CANADA DEFEATS AUSTRALIA TO WIN BRONZE AT U21 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
(Mar del Plato, Argentina) Making their first-ever appearance at the U21 World Championship, Canada finished third in the World after defeating Australia, 79-74, today in the Bronze Medal match. The game completed an outstanding tournament for Canada, who had lost their semi-final match to Greece, 74-61, after upsetting the USA 93-90 in overtime in Fridays quarterfinal action.
The win also marked the first time a Canadian age-group team has medaled at a FIBA World Championship event.
Obviously, it was a great game because we won, stated Canadian Head Coach Dave Crook. Australia has had a spectacular performance in this tournament, but today we defeated them. I always believed in our players, in their skills and their quality.
The game started as a hard-fought affair, with Canada leading, 22-20, at the end of 10 minutes. Canadas two-point advantage was cut in half at the end of two quarters however, as Australia outscored Canada 20-19 in the period leaving the Canadians with a 41-40 lead at halftime. Andy Rautins of Syracuse, New York, went three-of-five from three-point range in the fist half, while Vancouver native, Levon Kendall, was dominating in the paint. Rautins would go on to finish the game with 11 points. Kendall finished with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds.
Canada won the game in the third quarter, outscoring Australia 22-16. Vlad Kuljanin of Toronto made his presence felt underneath the basket on both ends of the floor. He would finish the game with a team-high 10 rebounds and 12 points (second on the team).
Australia attempted to mount a comeback in the final quarter, outscoring Canada 18-16, but they could not overcome the third quarter deficit.
We faced Australia many times and we knew that they are a tough rival, Kendall. Today we won because we played with energy and courage.
Brad Newley scored a game-high 17 points for Australia.
Canada had lost to Australia in the qualifying round of the World Championship earlier this week, after defeating them twice in July, including the championship game, at the Jack Donohue International Classic in Mississauga, Ontario.
