USB devices for digital TV

These things are being advertised/labelled as 'watch TV anywhere with your laptop'. Do the newer ones still need a proper TV antenna - I can't see how they do away with this.

If they worked without needing the antenna then $80 is a steal. Do they work with any sort of portable antenna?

I had one in England a few years ago (where digital/freeview TV was already established), for about the same price.

They come with a small plastic standing stick antenna (about the same size as the USB unit), but it works much better/clearer when you plug in a cable from the real antenna at home.
