DRAGONS NYC DEFEAT BRONCOS 26-0

The Dragons Toyota Cup side have tonight defeated the Broncos 26 – 0 in what was a superb defensive effort by the Dragons against the fourth placed Broncos.

Early in the match the Dragons had all the possession which resulted in points after only eight minutes, when a Beau Henry chip-kick was knocked down and from the very next play Dragons front-rower Trent Merrin crashed over close to the line. Beau Henry converted and the score was 6-0.

After sustained pressure from the Dragons and some enterprising play, Dragons centre Kane Linnett showed some good footwork and outpaced the Broncos cover defense to score in the north-eastern corner. The conversion was successful from Henry and taking the score to 12-0.

The Broncos began to work their way back into the match, looking like scoring on numerous occasions, except for some last-ditch Dragons defense on their line.

The opening ten minutes of the second-half was a real arm-wrestle as both teams completed their sets, getting good kicks away and defending strongly.

The 59th minute and Beau Henry kicked a penalty conversion for an infringement in the ruck taking the score out to 14-0.

Two minutes later and Beau Henry was involved again, this time scoring a beautiful solo try. Henry converted his own try and the Dragons stretched their lead to 20-0.

In the 74th minute it was Dragons front-rower Trent Merrin that made a huge bust up the middle of the ruck, running 60 metres, before positioning Warwick Carter back on his inside who showed great hands to score under the posts. Henry converted the try and the Dragons took a 26-0 lead.

The Dragons put the final touches on a wonderful defensive effort by holding out the Broncos in the final minutes and keeping them scoreless.

EELS BEAT WESTS TIGERS 28-26 IN TOYOTA CUP

Wests Tigers suffered a 28-26 loss to Parramatta Eels in the Toyota Cup competition tonight at the Sydney Football Stadium.

A poor first half by the Wests Tigers, combined with some Eels magic, saw Wests Tigers down 28-4 at half-time before a great second half comeback fell short at the last hurdle.

Wests Tigers opened the scoring in the 11th minute when exciting full-back Jake Mullaney fielded a kick and raced 82 metres to outsprint several defenders to score in the corner. It was Mullaney's fifth try in two games after scoring four in the win over the Sharks last week.

Mullaney failed to convert the try for a 4-0 lead.

Parramatta hit back when winger Ryan Morgan defused a bomb from half-back Tk Amosa to score in the corner. Amosa failed to convert the try for a 4-4 scoreline.

Wests Tigers had a try from a grubber kick by five-eighth Jay Florimo disallowed after the referee ruled a Parramatta defender had grounded the ball in-goal.

Two minutes later, a good short ball by lock Jason Baitieri saw him put centre Rory Brien through a gap past opposite centre Jake Clarke to score out wide for an 8-4 lead.

Amosa converted the try for a 10-4 lead to Parramatta after 31 minutes.

The Eels then scored one of the flukiest tries of the year when Amosa picked up a low pass near his ankle and kicked the ball infield. The ball hit the goal-pads on the full and bounced into the arms of Tim Crellin to score under the posts. Amosa converted the try for a 16-4 lead after 33 minutes.

Amosa then extended his team's lead to 20-4 when he showed the ball, held it up, and then stepped back inside prop David Fifita to score next to the posts. Five-eighth Jaydin Tavita converted the try for a 22-4 lead with under three minutes remaining.

Quick hands by the Eels saw Crellin score his second try under the posts. Tavita converted from in front to give Parramatta a 28-4 lead at half-time.

2nd Half
Wests Tigers started the second half well when the halves combined to send second-rower Simon Dwyer over. Mullaney converted the try for a 28-10 scoreline.

A short run and step by captain and half-back Darren Nicholls saw him carry over two defenders to score next to the posts. Mullaney failed to convert the try for a 28-14 scoreline after 50 minutes.

Some fine play down the left flank by Nicholls and Florimo saw the ball find centre Joel Jackson who turned the ball to winger Sama Sauvao who sent the pass back outside for Jackson to score behind the posts. Mullaney converted the try for a 28-20 scoreline.

Mullaney scored his second try when the ball was spread right for Dwyer to offload to centre Jake Clarke who found Mullaney in support to score out wide for a 28-24 scoreline.

Mullaney converted the try for a 28-26 scoreline with 17 minutes remaining.

Nicholls then put Dwyer over two minutes later but the pass was ruled forward.

Wests Tigers had a chance to level the game 30 seconds before full-time after a Parramatta player was sent to the sin-bin.

