TWO new Brisbane teams

An 18th team is needed so they can have 2 conferences.

If they expand to 20 teams they can have 4 groups/Divisions of 5 teams - Play each team once and teams in your own group a second time

4 Groups would look like the following -either a 8 or 10 team finals series - if 10 team - top 2 teams in each group advance to the finals - 3rd place teams in each group play off for last two finals places - 9th and 10th

Group 1
Roosters
Souths
Storm
Dragons
Sharks

Group 2
Parra
Penrith
Wests Tigers
Bulldogs
NZ Warriors

Group 3
Cowboys
Broncos
Dolphins
Titans
Another QLD team

Group 4
Knights
Manly
Central Coast
Raiders
Perth

You’d get nothing but whinging from the media about how a team in a weak group got in whilst a good team ina strong group missed out!

I’ve always hated the conference concept, but I don’t mind this direction, the conferences seem better balanced than anything else I’ve seen before, and the finals concept is intriguing. My biggest issue here is Central Coast coming in- would love to see some real expansion for #20, but I get how the keep your Groups fairly balanced.

I've said before, conferences need to be split geographically, by spliting sydney in half north of homebush in one, south of homebush in the other, its the fairest split that can be done,
North conference
Cows, bronx, dolphins, titans, knights, manly, tigers, panthers, eels
South conference
Rabbits, sharks, roosters, dogs, dragons, warriors, raiders, storm
Then add perth, Adelaide, Nz2 or whoever etc to these

Its better than Gus's idea of having a Sydney and non Sydney conference.

Why?
What is the benefit of these conferences?

Arguably it might make it more interesting in second half of year re play off spots and staying in with a chance. Also scheduling two games every year against rivals And building stronger rivallary in your conference. I don’t mind it but dont think it’s necessary until we go to twenty teams.

You can schedule double up games against rivals under the current system. Not sure how it would be more exciting - there would still be the same amount of teams and can and can't make finals. There is simply no need for conferences. It would be lame.

It would be possible for clubs that might otherwise not be in p,ay off contention to have a shot of their conference isnt as strong as the other one, especially when we get to 20 clubs.if you have an 8 team play off there could be a lot of clubs whose seasons might be over mid way Through. It also adds a lot more value, therefore rivalry against your group clubs as every game is a 4 pointer in effect,
Agree re rivalry fixtures yet doesn’t seem to be in nrl’s thinking in current format.
it might not be necessary but it might add something different, rugby leagues never been afraid to innovate.

Let’s say we use the groups suggested and last years results

Group 1
Storm 44
Souths 42

Roosters 34
Sharks 22
Dragons 18

Group 2
Penrith 44
Parra 32

Wests Tigers 18
NZ Warriors 18
Bulldogs 8

Group 3
Titans 22
Cowboys 16

Broncos 16
Dolphins -
Another QLD team -

Group 4
Manly 34
Knights 26

Raiders 22
Perth-
Central Coast -

or if a ten team play-off where last two where wildcards you’d add in roosters and raiders.

To have clubs in finals contention that are otherwise not good enough to be in finals contention is a negative aspect of conferences, not a positive one.

Wildcards exist to make sure teams whom are good enough for the finals get a chance. It's an inevitable outcome of conferences that some will be stronger than others, and there're always unlucky teams whom happen to fall into the conference of death whom would almost certainly make the finals if they were in one of the other conferences.

How to you define which clubs should or should not be in finals contention anyway? It seems to me that no matter what the finals system was that there'd be people saying that the weaker teams in that system aren't as competitive and therefore don't deserve to be there.
