THE United States are to host a Queensland Indigenous side in Honolulu on October 27, Far & Wide can reveal.
The clash will take place a week after the Tomahawks play the Melbourne Storm at PPL Park in Philadelphia and will continue the Americans’ build-up to the 2013 World Cup.
Steve Johnson, the Queensland-based team manager for the US national team, says the team touring team will be picked following an Aboriginal carnival in Sydney on NRL grand final weekend.
“The carnival is a great thing and the chance to make this team just adds to it,” he said,
“Every participant has to do a health check and last year they found 12 boys with diabetes.
“It’s sponsored by the Australian Electoral Commission and last year they registered more people to vote than they would by spending time on an electoral drive out in outback Queensland.”
The Queensland side won’t feature any NRL stars but some former first graders, like ex-Broncos Ian Lacey, are expected to push for inclusion.
So far, there has been no formal confirmation of the Tomahawks’ proposed match in France in late October or early January.
.
LAST week we reported that Super League and NRL clubs were not taking seriously the bid by US conglomerate Premier Sports Group to host the World Club Challenge.
But Premier is still working on a business plan, which it intends to present to the Rugby League International Federation.
The problem is, the RLIF does not run the WCC, Super League and the NRL do. It would seem they are presenting their business plan to the wrong people.
.
LOOK out for an amateur Four Nations later this month. On July 21, Scotland A plays English Lions and Ireland A takes on Wales A. No dates yet for the professional Tri-Nations set down for Octover and November involving England, France and Wales.
