According to a press report a couple of days ago it came in 13th with 499,000 or so viewers. Not that good considering the importance of the game and the fact that it was between two popular Sydney teams.

What's your source for the claim that it's a record for Friday Night?
Earlier this year, I think it was Newcastle-Paramatta, got over 500,000 (there was a lot of talk about it on the WORL forum) and there have certainly been instances of Friday night games getting into the top ten shows in Sydney over the years.
The AFL in Melbourne has had 500,000+ audiences twice in the one weekend (Friday night and Saturday night) this year. No wonder their TV contract is so much better than League's.
I just can't believe an audence that small could be a record of any sort.

I am pretty sure the chanel 9commentary team mentioned it during sundays game. I guess it could of been a record for the year but I got the impression it included previous seasons. If I get the chance I will check the tape for what was said exactly.
I do remember friday night games been in the top 10 before but mostly for semis.

The semis will definitely rate in the top ten. An interesting article in yesterdays papers stated that nine had done a backflip and will not be showing AFL games live on Friday night in Sydney or Brisbane. It will be a delayed telecast at 11pm. Wayne Jackson is a fool for beleiving anything nine said. Did he really think nine would sacrifice league in NSW and QLD and show AFL in prime time live? Are there a few chiks starting to appear in the AFL's armour with this latest development and Barrassi's comments about the game becoming ugly?

The agreement was that Channel 10 would be showing Swans and Lions games in prime time on Saturdays in Sydney and Brisbane. That still stands.
Channel 9 was always going to show Rugby League in Sydney and Brisbane on Friday nights (while showing the AFL in the South), so I don't even understand the article (which I haven't seen). They gave part of the rights to 10 so that some games would get into prime time in the northern capitals (as the AFL stipulated). Where's the backflip?
However there may be some good news for League fans down South. If they are going to replay the AFL in Sydney/Brisbane at 11.00pm then maybe they will show the NRL in Melbourne, Adelaide, etc., at the same time. That would be an improvement on the current 1.15am, 2.30am, etc timeslots.

BB, the news came to me via a mad bombers fan who was spitting chips and stated he thought the AFL had made a huge error by awarding the rights to the nine/ten/fox consortium. AFL had blanket coverage from seven and seven were promoting the game in the right light. We have all seen first hand what channel nine can do to a sport and with nine having a finger in more than a few pies, something has to give, and, from the looks of it, AFL will be the one to suffer in NSW and QLD.

BB, the article is in yesterdays SMH. I cant find a link on their site though. You may be able to find it. The main URL is www.smh.com.au.

The deal is Fox is not allowed to broadcast Friday night matches live in Sydney or Brisbane and the only coverage will be after 11pm on FTA. At present channel seven shows the games later than 11pm but C7 goes live at 7.30pm. This means AFL fans are losing out big time with no live matches on a Friday night. Nine has said they will not be scheduling any Swans or Lions matches on Friday nights so from their lofty position, only a few will be affected. This just keeps getting better. In my office, most people follow AFL but only a minority follow the Swans and no one follows the Lions. The majority of support is for Essesndon, Carlton and Collingwood. Also, the guys from my work regularly go to a sports bar after work to watch the AFL and League. Guess they can only watch League now.

Legend,
What you are saying now is quite different to your original point. I don't see there has been much of a backflip.
All that has happened is that Pay TV will not carry any AFL in Sydney and Brisbane on Friday nights. That is a loss for the AFL and your friends (bit of a worry isn't it that so many of our workmates follow AFL) But it is balanced by it being on prime time free to air TV in both cities on Saturday nights. That's a huge gain, especially if you want to grow your market
AFL already gets better TV audiences in Melbourne (and other cities in its homeland) than League does in Sydney, etc.. League will only be shown on prime time free to air TV in two states while the AFL will have at least some Australia wide coverage. The gap will just widen.
More importantly the AFL gets much, much, much more cash for its deal than does League.
I don't think that they are all that unhappy. I wish the NRL could do that well.
Cheers
