Panthers trial results from this weekend:

Civoniceva has first run with Panthers
February 16, 2008

NEW Penrith skipper Petero Civoniceva had his first run in new colours as the Panthers kick-started their 2008 NRL campaign with a series of low key trials at Windsor.

The entire Panthers squad from the juniors right through to the top grade had a run, but all eyes were on Civoniceva following his off-season move from Brisbane.

The Australia prop didn't disappoint either, leading an experimental Panthers outfit to a 28-0 win over the Erina Jim Beam Cup side in a 30 minute trial.

Panthers coach Matthew Elliott used the match to test out a few new combinations, which included a new halves pairing featuring last year's rookie sensation Jarrod Sammut at halfback and former New South Wales winger Luke Lewis at five-eighth.

Sammut showed plenty of heart and potential when thrust into the top grade at fullback last year, but with Rhys Wesser back from injury, his path to the No.1 jumper appears blocked.

One of Sammut's rivals for the halfback spot, former South Sydney No.7 Joe Williams, missed the trial due to a virus.

Elliott rested most of his first choice players for the second 30-minute clash which ended with the Panthers running out 16-0 winners over the Windsor Jim Beam Cup side.

The Panthers step up the 2008 preparations with their first official trial against Parramatta in Albury on Friday night.

Their final pre-season game is against the Bulldogs on March 2 at ANZ Stadium.

Rooney gets Panthers home

February 22, 2008

http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,23261727-23214,00.html

A LUKE Rooney double in the dying stages handed Penrith a 30-28 victory over Parramatta in their NRL trial at Lavington Sports Ground in Albury.

Rooney crossed in the 74th and 75th minute to cap a remarkable comeback, Jarrod Sammut landing a pair of conversions from the touchline as the Panthers charged home after trailing by 16 points at the start of the final quarter.

It was some sort of return for former Australia winger Rooney, who hadn't played since last May after undergoing surgery for a neck injury.

Trent Waterhouse, Rhys Wesser and Sammut also got on the scoresheet, Sammut finishing with a match haul of 14 points in a performance which is likely to go a long way to securing him the No.7 jumper for the NRL season opener against Brisbane.

Panthers coach Matthew Elliott paid tribute to new skipper Petero Civoniceva after the game, saying the former Bronco was desperate to get back on the field late in the game to help secure his side a first-up win.

While mildly disappointed with the result, Parramatta coach Michael Hagan was nonetheless happy with his side's opening performance of 2008 after they ran up a 28-12 lead after three quarters.

"I'm pretty happy with what we got done and the winning and losing wasn't too much of a concern for us," Hagan said.

"We had quite a few younger players that handles it pretty well."

Hagan said he was happy with how his new halves combination of Feleti Mateo and Brett Finch handled the playmaking role, the pair likely to be in the No.6 and No.7 jumpers respectively come round one with regular halfback Tim Smith still recovering from off-season shoulder surgery.

The only slight concern for the Eels was a medial ligament strain to Justin Horo, while the Panthers are hopeful of having Luke Priddis available for their final trial against the Bulldogs in two weeks time after he was forced from the field with a corked shoulder.

EELS POSITIVE DESPITE NARROW TRIAL LOSS TO PANTHERS
Friday 22 February 2008

Pirtek Parramatta Eels head coach Michael Hagan has heaped praise on his young team despite a 30 points to 28 loss to Penrith in their NRL trial at Albury’s Lavington Sports Ground.

Two near identical four pointers to Luke Rooney – in the 74th and 75th minutes of the match – sunk the Eels after they had led 28 points to 12 early in the second half.

The double strike came after the Eels outperformed their opponents for much of the first 60 minutes of play, during which they crossed for five tries to two.

Despite the result head coach Hagan said he was pleased with the effort shown.

“I was pretty happy overall, it was the first game of the year and we came with quite a few young players who I thought handled it extremely well,” Hagan said.

“We think we’ve got some good talent in the football team and we probably left eight or ten of our better players behind.

“There were signs there that were fairly encouraging, Feleti Mateo and Brett Finch ran the team well, so did young Kris Keating and also Matt Keating was very tidy.

“We’re very much looking forward to next week.”

The Eels trailed early after Penrith lock Trent Waterhouse scored the first try of the match off a neatly held pass from Jarrod Sammut.

Sammut converted to make it six-nil to the Panthers after 11 minutes.

Overcoming a momentary lack of possession the Eels found the tryline ten minutes later through Joel Reddy, who touched down after a break down the short side by Krisnan Inu.

Inu then added the extras to put the match back on level terms.

The Panthers edged ahead again through a try to Rhys Wesser however the Eels wasted no time in hitting back, fullback Etu Uaisele reaping the spoils of a well placed Brett Finch cross kick to score in the corner.

The Eels then took the lead, Matt Keating burrowing his way over next to the posts for Jarryd Hayne to convert and make it 16-12 Parramatta’s way after half an hour.

The first ten minutes after half time looked to have proved decisive for the Eels with two converted tries stretching the buffer to 16 points at 28-12.

The first came just 60 seconds after the break, lock Weller Hauraki scoring off some excellent lead up work from Junior Paulo and Kris Keating.

Eight minutes later the Eels were in again, Mark Riddell scoring off a neat kick and re-gather.

Tony Williams converted both tries to give the Eels breathing space.

Sammut narrowed the gap for the Panthers with 20 minutes remaining, scoring and converting to make it 28-18 the Eels way.

He then converted both Rooney tries to put the Panthers back in front at 30 to 28.

The Eels had one last surge and threatened the line wide out, only for the ball to sail over the sideline just before full time.

The only concern to come out of the match for the Eels was a medial ligament strain to young second rower Justin Horo, who will undergo scans in coming days.

The Eels play the Roosters next week at Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium, Gosford.

Feb 22 - The Panthers beat the Eels 30-28 in their NRL trial tonight at Lavington Oval - but it was a close run thing.

With 60 minutes gone, they trailed by 16 points and drew even with just under four minutes remaining.

Petero Civoniceva showed why the club was so eager to get his services, and so quick to make him captain. He led from the front as he promised and as Head Coach Matt Elliott said later in response to a question about Petero's leadership: even injured and sitting in the coach's box he would make an enormous difference to the side.

In fact it was a superb effort by Petero that led to Penrith's first try - he handled the ball twice and made a total of 20 metres in one set, finally getting the ball to Jarrod Sammut who popped it to Trent Waterhouse to score.

Sammut played most of the game at halfback and showed there is no doubt he has the ability to make the spot his own. Josh McCrone also played at halfback for a while but it was Sammut who was the standout in that position tonight. As the coach said later, Jarrod is going to be hard to shake from that position now. But Joe Williams will get his chance in next week's trial, assuming he is fit.

Sammut also had a perfect night with the boot, including two sideline conversions with a crosswind.

Another plus was the return of Luke Rooney for the first time since he injured his neck early last year. He scored two tries - but more than that, he had a very solid game and looked dangerous every time he got the ball..

Luke Priddis was missed, going off early in the second quarter with a corked shoulder. It was only a light one, but the doctor was taking no chances. Luke should be back next week.

The Panthers played for the first time in their 2008 away strip and it looked sensational.

Penrith Panthers 30 (tries: Luke Rooney 2, Trent Waterhouse, Rhys Wesser, Jarrod Sammut; goals: Sammut 5/5) Parramatta Eels 28 (tries: Joel Reddy, Etu Uaisele, Matthew Raftery, Weller Hauraki, Mark Riddell; goals: Jarryd Hayne 1/2, Tony Williams 2, Krishnan Inu)

Crowd: Approx 8,000
