Transfer Window

Like the EPL we need transfer windows in the NRL.

All the contract talk and movement has taken the attention away from the game and has ended a few teams chances this year already.

Only contract talks and negotiations are to occur during the window.

Any business outside these, say two windows a year will result in life bans.

I hate that changes occur during the season.

Hayne joined the tits in round 20 last year.

Moses may have helped the Tigers have a crap start to the season, then bam can f**k it up for Parra as well.

Even my raiders took Paulo mid year.last year

Whats wrong with the off season.

The issue with a transfer window is that all people talk about for months before a transfer window appears is the upcoming transfer window

Rabbits toes has the right idea. Make it a transfer door. That'll stop all this window rubbish

If you think players talking to their managers and managers talking to clubs off the records outside of transfer periods doesn't occur then you want your head tested to see if you're brain dead

Moving from a Sydney club to Sydney club isn't an issue, players don't need to sell and move the family, same with Brisbane and GC players interchanging during the off-season but for the other clubs it's a clusterf**k if they are to move to NZ, Melbourne, Canberra, Townsville and even Newcastle. Some forward thinking needs to be done during the season.

Happen in the North American majors all the time.

You can be playing in Montreal one night and Dallas the next night.

I know they get paid more...

They've tried it and it has failed. Why? The players and the clubs. Remember the 30 June deadline what would happen? You'd get deals announced the next day. Then the June cool off rule. It died for similar reasons. The way it is now is because the NRL know the players and the clubs just won't abide by it.

Even in sports like the NFL where they have a free agent signing periods, how many deals are announced on the first day of the period? Heaps of them, even though in those sports (e.g. the NFL) it is supposed to be illegal to negotiate before the period opens, yet a heap of them will be announced within hours of it happening.

But it keeps it out of the media.

Everything has snowballed now and damages the game for the fans.

Problem with windows and doors is that they could get locked and lose the key.

I prefer it be an open archway if anything. If you are worried about flys, we can install one of those magnetic flyscreens you see on TV. I'd settle for a bead curtain

You must have a short memory because the same rumors when in the press before the 30 June deadline. The only difference now is we get actual confirmation rather than journos making shit up all the time

The idea is getting some traction in the media. Todd Greenberg's response about it is rather limp though. His comment 'If that’s a discussion that players would like to have with us' suggests nothing will happen.

Transfer period? NRL contract musical chairs has fans, pundits in a headspin

"Don’t fret. You’re certainly not alone.

The past week has rugby league punters and pundits in a frenzy, and it’s hard to remember which way is up.

Wests Tigers have a new coach. Des Hasler is sticking around. Cooper Cronk may or may not be hanging up the studs.

And on top of all that, no one seems to know what’s happening at Concord.

Thank goodness there’s a football game played occasionally to help distract us from the constant musical chairs that is the rugby league player market.

But, for the moment at least, the NRL ladder is taking a back seat to the comings and goings of players across the competition.

And while the ongoing news cycle is good news for journalists looking for a yarn, it’s got to be frustrating for the players and coaches trying to keep their focus between the goalposts.

It begs the question — would an NRL trade period serve the game better than the current set-up?

The AFL has a dedicated 10-day trade window in the off-season in which all player transfers must be completed.

It’s unlikely the NRL will adopt the same model, but it’s an argument that’s been raised again this week in light of the kerfuffle involving the Tigers’ four big-name players Mitchell Moses, Aaron Woods, Luke Brooks, and James Tedesco.

NRL boss Todd Greenberg said on Thursday he would be open to discussing the introduction of a trade period, but doesn’t think the players would bite.

“If that’s a discussion that players would like to have with us we’re open to it but they enjoy free-trade at the moment and that’s a big part of their negotiation,” Greenberg said.

“We’ve tinkered with it over a period of time to try and put some transparency into this space, and it’s never going to be a perfect science.”

Aside from the Tigers’ big guns, there’s the likes of Kieran Foran, Jack Bird, and now Cooper Cronk muddying the waters with uncertainty over their respective futures.

Wayne Bennett has admitted Anthony Milford’s on-field performances may be being effected by his ongoing contract negotiation at the Broncos.

Already since the start of the year we’ve seen — by our count — seven players jump ship from one NRL club to another with immediate effect.

Five others have signed for rival clubs while committing to playing out 2017 with their current team.

That’s not including Mitchell Moses who’s reportedly signed for Parramatta, or Jack Bird who is said to be on the verge of joining Newcastle.

Then there’s been defections to rugby and multiple retirements.

The rumour mill has Aaron Woods headed to Canterbury, James Tedesco headed to the Roosters, and Foran headed to any number of clubs that aren’t the Warriors.

OK, OK ... before our heads explode, check out the full list of done deals and off-contract players as it stands."

The only reason the rumour mungers are so loud in league (in comparison to the American sports) is that our clubs are still so useless at dealing with the media. They see it as a chore. Whereas it is a core requirement of being an NFL or NBA coach to be an expert in dealing with the media. They basically understand that that is where their fortune is coming from so they charm the hell out of them.
The NRL still hasn't worked out that if you are secretive the media will go digging for their own stuff. Clubs are better off drowning the media in stories. This is another area that our competitor in the cold states kick our arses in.

The player managers running the game dont want it, so that is that. They dont want the Salary cap either so that will eventually go, though they find their way around it either way. Greed wins.

Something like the arc de triomphe? Nice solid structure, bit of history behind it?

We trchnically have two periods today

Pre-Jun 30 for any in season transfers eg 2017 changes

Post Nov 1 for year after contracts eg for 2019 contracts

I think half of the problem is the lack of Salary Cap confirmation

Only in the last week or so has the 2018 Salary Cap looking like firming

Clubs and player managers have been holding off on some of their Nov 1 2016 negotiations for the 2018 season under a better understand of the 2018 and 2019 cap figures and revised player minimum wages
