn’t come until the 34th minute when hooker Rein showed great strength and determination to barge over with three defenders to score next to the left hand upright. Henry successfully converted to bring the Dragons back to within two converted tries 24-12 which is how the scores stayed for the remainder of the first half.

The Dragons came out firing in the second half with centre Kane Linnett scoring just three minutes after the re-start. Linnett made a break down the left hand side and was eventually caught 10m out. The Dragons then shifted the ball firstly to the right and then back to Linnett on the left who crossed on the corner. Henry was unsuccessful with the conversion, the Raiders maintaining the lead 24-16.

The Dragons made it back-to-back tries five minutes later when Merrin crashed over from 10m out off the back of a Henry 40-20 kick to give the Dragons

The home team surrended the lead in the 62nd minute after a great team effort saw fullback Astill cross in the right-hand corner. Five-eight Kyle Stanley made the initial break and then great back-up play by Henry and Clifford Morris eventually saw the ball reach Astill who dived across to put the Dragons in front for the first time in the match 26-24. Henry was unsuccessful with the conversion.

Hard working prop Merrin made another break eight minutes later, Henry again back-up and almost scored himself before passing inside to Linnett who scored his second try of the match. Henry successfully converted to extend the Dragons lead to 32-24.

Three minutes before full-time Henry was again involved, scoring his second try of the match and successfully converted; a just reward for his back-up play, this time on the outside of second rower Jarrod Thompson who broke through Raiders defence. The Dragons keeping the Raiders scoreless in the second half to complete the 14 point come from behind victory, 38-24.

Of concern for the Dragons out of the victory was the placement of lock Ken Edwards on report in the 30th minute for a high tackle.

Warriors 42 – Eels 22 – Full Time in the Toyota Cup

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have lost to the New Zealand Warriors in the Toyota Cup, blowing an early lead on the way to an eventual 42-22 defeat.

The Eels were boosted by the return from suspension of Taniela Lasalo and Mitchell Allgood, along with Anthony Mitchell’s comeback after two weeks in the NSW Cup, however the influx was countered by the late withdrawal of Albert Kelly and Brad Graham through injury.

Nonetheless, the Eels started strongly to lead by 12 points midway through the first half, only to concede six straight tries to trail by 24 by the time the second was half way gone.

Lasalo’s return gave the Eels an extra option in attack and they used it to great advantage early, a break down the left hand side from the second rower turning into points two passes later when Ryan Morgan touched down in the corner.

Debutant Jaydin Tavita converted from the sideline to put the Eels out to a 6-nil lead.

Despite making two tackles to the Warriors one in the opening 20 minutes of play, spending the majority of their time in their own 20 metre zone, the Eels managed to extend their lead when a TK Amosa bomb fell favourably for Dan Cross who scored under the posts.

Tavita added the extras to see the Eels move 12 points ahead.

Things then fell in a hole for the home side, with winger Bill Tupou scoring a 95 metre intercept try before Michael Afioga crossed wide out.

Halfback Shaun Johnson converted both tries to level things at 12-all.

Five eighth Kurt Kara then crossed to put the men from across the Tasman into the lead, with Johnson’s conversion making it 18-12 after 35 minutes.

Tries early after the resumption to Rusty Bristow, Nafe Seluini and John Palavi handed the Warriors a formidable 36-12 lead, the early starch well and truly fading from the Eels defence.

Such were the Eels fortunes they were unable to convert the few opportunities they had, at one point knocking the ball on in the in goal despite being first and second to a well weighted Amosa grubber.

They eventually stemmed the flow through a try to Ken Sio, which was followed two minutes later by one to Rory Brien, with Tavita converting the Sio try to edged the Eels closer at 36-22.

It was to be as close as the Eels got, with Johnson scoring and converting in the final minute to take his match day tally to 18 points.

Good on the young Warriors.
Let's hope the First Grade powers that be don't decide to pinch more of the Juniors to prop up a disappointing side.
The U20's have a good shot at the semis, with 3 tough games left and don't need any more players snatched away.

WESTS TIGERS BEAT SHARKS 44-6 IN TOYOTA CUP

Wests Tigers overcame a slow start to record a thumping 42-6 victory over Cronulla Sharks at Toyota Park in round 23 of the Toyota Cup competition on Sunday, August 16.

The victory lifted Wests Tigers into fourth place depending on the outcome of Brisbane-Penrith match.

The opening 10 minutes saw both sides match each other early with no real opportunities. Wests Tigers opened the scoring in the 11th minute when half-back and captain Darren Nicholls fired a sharp pass to the right for full-back Jake Mullaney to step and beat three defenders to score out wide.

Mullaney failed to convert the try for a 4-0 lead.

The Sharks hit back in the 17th minute when they kept the ball alive out wide for Jason Buyuka to score for a 4-4 scoreline. Half-back Chad Townsend converted the try for a 6-4 lead.

