U16 Euro Cup

Serbian Rugby League official photographer is a pro and also former rugby player so he knows how to shoot and what to shoot.

Talking about Euro Celts national configuration, there are mostly Welsh, one Irish boy (who flew to Serbia by himself and is delighted with Serbian fast food bbq specialities), 3 Czechs (very good second-rower Buben - long-haired boy from the first photo, interchanges Hora and Smisek) and 4 Serbs (the boys with "ic" at the end of their surname).

U16s European Nations Cup - Belgrade 2007

Round 2 (29th June):

Pool A - England 46-0 Serbia
tries: Donaldson 3, Seeds, Olstrum, McNally, Sewell, Fitzsimmons (ENG)
goals: McNally 7/8 (ENG)
sent-off: Kranjcec (SRB) 37th munte
Man of the Match: James Donaldson (ENG)

Pool B - France 40-6 Euro Celts
tries: Escare 2, Pages, Soubreyas 2, Pelissier 2, Nuroy (FRA), Brown (EUR)
goals: Gigot 2/5, Garreta 1/1, Pages 1/1, Escare 0/1 (FRA), Murray 1/1 (EUR)
sent-off: Rieux (FRA) 42nd minute
Man of the Match: Clement Soubreyas (FRA)

Standings after Round 2
Pool A
1 - England 1-0-0 46-0 2
2 - Serbia 1-0-1 22-56 2
3 - Russia 0-0-1 10-22 0

Pool B
1 - France 1-0-0 40-6 2
2 - Euro Celts 1-0-1 32-54 2
3 - Scotland 0-0-1 14-26 0

Round 3 (1st July)
Pool A - Russia v England
Pool B - Scotland v France

English boys are from one Whitehaven school, which won their school competition (over 1000 schoools took part in this, the most massive RL competition in the world, but they came to Belgrade without their six best players who have contracts with pro clubs already), so the obvious final match v France will be the cream of this great competition. French boys showed today very good technique and handling skills with a lot of running and off-loads, no-looking passes, etc. Euro Celts and Serbs were obviously too tired to confront the favorites more competitive, but they have 4 days before their likely 3rd place playoff match on Tuesday. Russians and Scots watch their next opponents and they must do much more than on first match day to try to upset England and France. RLEF awarded the four men of the matches from the first two match days with appropriate medals and will do that till the end of tournament.

Pictures from Serbia v England game to follow, but I think that our photographer didn't manage to be on the pitch for the EUR v FRA match due to his job obligations.

The question remains as always in these Euro tournaments, who is playing for England? Have they sent an ammatuer team, or the best possible England under 16 team with players aligned to the top clubs?

The England team is Whitehaven School under 16 which is good thinking by the organisers imo, and a reward for Whitehaven's good season.

The official England u16 played 2 tests against France in April

16 year old boys learn very quickly.
They only have to see something done a few times and suddenly they can do it too.
The Serbian boys will be doing new things after just one game against England. It would be nice if all the emerging teams could play both England and France - they would improve with the experience.

Spot on roopy. One thing that can't be bought is experience.

Ok, good to find out who is playing for England. It gives us a better indicator as to where the other teams are at. So, I would also like to know who is playing for France? Are they at full strength?

One of my old pro clubs and even though I am living in Holland I still have strong contacts back home...........

Mmmmmm ..............maybe a bit of gamesmanship being played here.

WHITEHAVEN School’s all-conquering Year 11 youngsters have been handed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent England in the European Federation Under-16 championship in Serbia. They have been given the honour in recognition of taking the Carnegie Champion School’s title in Leeds in March, when they beat last year’s Year 10 champs Malet Lambert of Hull 24-22 in the final.

Good luck on the tournament but when you get a Euro Celts team and ONE school team playing in a six team International Flagship event, and Serbia in their first outing beating an established nation like Russia (who held the last under 16 championship) then we have a long long way to go.

Serbia by the way Jovan must have played their socks off to beat Russia and a massive credit to what you achieved.

France for the tittle based on the English being a school side.

The English have indeed sent a school side - but it is their champion school side. Also, a group of players used to playing together can be a big advantage.

The comparison should perhaps be with Ice Hockey - the Canadians for many years sent their champion Junior side to the World Championships (and they usually won it!)

I take a lot of Yanto's criticism on board - but he knows all too well that trying to force these things can be very expensive and counter-productive. For instance they might have found a full Czech team - and the Welsh might have funded a full team. But in the long run isn't it a good idea to have the best three Czech youngsters playing with the Welsh lads. When they take their experience and what they have learned back home it can only be good for a very fledgling nation.

I'll add my congratulations to the Serbians for running the tournament and for their great win over the Russians.

First, thank you on best wishes!
Second, how many players from clubs playing Dutch RL championship did Holland have when they, for example, beat Serbia three times? (My opinion is that ONE school that we are talking about would give a lot more players for England U16s, even if they wanted mixed-club national team, then the answer on this question)
Third, do you want to say that Serbia is not established RL nation and, being unestablished, has no rights to beat Russia?
Four, do you think that French boys don't go to school?

I thought before tournament that France and, maybe Russia, are going to be favourites, but when watched the both France (v Euro Celts) and England (v Serbia) must say that we are going to have much tougher encounter in gold medal match then last year in U19s final.

the reason why Wales joined with the Czech team is because its a North Wales team....they decided becasue there competition was running in the South, they would use North Wales players in stead!! So they are developing there north wales juniors

The England France game sounds like a corker - England winning on a penalty gaol after being behind all game and three french boys sin binned.

Sounds like a great day of footy. all three games sound like they kept the crowd on the edge of their seats.
