Australia has gone through the pool rounds undefeated. The only other undefeated team is in the opposing pool B (USA). It's a shame these games aren't on TV.

Thankyou Canada for beating and eliminating the USA in their quarter final, because after Australia today knocked over the Euro champs Slovenia (who nearly beat the USA) we're looking a strong chance for gold.

Australian basketball on the up

Has been for a few years now mate. We've won this tournament in 1997 and we also won the U19 version that most of these current guys were a part of.

The 1997 comp didn't do much for us as we missed out on the world champs a few years ago.

No the 1997 comp did a great deal for us as it gave us our current crop of senior stars. It was the old guard who failed at the World Champs along with the coaching staff.

Right now Australian basketball has never been stronger as the crop coming through are world class with a number of NBA prospects.

Back to the point of the thread though, Australia has lost its semi-final to Lithuania. It was gone from the first quarter with the Lithuanians jumping out of the blocks much faster.

CANADA DEFEATS AUSTRALIA TO WIN BRONZE AT U21 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

(Mar del Plato, Argentina) Making their first-ever appearance at the U21 World Championship, Canada finished third in the World after defeating Australia, 79-74, today in the Bronze Medal match. The game completed an outstanding tournament for Canada, who had lost their semi-final match to Greece, 74-61, after upsetting the USA 93-90 in overtime in Friday’s quarterfinal action.

The win also marked the first time a Canadian age-group team has medaled at a FIBA World Championship event.

“Obviously, it was a great game because we won,” stated Canadian Head Coach Dave Crook. “Australia has had a spectacular performance in this tournament, but today we defeated them. I always believed in our players, in their skills and their quality.”

The game started as a hard-fought affair, with Canada leading, 22-20, at the end of 10 minutes. Canada’s two-point advantage was cut in half at the end of two quarters however, as Australia outscored Canada 20-19 in the period leaving the Canadians with a 41-40 lead at halftime. Andy Rautins of Syracuse, New York, went three-of-five from three-point range in the fist half, while Vancouver native, Levon Kendall, was dominating in the paint. Rautins would go on to finish the game with 11 points. Kendall finished with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds.

Canada won the game in the third quarter, outscoring Australia 22-16. Vlad Kuljanin of Toronto made his presence felt underneath the basket on both ends of the floor. He would finish the game with a team-high 10 rebounds and 12 points (second on the team).

Australia attempted to mount a comeback in the final quarter, outscoring Canada 18-16, but they could not overcome the third quarter deficit.

“We faced Australia many times and we knew that they are a tough rival,” Kendall. “Today we won because we played with energy and courage.”

Brad Newley scored a game-high 17 points for Australia.

Canada had lost to Australia in the qualifying round of the World Championship earlier this week, after defeating them twice in July, including the championship game, at the Jack Donohue International Classic in Mississauga, Ontario.