Wests Tigers bounced back in the 22nd minute when second-rower Simon Dwyer crossed out wide after the team got six more tackles from a crossfield kick. Mullaney converted the try for a 10-6 lead.

Wests Tigers centre Joel Wisbey was then held up over the line before Mullaney was denied a try in chasing through a grubber kick after the referee ruled the ball had went dead.

Mullaney kicked a penalty goal right on half-time from 25 metres out to give Wests Tigers a 12-6 lead at the break.

2nd Half
Wests Tigers has plenty of chances in the Shharks quarter in the opening five minutes of the second half but could capitalise.

Things did change though when a grubber kick by Nicholls saw Mullaney again on the spot to score near the posts. Mullaney converted his own try for an 18-6 lead after 50 minutes.

Four minutes later, the Nicholls-Mullaney show was at it again when a grubber kick by the half-back saw the full-back grab the ball one handed before planting it down to score in the same spot.
Mullaney converted the try for a 24-6 lead.

It became 28-6 when forward Leivaha Pulu crossed out wide. Mulalney converted the try for a 30-6 lead.

Wests Tigers stepped it up again when Mullaney scored out wide for his fourth try for a 34-6 lead.

Hooker Chris Corby then got on the tryscoring act to stretch the lead to 38-6 before winger Sama Sauvao scored for a 42-6 lead. Mullaney converted the try for a 44-6 victory.

It was a big day out for Mullaney, scoring four tries and kicking six goals for a personal tally of 28 points. He now sits on top of the pointscoring ladder in the Toyota Cup with 218 points.

Young Broncos Steam Home

The WOW Brisbane Broncos under-20s have pulled off a remarkable comeback victory, scoring seven tries in 20 minutes to defeat the Penrith Panthers 48-24 at Suncorp stadium this afternoon.

The second half began with a dynamic bust by interchange player David Hala (pictured) racing away 30 plus metres up field.

The panthers countered as a desperate Todd Murphy made an outstanding one on one try saving tackle, but the Broncos defence was unable to scramble quick enough as Panthers second rower Daniel Panese scored out wide.

Five-eighth Stirling Siejka converted giving his side a healthy 16-6 lead in the 44th minute.

The Broncos were under all sorts of pressure as the Panthers back line clicked into gear with centre Jeff Ryan scoring his second of the day out wide.

Stirling Siejka narrowly missed the conversion as the Panthers extended their lead to 20-6, with 49 minutes of play gone.

The Broncos dug their heels in capitalising off a penalty five metres out with a charging Hala too much for the defence to stop that close to the line.

Five-eighth Corey Norman converted bringing the Broncos back into the match at 20-12, with 25 minutes remaining.

The Broncos looked like scoring again until a mistimed kick ended up in the hands of a flying Stirling Siejka who ran 80 metres to score in the corner.

He failed to convert his own try as the Panthers edged away to 24-12, in the 60th minute.

The Broncos dug deep again as centre Brent Williams offloaded for winger Josh Williams to score in the corner.

Norman failed to convert as the Broncos trailed 24-16, with 17 minutes of play remaining.

The Broncos muscled up again as winger Jesse Mogg barged his way over leaving the Panthers fullback Zoram Watene groggy on the try line.

Norman converted setting up a grand stand finish as the Broncos trailed 24-22, in the 66th minute.

The amazing comeback was complete as a clever kick from Hunt saw no fullback at home and Josh Williams touching down for his second of the day.

Norman failed to convert as the Broncos took a narrow 26-24 lead, with 12 minutes of play remaining.

The Broncos roll on continued as Hunt handed off for Norman who stepped and weaved his way over the try line.

He converted his own try extending the Broncos lead to 32-24, in the 72nd minute.

The Broncos were tearing the Panthers apart making easy metres up the middle with Hala going in again running hard out wide.

Norman converted blowing the score out to 38-24, with five minutes of play remaining.

The Broncos dominance continued as second rower Kurtis Lingwoodock took a brilliant intercept allowing for Josh Williams to score a hat trick of tries.

Norman failed to add the extras as the score remained 42-24, with five to go.

Lingwoodock was damaging again racing away then linking up with a flying Murphy who went in under the posts.

Norman converted as the score reached an embarrassing 48-24, in the 79th minute.

Earlier it was the Panthers who capitalised off a Broncos mistake with Ryan scoring out wide.

Stirling Siejka failed to convert making it 4-0, in the eighth minute.

The Broncos responded with some quick passing by hooker Kurt Baptiste leading to Norman scoring near the posts.

He converted his own try putting the Broncos in front 6-4, with 17 minutes of play gone.

There was plenty of feeling in the contest with prop Mitchell Dodds being placed on report in the 19th minute for lifting beyond the horizontal.

The Panthers were able to sustain enough pressure for halfback Harry Siejka to score from dummy half.

Stirling Siejka converted putting the Panthers back in front 10-6 right on the stroke of half-time.
