Raiders name Broncos trial squad
19 Feb, 2008

The CFMEU Canberra Raiders have named a squad of 24 players to travel to Orange this weekend, for their first full NRL trial of the season against the Brisbane Broncos at Wade Park.

It's the first chance Raiders fans will get to see new recruit Joel Monaghan in action following his return to his former club at the end of the 2007 season, while the Raiders Coaching staff will use the match to work on some new combinations in key positions.

Raiders Coach Neil Henry said with the exclusion of Todd Carney through injury he expected to rotate most of his key positions, with Terry Campese, Michael Dobson and Marc Herbert all set to share the bulk of the playmaking duties of five-eighth and halfback, while Lincoln Withers and Ryan Hinchcliffe would spend the match rotating at hooker.

With William Zillman also unavailable through injury Henry also expected to rotate his backline during the match, with Bronx Goodwin, Phil Graham and Colin Best all set to get a taste at fullback, while Graham, Best, Monaghan and Adrian Purtell would all get a chance in the centre position.

After returning from injury, forwards Tom Learoyd-Lahrs and Nigel Plum will not be used in the trial at Orange on Saturday night. Instead they will travel to Rockhampton with the Raiders Toyota Cup squad in a bid to get more on-field time.

This move allows the Green Machine to test a number of other combinations in the forward pack, with Michael Weyman, Dane Tilse, Scott Logan, Troy Thompson and Trevor Thurling to share the duties up front, with Alan Tongue, Glen Turner, Marshall Chalk, Josh Miller and Ben Jones set to play in the Raiders back row.

With positions up for grabs the match promises to be a bruising affair, and with only one more trial scheduled after this weekend, this could be the best indication of where the Raiders will start in round one on March 15.

Both teams agreed to play basically full strenght sides to help try and cover the financial cost of holding the game, the club which arranged the trial apparently took out a 30k loan to make this happen and must pay back the council soon after the game

Good to see both teams have stuck solid. A real test for both sides imo

Geez, it wasn't that tight budget-wise when the Mariners and QLD played an A-League pre season match mid-2007... :?

It was a partnership between Orange Hawks and Bloomfield Hawks that hosted the game. It was also 40k, and it wasn't so much a loan, as it was the local council underwrote the night. The financial cost was payed for in part by ticket sales, which were very good, and catering, corporate boxes etc. at the ground. The night was also run by volunteers, as far as ground management, food stall attendees and bar staff.

The contract ensuring both teams played near full strength wasn't as much to do with ticket sales as it was to ensuring the game was high profile - in order to better allow for promotion.

Chalk one up for plucky Raiders

A STUNNING 11-minute burst lifted Canberra to victory over Brisbane last night night and ruined a golden start to the season for Broncos flyer Darius Boyd.

Boyd scored a hat-trick of tries, but that was lost as the Raiders scored four tries in the final third of the 90-minute match.

The Broncos appeared to be cruising when Boyd brought up his hat-trick in the 55th minute, finishing a superb 95-metre movement to give his side a 16-12 lead.

But Marshall Chalk and Joel Monaghan scored two tries apiece in the dying stages to give the Raiders an impressive victory in an entertaining trial played in 30-minute thirds.

CANBERRA 32 (M Chalk 2, J Monaghan 2, M Weyman, R Hinchcliffe tries; M Dobson 2, M Herbert, T Campese goals) BRISBANE 16 (D Boyd 3, D Kemp tries). Crowd: 8500.Referee: Ben Cummins.
