Unfair on Witt

We need to sort out our halves and fast.

IMO, Smith was being awfully unfair to Witt last night. He's 19 y.o., just finding his feet in first grade again, coming off a two week break, playing in a position he has barely played all year and by playing Wags at five-eighth, Smith put the entire responsibility for organising the team on Witt. He handled it reasonably well in the first half when our forwards were on top, but he's not got the experience to take the team by control when things arne't going well...

If Dykes isn't in the team, Morris has to play in the halves. I can't understand why if Morris is being considered a five-eighth next year, that we refuse to consider him in that position when we're short in halves.

I remain as convinced as ever that Witt is not going to make it as a half back. He just doesn't have the natural ability to take charge of a team. I still think he can be an NRL five-eighth, especially as he body matures. But I think Morris definitely should have played half tonight, Witt at five-eighth and then Hopkins/Webster hooker combination.

All this makes me awfully worried about next year. I don't care what it would have taken to get Orford we should have paid it. It doesn't matter who else you have in your team, if you don't have one rep quality half in your team, you can't win a premiership.

I dont think Witt can organise or lead the team, its just not in his game.

You are spot on in regards to Not winning a premiership. We will never win a premiership without a good half back, Never. And its a real shame to the other talented players in the team such as Hindmarsh because he puts in every game but no avail. All we needed last night was for Witt to direct us around the park and we would of won but he did not even hardly touch the ball in the 2nd half, sorry but he is not a half back.

Micahel CAN do these things - he just has to believe in himself!!!

If you notice Orford or Lockyer play - they get the ball off the ruck 4 or 5 times every 6 tackles.

Witty gets the ball once if hes lucky.

He just has to say - bugger it !! This is my team and Im gonna direct them around and get up them if they dont do what I want!

If he hasnt got this - we need to find a player that can do it !!!

The halfback spot is the MOST critical spot we need to work on for next year.. Stop mucking around and get a talker and a thinker in there!!!

I dont understand Smith. Dykes was dally m in 2001 for best 5/8 but however he plays halfback. He does impress me more than Witt has but i saying this he has recieved a lottttt more game time. I think the only positive thing to do is name dykes at 5/8 and Witt at half. When everybody was calling for Parra to get rid of WAgon and we did with 6-dykes and 7-thorman we got smashed howvere i see Witt and dykes/morris a more reliable halves combination.

he doesnt get enough ball count the amount of times finch touches the ball compared to witt.... i think it comes down do confidence

he's also only 19? he is doing well for a young half back keep him there for rest of year...

joe williams for souths is just making his name at 21 heads 22 same as finch so he still is playing well for his age who could be still playing flegg

Witt is 20 now for the record. I don't mind moving Morris to 5'8th, but who do we use at hooker? James Webster isn't up to NRL standard unfortunately. I'd like to see a Dykes Witt half combination soon hopefully.

I think 6. Witt. 7. Dykes 9. Morris is the best combination we have if they are all available. There is no doubt Witt has talent but like I said in my original post it really was asking a lot of him last night. Let's hope Dykes is back ASAP. And if we're going to not move Morris back to five.eight lets go 7. Thorman or Smith. Wags at five-eighth may work ok outside someonel like Dykes but its never going to work outside someone with limited experience like ... well everybody else..

Good cll cyclops. I was a Witt critic after last night, but at 20, leading a side around with internationals in it isa big ask.

Short term - we need a halfback who is capable of doing just that. Remember that Smithy has never (since Noel Goldthorpe) allows a halfback to be comfortable. That's why Dykes is a far better option. However, young blokes learn off older blokes. If Witt is going to be chief plamaker one day, he needs an old head to learn off. Brett Finch, not a leading playmaker in his own right, had a tantative season beside Fittler. Generous Smith gives Witt humpteen different half partners, and the constant threat of reserve grade!

Long term: Witt could develop into a fine halfback. If only friggin Smith could get something right for once!

maybe experiment with Witty in the centers (use his speed, im still assuming he is still quick as he was 6 yrs ago), it worked quite a few times in under 13's/14's for Newtown in toowoomba,
