The game will see a Latin American rugby league side pitted against North American opponents.

Apprentices’ on the international rugby league stage, the Latin Heat will enforce a tongue-in-cheek ‘No Trump’ policy when they bunker down for the Battle of the Americas against the USA and Canada on Friday, September 30, at St Mary’s Stadium, west of Sydney.

“Sure, if Senor Trump was to attend, we’d allow him general admission for $5 just like every other supporter,” Latin Heat president Daniel Godinez said.

“But our players would have no interest in meeting him, based on his widely-reported comments and policies regarding Latino people.

“Our focus will be on the game, and indeed, against such tough opposition we know that we’ll need to form a defensive wall to keep the North Americans out.”

Formed of players with heritage in Latino nations from Mexico in the north to Chile and Argentina in the south, Latin Heat has been encouraging the expansion of rugby league since 2013.

Their last performance brought a 54-16 win against fellow emerging team the Thailand Stars in January and their new coach is former Australian representative Aaron Raper.

However, their rivals on the Labour Day long weekend in Sydney will have plenty at stake, with spots up for grabs at next year’s Rugby League World Cup.

The North Americans – also known as the CanAm Grizzlies – will feature a mix of USA and Canadian players.

Both nations have been steadily strengthening as international forces and the USA players will have the distinct possibility of earning a spot on Brian McDermott’s World Cup roster.

Hopes are the Liberty Cup – Battle of the Americas will become an annual fixture between the Latinos and North Americans.

Kick-off will be at 6.30pm, Friday September 30 at St Mary’s Stadium, Forrester Road, St Mary’s.

For rugby league fans visiting Sydney for NRL grand final week, St Mary’s is accessible via train from Central Station and is located 15 minutes east of Penrith Panthers Leagues Club.

The Latin Heat will be giving fans two events to attend over the weekend, with a Latino Development Squad to face Africa United the following day, Saturday, October 1 at Liverpool.

That match will be a celebration of rugby league’s humanitarian powers, with several players from both teams coming from refugee families accepted by Australia.

In other games on the Latin Heat calendar, the Youth Squads (under 18s and under 16s) will both feature in NRL One Community events on Saturday, October 8 at a venue yet to be announced.

Expressions of interest are also being sought for those interested in forming a female team of players of Latino heritage, and mixed-sex Latino Oztag squads.

Plans are being laid for an Introduction to Rugby League event in Brisbane in late October, targeting the Brazilian, Colombian and El Salvadoran communities of Queensland.
