Pink Floyd founder and resident nutter Syd Barrett has died at home.

If you dont know he was.
He was "the crazy diamond " in the song "shine on you crazy diamond" off the "Wish you were here "album.

He left the band before they went all stadium prog rock concept albumish.
He had a mental breakdown ....LSD had a bit to do with it.

very sad.

I would of been more than interested to see what direction they would of taken had Syd stayed on..would "Dark side" had been made at all??

doubt it.

Syd wrote songs about a bloke who stole people undies of the line..
Roger Waters wrote about madness.

Pretty similar I suppose. :)

Lunatic was also written about him..and that came from Dark side album..than the question is would the "wall" have been written??? that would have to be regarded as their first bonefide "rock" album

A very sad day for the music world. Although he left the band in 1968, he was regarded as a musical genius, credited with founding psychadelia, and was an inspiration for many. His two solo albums, 'The Madcap Laughs' and 'Barrett', both released in 1970, are classics, while his early work with Pink Floyd and his legacy in their later work, I'm sure will endure.

How ironic that his passing coincided with the long awaited DVD release of the 1994 "Pulse" concert.

Rest in Peace Syd.

I only just heard. Very sad indeed, although I'm surprised he made it to 60 to be honest.

Shine on you crazy diamond.

Have you bought Pulse yet Carch ? I was thinking of getting it to add to by Floyd DVD collection. I never bought it on CD prefering the original versions, but DG Live in Concert has convinced me that any Floyd is good Floyd, I'll probably get Waters Wall in Berlin concert too.

According to legend, his retreat began the day he quit his London flat and walked all the way to Cambridge in bare feet. He boarded up the windows of his mother's basement and reverted to his real name, Roger.

LSD does that to people.

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

yes very sad the old nutter has gone

however

it was great that he was sacked by pink floyd so as the emergence of david gilmour would provide the world wit one of the most enduring and popular sounds in the history of music

gilmour is a far greater impact on music than syd would ever have been

to paraphrase Barney Gumble in Pukahontis "Dont cry for Syd, he was already dead".

Syd going mad provided the basis for most of Floyd's subject matter in the 70's, he was almost like a 5th member the whole time.

RIP - Syd.