Instead of taking the shot at goal from 15 metres out and near the posts, Wests Tigers elected to run the ball but a grubber kick by Nicholls saw the Eels regain the ball. The referee then ruled the Eels player had the ball stripped in the tackle and awarded a penalty. The Eels held on to win the game.

The loss leaves Wests Tigers in fifth place after fourth placed Brisbane lost to St George-Illawarra.

Finals-bound - Vodafone Junior Warriors 28, Canberra 24

The Vodafone Junior Warriors confirmed their place in the finals for the second year running after beating last year’s champions the Canberra Raiders 28-24 in today’s 24th-round NYC encounter at Mount Smart Stadium.

With two rounds still to play in the regular season, the Vodafone Warriors have climbed to 29 points with their 12th win of the season and their third on end after victories over Gold Coast and Parramatta in the previous two rounds.

They remain in seventh spot but are three clear of eighth-placed Canberra while ninth-placed North Queensland is now five points behind on 24 after its loss to Newcastle last night and can’t catch the Auckland side.

In their last two games before the finals, the Vodafone Warriors face the Bulldogs (11th) and top three side Melbourne.

After scoring first today through winger Thomas Ah Van – back after an injury lay-off – the home side fell behind 4-6 and didn’t regain the lead until the 32nd minute when hard-working standoff Kurt Kara ran onto a cleverly-judged Shaun Johnson chip kick to score near the posts.

With Johnson converting the Vodafone Junior Warriors led 10-6 and extended to 16-6 at halftime when hooker Nafe Seluini sneaked over from dummy half.

They stayed in front for the rest of the match, going out to a seemingly commanding 22-6 advantage after Johnson surged onto a sweet Russell Packer pass.

But just when they looked to be in control, the Vodafone Junior Warriors conceded ground as Canberra struck twice in five minutes to trail just 18-22 with 13 minutes to play.

Fortunately the locals regrouped with winger George Vuna given a clear run to the line after Johnson’s weaving run and long cut-out pass, Johnson’s conversion giving his side what proved to be a match-winning lead.

Canberra scored late to cut the lead to 24-28 but there wasn’t enough time to fashion another try.
With his 12 points today, Johnson lifted his season’s tally to 195 points.

NYC Titans return to winner's circle

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans’ NYC side has returned to the winner’s circle with a much-needed 18-10 win over Cronulla at Skilled Park today.

The Titans looked to be staring down the barrel of another defeat when trailing 10-nil midway through the second half but three consecutive tries over the final 20 minutes gave the home side their eighth win of the season.

The win moves the Titans up from 14th to 12th place on the NYC ladder heading into the final two rounds of the regular season.

Toyota Cup Bulldogs defeat Roosters 42-12

The Toyota Cup Bulldogs have posted another dominant second-half performance to overcome the Roosters 42-12 at ANZ Stadium on Monday.

The Bulldogs enjoyed a 12-point halftime lead after a competitive first half but ran away with the match in the second forty, with wing Chris Taripo kicking seven goals from seven attempts.

The Roosters opened up an early lead after a bomb from Tim Condon was plucked out of the air by Sandor Earl despite the attention of two Bulldogs defenders.

However the Bulldogs soon took control of the match on the back of some hard-nosed defence which frustrated a number of promising attacks from the Roosters.

At the other end of the field, Taripo crossed from close-range, Matt Minto scored from a perfectly-weighted grubber while Dale Finucane touched down after receiving a skilful short ball from hooker Jamie Graham.

However the blue-and-whites’ best try came in the 35th minute when Minto dummied his way through the line before sprinting 50 metres downfield and out of the desperate clutches of opposing fullback Luke Towers.

The Roosters hit back in the shadows of halftime after lock Ethan Lowe snuck through on the back of a quick play-the-ball, making the halftime score 24-12.

The visitors enjoyed a wealth of possession and field position early in the second half but succumbed to basic handling errors at key moments.

The Bulldogs, on the other hand, made the most of limited time in opposition territory.

Lock forward Finucane continued to hit the ball at pace and got more rewards with a bustling linebreak before finding wing Peter Tuiafiso on his outside for the try.

Centre Nehe Millner-Skudder was next to score after holding would-be tackler Towers literally at arm’s length on a 15-metre charge to the line, making the score 36-12.

With the Roosters’ defence tiring in the closing minutes, halfback Rhys Jack strolled through to wrap up proceedings with a 74th minute try.

The win leaves the Toyota Cup Bulldogs in tenth position on the competition table, three points shy of the eight-placed Raiders, with two rounds left to play.
