DRAGONS TOYOTA CUP DEFEAT EELS 44-16

The Dragons Toyota Cup side have tonight continued their good form by beating the Eels 44 – 16 at WIN Jubilee Oval Kogarah.

Parramatta were the first team to post points when a nice backline movement seen Eels winger Brad Graham score in the 5th minute in the south-western corner. The conversion attempt was successful by TK Amosa and the Eels went to an early 6-0 lead.

In the 20th minute the Dragons hit back through winger Joe Vickery, who was on the end of a good pass from Chris Astill. Vickery still had work to do though, hitting and spinning away from three defenders, to score in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful by Henry and the score was 6-4.

In the 26th minute some good off-loading by the Dragons forwards, seen Chris Astill with room to move close to the line and he subsequently scored near the posts. Beau Henry converted and the Dragons took a 10-6 lead.

Ten minutes later and Chris Astill was in again, this time after some good lead-up play from Mitch Rein which seen Shannon Wakeman go through a gap, before off-loading to Chris Astill who scored under the posts. The conversion attempt was successful by Henry and the Dragons went into half-time leading 16-6.

The Dragons opened the scoring in the second-half through a well-timed backline movement, which seen Beau Henry find Chris Astill wrapping around the back of the Dragons attack, with Astill showing good hands to find Dean Whare who dived over in the corner. Beau Henry converted and took the Dragons lead out to 22-6.

Only three minutes later and Whare was in again, this time doing most of the work on his own, stepping his way through a number of defenders to score under the posts. The conversion attempt was successful by Henry and the Dragons took a 28-6 lead.

The Eels hit back in the 60th minute, when a long cut-out ball seen Eels winger Ryan Morgan score in the north-eastern corner. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful by Amosa and the Eels cut the Dragons lead to 26-10.

Five minutes later and the Eels scored off a well-timed bomb, which was taken beautifully by Eels winger Brad Graham. TK Amosa kicked the conversion and the Dragons lead was reduced to 28-16.

However the young Dragons then went on a point scoring spree, scoring three tries in the final fifteen minutes.

The first was to Dragons lock-forward Nathan Jones, who ran onto a nice short-ball from Kyle Stanley in the 69th minute to score just to the right of the posts. The conversion was successful by Henry and the Dragons took their lead out to 34-16.

In the 75th minute Kyle Stanley got a try of his own, showing some good footwork, to score close to the posts. Henry converted and the Dragons took a 40-16 lead.

In one of the final plays of the game Dragons centre Dean Whare outpaced a number of Eels defenders to score out wide and bag his third try of the night. Joe Vickery missed the sideline conversion and the final score remained Dragons 44, Eels 16.

WESTS TIGERS BEAT BULLDOGS 58-16 IN TOYOTA CUP

Wests Tigers recorded a crushing 58-16 victory over the Bulldogs at the Sydney Football Stadium tonight in round 26 of the Toyota Cup competition.

The victory secures fourth places in the finals for Wests Tigers.

Wests Tigers received a boost for the game when five-ighth Robert Lui - the Toyota Cup five-eighth of the year - was a late inclusion, replacing Jay Florimo.

It was Lui who opened the scoring for Wests Tigers in the ninth minute when he ran five metres and pushed his way through two defenders to score near the posts for a 4-0 lead.

The try came on the back off an initial 60 metre break by centre Joel Wisbey.

Half-back Darren Nicholls converted the try for a 6-0 lead. Nicholls is doing the kicking for Jake Mullaney, who was a late withdrawal in the warm-up through illness.

Lui scored his second try in the 17th minute when he put through a grubber kick which bounced off a Bulldogs player's leg and into his arm to score behind the posts. Nicholls converted the try for a 12-0 lead.

A loose pass saw Lui toe the ball through and pick it up before flicking the ball back inside for prop Aaron Woods to score under the posts. Woods got up after scoring his first try of the season. His 'wolfman' beard was shaved off last week before the Titans game.

Nicholls converted the try for an 18-0 lead.

The Bulldogs opened their account when an inside ball after a miss tackled by Woods saw half-back Rhys Jack score. Centre Lachlan Goward converted the try for an 18-6 scoreline after 26 minutes.

