From Fox Sports;
Vagana to contest grading
April 14, 2004
CRONULLA recruit Nigel Vagana will front the National Rugby League judiciary tonight to contest the grading of his careless high tackle.
Vagana: to contest severity of the charge
Vagana was slapped with a grade two charge for a second half hit on North Queensland's Matt Sing in the Sharks' upset 36-10 home loss to the Cowboys last Saturday.
The match marked ex-Bulldogs centre Vagana's debut for Cronulla after overcoming off-season shoulder surgery but was overshadowed by yet another disappointing Sharks effort.
Under a grade two charge Vagana will be suspended for a week with an early plea or if found guilty.
Vagana missed the first four rounds due to injury and the Sharks can't afford to lose him for another week after slumping to the bottom of the NRL ladder with a 1-4 win-loss record.
The Sharks have also been reeling from the 10-week suspension of young pivot Greg Bird for kneeing Souths' Shane Marteene in the head.
Bird was fined $15,000 last night by the Sharks board with $12,000 suspended until the end of the year.
Bird, 20, has pledged to spend his time out of the game doing community and development work throughout the Shire.
Meanwhile, Eels pivot Daniel Wagon will be out for one week after lodging an early guilty plea for a grade four careless high tackle charge stemming from Parramatta's 41-20 win over Souths on the weekend.
Wagon could have been out for a fortnight if found guilty for a third minute tackle that broke Souths prop Luke Stuart's nose.
And New Zealand Warriors fullback Brent Webb has also lodged an early plea for a grade one careless high tackle charge from their 34-20 weekend loss to Newcastle.
He will not miss a match.
