Young Broncos Fall Short

THE WOW Brisbane Broncos under-20s have left their run too late in a 27-24 defeat at the hands of North Queensland tonight.

A poor first half left the Broncos down 20-6 at halftime and although they piled on three late tries, the task was too much.

The Broncos had a couple of golden opportunities to put themselves back in the match early in the second half, but couldn’t provide the polish.

First captain Guy Ford spilled the ball with a try in the offing, and then Jacob Samoa dropped an easy one with the line beckoning.

Those mistakes were compounded when the Cowboys made a break and Ben Cronin went over untouched to make it 26-6.

Dunamis Lui (pictured) went over for his second try with 13 minutes left and then James Ackerman touched down straight after to make a match of it.

Big prop Dave Hala then crashed over on a wedge move and the Broncos had three minutes to snatch an unlikely victory.

It was just that with Cowboys halfback Ray Thompson using a field goal to run the clock down and confirm a three-point win.

Earlier, Cowboy Obie Geia was having a career night early, posting three tries in the first 23 minutes.

The Broncos opened the scoring through Lui, but then Geia went on his scoring rampage.

When Wayne Ulugia chipped and chased to score his own in the 30th minute, the Cowboys had forged a strong 20-6 lead, one they held until halftime.

Eels 24 – Panthers 18 – Full Time in Toyota Cup

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have survived a scare to claim back to back wins in the Toyota Cup, defeating the Penrith Panthers 24-18 at Parramatta Stadium.

The Eels led 16-nil early only to let the Panthers back in it, the score 20-18 as the full time siren sounded.

A try after the bell to TK Amosa secured the win, the Eels scoring five tries to three on their way to a six point victory.

Repeat sets on the Panthers line earned the Eels first points, Joel Latham offloading for Rory Brien to score wide out on the left for a four-nil lead after eight minutes.

Converted tries in quick succession to Jason Baitieri and Brien saw the Eels take a commanding 16-nil lead, before Stirling Siejka narrowed the gap to 10 with a converted try of his own five minutes out from the break.

The second half was just two minutes old when the Panthers struck again, Andrew Pongi diving over from dummy half for Siejka to convert, the visitors scrambling their way back into the contest at 16-12.

The Eels went 100 metres in a set to strengthen their lead soon after, the passage starting with a penalty for a Jesse Sene-Lefao high shot on Dan Cross in the in goal and finishing with a Domenic Nasso in and away try.

Jaydin Tavita’s kick went wide however the Eels lead was back out past a converted try at 20-12.

Both sides lost players to the sin bin after tensions boiled over midway through the half, the Eels forced to do without half TK Amosa while the Panthers lost lock Blake Austin.

The Panthers made the most of the situation with pro Sam McKendry forcing his way over to narrow the gap to two points at 20-18.

The knockout blow went the way of the Eels after full time, Amosa making up for his sin binning by scoring an intercept try to make the final score 24-18.

WESTS TIGERS BEAT TITANS 48-8 IN TOYOTA CUP

Wests Tigers moved into fourth place on the Toyota Cup ladder with a convincing 48-8 victory over the Gold Coast Titans at Skilled Stadium today.

The win takes Wests Tigers to 33 points with one round remaining before the finals. Brisbane slipped from fourth to fifth after losing to North Queensland last night.

Wests Tigers pushed aside their normal slow start to open the scoring in the fifth minute through hooker Chris Corby. Full-back Jake Mullaney converted for a 6-0 lead.

Six minutes later, prop Andrew Fifita added to his tryscoring tally with a try. Mullaney converted for a 12-0 lead.

Wests Tigers got their third try in the 18th minute when a crossfield kick by half-back and captain Darren Nicholls was spilt in-goal by a Gold Goast player for lock Matt Hyland to score.

Mullaney converted the try for an 18-0 lead.

The Titans opened their account when a grubber kick five metres before the line was dived upon by lock Scott McLennan.

Half-back Jordan Rankin failed to convert to leave the Titans trailing 18-4.

Second-rower Jason Schirnack then got in on the tryscoring action when he caught a crossfield bomb by Nicholls to score next to the posts.Mullaney converted for a 24-4 lead.

A crossfield kick into the sun made it hard for winger Joel Jackson to see the ball. Fortunately for the Titans, the ball bounced their way for winger Guy Borgas to score in the corner. The try was not converted for a 24-8 scoreline after 35 minutes.

A smart little grubber kick by Nicholls saw Mullaney chase the ball through to dive on it to score just before the dead ball line. Mullaney failed to convert for a 28-8 scoreline at half-time.

2nd Half
Mullaney was again in the thick of the action when he scored his second try off a kick for a 32-8 lead.