Wests Tigers prop Andrew Fifita extended the lead to 22-6 when he charged through two defenders from five metres out to score. Nicholls converted the try for a 24-6 lead after 28 minutes.

A great right arm offload in a two man tackle by second-riower Simon Dwyer found Lui in support whp raced 30 metres before linking up with winger Sama Sauvao to race away to score under the posts. Nicholls converted the try for a 30-6 lead after 33 minutes.

Wisbey got in on the tryscoring action when he used his strength out wide to crash over in the corner for a 34-6 lead. Nicholls converted the try for a 36-6 lead.

2nd Half
Wests Tigers second-rower Jason Schirnack got in on the action when he scored in the corner for a 42-6 lead.

The Bulldogs then scored consecutive tries for a 42-16 scoreline.

A break and an offload by Andrew Fifita led to forward Leivaha Pulu scoring out wide for a 46-16 lead before winger Joel Jackson then scored two tries to give Wests Tigers a 58-16 victory.

I wonder whether they'll protest the result given Melbourne were awarded a conversion that missed.

A little bit of Trivia the Melbourne Storm & New Zealand Warriors now hold the record for the Highest Scoring Match in Toyota Cup History scoring a total of 90 points.

They beat the previous records.

Bulldogs & Canberra Raiders scored a total of 88 points in their Round 7 match at Canberra Stadium. (Final Score 52-36 Bulldogs).

Wests Tigers & Sydney Roosters scored a total of 88 points in their Round 22 match at Canberra Stadium. (Final Score 56-32 Wests Tigers).

Bulldogs & Sydney Roosters. They scored a total of 82 points in their 2008 Round 16 match at the Sydney Football Stadium. (Final Score 56-26 Bulldogs)

Technically they should be tied on 88 however the touchies got a call wrong and awarded a goal that missed so they break the record.

You got the impression the ref knew it missed too as it took a while to blow his whistle.

Terrible decision, but the Warriors should never have lost.

Beaten at death - Vodafone Junior Warriors 44, Melbourne 46

Melbourne scored four tries in the last 10 minutes – three to Aucklander Matt Duffie – to steal a dramatic two-point win over the Vodafone Junior Warriors in a 90-point NYC thriller at Mount Smart Stadium tonight.

The home side bolted to a 16-0 inside 13 minutes and was seemingly well set for its fifth straight win and by another big margin.

But almost as quickly the Storm levelled up at 16-16 before the sides headed to the halftime break locked at 20-20 after a hectic first 40 minutes. What happened in the second half was difficult to credit.

The first 22 minutes went to script for the Vodafone Junior Warriors as they raced in for four tries to streak to a 44-24 lead (the fourth time in the last five weeks that they’ve topped 40 points). It ought to have been game over with that score still standing with 10 minutes to go.

But the face of the contest changed as Melbourne engineered a withering finish with tries in the 70th, 72nd and 77th minutes to draw within two points of the Vodafone Junior Warriors at 42-44.
And in the final minute, Duffie had his third try wide out to give Melbourne the lead for the first time in the match and, with it, victory.

The result lifted Melbourne to second spot momentarily with the Vodafone Junior Warriors remaining sixth.

However, the likely outcome on form for the first week of the finals after the rest of this weekend’s matches should see the Storm settling in third and the Vodafone Junior Warriors seventh, meaning the Auckland team would face an away play-off against second-ranked St George Illawarra.

Week One Finals are confirmed - the Brisbane v Canberra result won't change the standings as both sides are 3 points shy of their nearest opponent. I have noted likely venues as these will be confirmed by the NRL tonight:

4 v 5 - Wests Tigers v Brisbane
Leichhardt or Campbelltown, standalone on Saturday

3 v 6 - Storm v Rabbitohs
Etihad Stadium, Friday with Storm v Manly

2 v 7 - Dragons v Warriors
WIN Jubilee Oval, Sunday with Dragons v Eels

1 v 8 - Manly v Canberra
Brookvale Oval, standalone on Saturday

Why would they be standalone fixtures?? Wouldn't you just play Manly/Canberra at ANZ the Saturday night? And I thought ALL NYC semis were the to be played before ALL NRL semis. :?
