Im going.
Looking forward to seeing how our backline goes. Parra have IMO one of the best backlines in the comp and I really wanna see how the likes of SKD and Sa go against them.

EELS HOLD OUT ROOSTERS IN TOYOTA CUP TRIAL
Saturday 1 March 2008

http://www.parraeels.com.au/news/news1703.shtml

Parramatta has scored a gutsy 39-34 victory over the Sydney Roosters in their Toyota Cup trial match at Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium.

The Eels led 28-12 at the break but found themselves trailing by two points midway through the second half following a determined Roosters resurgence.

In the finish second half tries to Tim Mannah and Daniel Mortimer – two of the standouts for the match – was enough to see the Eels home.

After conceding the first try the Eels hit top gear, five first half tries seeing them lead 26-12 into the break.

The first went the way of winger Owen Lauofo, who flirted with the corner post before planting the ball over the line.

Tony Williams missed with the conversion however after trailing early the Eels were back in the game at 6-4.

From there it was all the Eels, Domenic Nasso touching down off a beautiful offload from skipper Tim Mannah.

Further tries to Daniel Mortimer, Shaun Cox and Joe Mataele saw the Eels lead by 14 at the break, the Roosters only other score for the half coming through wing Alan Heldsingher after a Parramatta turnover just before half time.

The resumption saw the Eels fall into a deep slumber, the Roosters running in three straight tries through Rohan Ahern, Galu Teo and Jake Friend to take the lead at 28-26.

Mannah got his side back in the hunt, scoring beside the posts 20 minutes from time to put the Eels back into the lead at 32-28.

Then Mortimer got his second, stepping twice off his left foot in a carbon copy of his first to score under the posts.

The conversion made it 38-28 and the Eels looked home.

However the Roosters would come back once again, Teo grabbing his second to make it a four point game with seven minutes left on the clock.

Tony Williams put the result beyond doubt with just seconds left on the clock, nailing a field goal from in front to help the Eels record a 39-24 victory.

PARRAMATTA 39

Tries: Daniel Mortimer 2, Owen Lauofo, Domenic Nasso, Shaun Cox, Joe Mataele, Tim Mannah

Parramatta fullback Luke Burt has shone in his first game back from a knee reconstruction in the Eels' 34-18 NRL trial victory over the Sydney Roosters at Bluetongue Stadium.

Both sides were missing about a third of their best line-ups and the Eels were the much slicker unit, their outside backs outclassing the Roosters in the six-tries-to-three win.

Burt started the match with a 40-20 kick in the opening minute of the clash and barely put a foot wrong, scoring a try and landing five from six with the boot.

Jarryd Hayne set up the first try for Parramatta in the fifth minute.

He showed a liking for the centres by punching a hole through the Roosters' defence and scooting for 40m before offloading 5m out to winger Eric Grothe who touched down.

Hayne proved elusive again in the 22nd minute with a slick combination with Grothe securing Parramatta's second touchdown of the game, but Burt missed the conversion this time.

Hayne's strong performance showed enough to suggest he will be able to fill the void left by the explosive Timana Tahu's crossing of codes to the NSW Waratahs in the off-season.

Just before halftime, the Eels were at it again with a slick 50m movement that started with Mark Riddell finding Feleti Mateo and ended with Josh Cordoba crossing near the posts.

The Roosters finally put a neat attacking raid together just before halftime with Amos Roberts finishing off and skipper Craig Fitzgibbon converting to cut the Eels' lead to 16-6 at halftime.

The Eels continued to be the much cleaner side with the ball, backrower Weller Hauraki juggling the ball before slipping through the Roosters' defence close to the line eight minutes after the break.

Parramatta tried to put their foot down in the 62nd minute with back-up hooker Matt Keating setting up Burt to cross under the sticks.

But the Roosters scored two tries in four minutes with Anthony Minichiello and Roberts crossing.

Mark Riddell ended the Roosters' resurgence by barging his way over the line with six minutes to go to wrap up the match.

The Roosters open their NRL season Friday week against Souths at ANZ Stadium while the Eels play the Bulldogs the following evening at the same venue.

Parras backline were the standouts tonight, they looked dangerous every time they threw it wide. They scored a couple of slick tries through the middle of the ruck as well. I thought Mateo was impressive at 5/8, even if he did make a couple of errors.

Roosters just gave away too much ball and never really found rhythm. A couple of good tries toward the end of the game made the scoreline a bit respectable.

All in all, an entertaining game.

Any positives to take out of the game for us Chooks?

Parra looked like they were playing for match fitness while we played like a training session. EG Parra were jusy throwing the ball around to whoever wanted it while we were trying set play after set play getting ready for the season proper.
SKD still has his habit of coming out of the line for the intercept but they were Finch balls so I don't blame him. O Meley played well as did Shillo and Mini.
Personally watching the 2nd half from both teams sh*t me to tears, stupid penalties and just a pain to watch.
I expected that scoreline with Parras backline. Ah well hope we get them in the season proper.

Smith could be back for round one
March 01, 2008

TROUBLED Parramatta half-back Tim Smith is an outside chance of playing in his NRL side's season-opener against the Bulldogs on Saturday week.

Eels coach Michael Hagan said Smith, who has been dogged by alcohol problems during his short career, could be fit to play at ANZ Stadium following their 34-18 NRL trial win over Sydney Roosters.

"I am not sure he will be back for round one, we have to be mindful of what he is coming back from and getting him right," Hagan said.

"That would be a good situation to be in if he could play."

Hagan was happy with his halves combination of Brett Finch and Feleti Mateo at Bluetongue Stadium this evening and said a specialist would have a look at Smith's troublesome shoulder on Monday.

Eels full-back Luke Burt earlier shone in his first game back from a knee reconstruction in the six-tries-to-three win, scoring a try and landing five from six with the boot.

Burt was relieved to have finished the game unscathed and felt his side was warming up well for the season proper.

"It was great to get a game under my belt before the season starts and get through it," he said.

"I was very nervous before the game, I was struggling a bit."

Burt was not the only player impressing for the Eels with Jarryd Hayne looking right at home at centre.

Hayne punched a hole through the Roosters defence in the fifth minute to set up the opening try before combining with winger Eric Grothe to score one of his own later in the half.

His display was enough to suggest he will be able to fill the void left by the explosive Timana Tahu's crossing of codes to New South Wales in the off-season.

Parramatta coach Michael Hagan said: "I thought Jarryd in particular was good with the footy but I thought his defence was very good.

"He and Eric have practiced a fair bit there and so I am sure that will get better, there were some good signs there."

Burt thought Hayne could be on the way to filling the big shoes of Tahu.

"We did lose T but then you get a guy like Haynesy taking that spot there and you could put Haynesy anywhere in the back line and he is going to kill it," Burt said.

"T was a big loss but Haynesy is looking like he has done the job the last couple of weeks and I am really looking forward to playing behind him."

Roosters coach Brad Fittler felt his side was exposed around the ruck against the speedy Eels but can be encouraged by the work of five-eighth Braith Anasta, who set up two tries for Amos Roberts.

The Roosters open their NRL season Friday week against Souths at ANZ Stadium.