Andrew Fifita scored his second try when he finished off a break by Patrick Politoni to cross under the posts. Mullaney converted the try for a 38-8 lead.

Mullaney then grabbed his hat-trick when he made a break and raced away to score out wide for a 42-8 lead.

A grubber kick by Mullaney five minutes before full-time saw centre Joel Wisbey chase it through to score in the corner for a 46-8 lead.

Mullaney converted the try from the sideline for a 48-8 lead with three minutes remaining.

The Titans were left a man short in the 78th minute when Ryan James was sent to the sin bin for not allowing Schirnack to play the ball 10 metres out from the Gold Coast line.

From the penalty, prop Aaron Woods almost scored near the posts but was pulled down a metre short. It would have been Woods' first try of the season but the much talked about beard was shaved off during the week as the talented prop focuses now on the finals.

Roosters push Storm all the way

The Sydney Roosters Toyota Cup side have been edged out 16-14 by the Melbourne Storm at Olympic Park on Saturday afternoon.

It was three tries a piece with goal kick ultimately making the difference with the Storm converting 2 from three to the Roosters one from the same amount of attempts.

The Tricolours were down by six points at the break before outscoring their now second placed opponents in blustery and greasy conditions.

The Roosters NYC side look safe from the wooden spoon and will avoid it narrowly for a second year running if the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles beat last placed Cronulla Sharks lose at Brookvale Oval tomorrow.

DRAGONS NYC DEFEAT RABBITOHS 32 - 26

The Dragons Toyota Cup side has tonight defeated the Rabbitohs 32-26 in an entertaining match at ANZ Stadium.

The Dragons started the game in explosive fashion, when Beau Henry threw a two man cut-out pass to find Kane Linnett on the touchline, Linnett then ran 60 meters, before bumping off the fullback when it looked as though he would be tackled over the sideline and scored in the corner. Beau Henry missed the conversion and the Dragons took an early 4-0 lead.

In the 8th minute Dragons five-eight Kyle Stanley made a good line-break, and was pulled up just short of the line. In the very next play second-rower Clifford Morris ran into a huge gap and scored under the posts. Beau Henry converted and the Dragons raced to a 10-0 lead.

The Rabbitohs bounced back in the 13th minute, when a grubber kick bounced back off the posts with five-eight Matt Mundine pouncing on the loose ball to score beside the posts. The conversion was successful by Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynolds and the score was Dragons 10, Rabbitohs 6.

The Rabbitohs scored again seven minutes later, after some enterprising play seen them go the length of the field before being pulled up just short of the line, with fullback Luke Capewell diving over from dummy-half the very next play. The conversion was successful by Reynolds and the Rabbitohs took a 12-10 lead.

In the 25th minute the Dragons produced a well-timed attacking raid, which seen the ball travel through several sets of hands, with Beau Henry delivering the final pass to a flying Kane Linnett, who scored his second try of the match. Beau Henry missed the conversion from wide out and the Dragons took a 14-12 lead.

Yet the Rabbitohs were quick to bounce back, when some good hands out wide seen centre Dylan Farrell carry three defenders over the line to score out wide. The conversion was unsuccessful and the Rabbitohs took the lead back 16-14.

With only seconds remaining in the first half the Rabbitohs attempted to spread the ball wide, yet a dropped ball fell perfectly for centre Kane Linnett who raced 40 meters untouched to score his third try for the match directly under the posts. Beau Henry converted and the Dragons went into halftime leading 20-16.

Five minutes into the first half and Dragons fullback Henry Raiwalui sliced through a staggered Rabbitohs defensive line and outstretched his arm to score near the posts. Henry converted the try and the Dragons extended their lead to 26-16.

Not long after the Dragons were at it again, this time Beau Henry showed some good footwork and strength to score close to the line in the 50th minute. Henry converted his own try and took the score out to 32-16.

Although the Rabbitohs hit back five minutes later, when second-rower Brock Molan barged his way over from dummy-half. Reynolds converted the try and the Rabbitohs cut the Dragons lead back to 32-22.

In the 65th minute the Rabbitohs went over again, when some good ball movement seen center Josh Mansour score out wide. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful by Reynolds and the score remained Dragons 32, Rabbitohs 26.

In the 76th minute Luke Capewell swooped on a loose ball and looked certain to score except for a last-ditch try saving tackle from Henry Raiwalui.

The exact same scenario was played out two minutes later when Capewell ran away from the Dragons defense and went close to scoring, except for another try saver from Raiwalui, which forced Capewell to lose the ball on grounding it.

Was it 26 - 18 Eels over Panthers or 24 - 18???
It was confusing.

When I posted the scores NRL Stats had Jason Baitieri listed as a goal. I knew he didn't kick it but they listed it as a goal. They have since corrected it. Final Score 24 - 18
