Travel Tips

Messages

Hi everyone,
I'm about to depart on a 6 week tour of the UK and Europe, before finishing up with a week in Singapore, and I thought I would tap into the wealth of life experience on offer in this forum.
I just thought I would ask if anybody has any travel tips to share with me.
I'm backpacking and doing a lot of travelling over the 6 weeks, in order to see as much as possible.
If anybody has any tips on: things to see, things to do, things not to see and do and any other general travel advice for me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance

Well youngie, firstly I'd like to wish all the best for your trip. IMO, there are few things in the world better than travel.

The best tip I can give you is to travel light.
I have been overseas dozens of times and the best times I have ever had was when I didn't have to worry about baggage claim.
There's no fun spending hours of your holiday waiting for things that couldn't be placed in the overhead compartment.
Anything you can't carry over shoulder should be left behind.
The length of the trip is irrelevant. Apart from toiletries, first aid stuff,a sewing kit and a flask of mothers milk, you need little more other then a change of clothes.

If you're staying with the locals and not staying in hotels, there is one important rule which if observed, will never let you down...
...wash the dishes. It sounds silly but believe me, if the first thing you do is to wash someone else's dishes, they'll feed you for a week...lol.
I have no idea if you are staying in pre arranged accomodation or just landing on your feet but either way, the 'dish washing rule' seems to stick firm.

Good luck but most of all... have fun

Absolutely Ozbash. Youngie will have his pencil in hand at some stage of his trip no doubt, so rubbers are essential for the travelling Australian.

I would recommend that you look after the sharpener, and only use on at a time......;)
Youngie, i would have zero experience on overseas travel. But, i have had a few cousins who have done the trip via backpacking and bus trips and they have loved it. One of my cousins has been living in London for over a year now, the only job he has had has been a barman. it pays well, and some 'people' apparently love an aussie accent ;)
Just stick around friendly people and be friendly yourself. I don't think there is any better advice to be had.....
Enjoy!
Moff.

Only visitMelbourne if you really have to and minimise your time there.

You have all so chosen some expensive places to visit and be warned. An English Pound may be worth three times as much as an Australian Dollar, but for a lot of things, it has the same buying power. Be warned. Middlesbrough is a whole and keep a hold of your wallet if you visit Liverpool.

If you want cheep accomadation, just rock up to Gav BT's house with a Blackburn Jumper on. If your staying in Yorkshire, you can shoot a Scotsman with a cross bow if he knocks on your door. You might want to get the last one confirmed.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think that a few rubbers will be most essential, with any luck I will have a few occasions to make some corrections.

Willow, I've got some organised accomadation, and otherwise I'll just be finding my way around. The dishwashing tip is a good one, simple, but I can see the benefits.

TheSaint, I'm expecting to be spending a fair bit off money. I've been planning this trip for a year and I've been working hard and saving everything I can all year, so I feel I'm pretty sweet for money. It's going to be going out to pubs and clubs that will drain my wallet, hopefully I can play up the Aussie thing and get some drinks bought for me.
