Now that the ARU has thrown down the gauntlet by saying that they will raid League to prop up players for the fourth Aussie Super 12 team, I think that the League has to fight back....
If a player is currently playing Super 12 standard as a minimum, and they have been involved with Union say for the previous three years, then I think that League clubs should be able to throw some money at these guys in retaliation to the Union poaching our players.
I propose that this money should not count towards the League clubs salary cup, say for the first two years of the players NRL contract where;
1. The player is a current Super 12 player - ie a star of their game. The Union types are only going to go after our big names, so we should do the same, and it also stops NRL teams signing large numbers of up and coming Rugby players and not having this expense count towards the cap.
2.The player needs to have been playing Union for the previous three years ( not necessarily at Super 12 level). This will stop the likes of Nathan Blacklock going to Union for one year and then returning to league salary cap free.
We need to be able to fight back somehow against Union, whilst somehow still maintaining the integrity of our salary cap.
