Vella - a Centre ?

Finally - great to see Michael playing a good game.
BUT why doesnt he run flat out on the fringes like that every game.

Last night he ran through Amos Roberts and my mates and I were saying .. great run but why shouldnt he be able to beat Amos Roberts head on every tackle ? Look at vellas size to the size of Amos Roberts!

How about this from completely left field (and heres me complaining about Smith not playing people in their positions !!!) why cant Vella play in the centres????

Reasons -
1. he played fullback and winger in his junior days so knows the positions
2. he is fast enough for a centre - he would have to be faster than Junior Langi !
3. Being the strongest man at Parra - can you imagine him in the centres against smaller players esp close to the tryline ?
4. He runs straight and hard
5. his defence is good
6. we have nothing to lose.

Before you all dismiss this as out and out lunacy ... give me the negitives!!!

Reasons Against:
1. He is no where near fit enough to last 80 mins - even in the backs
2. With our current injuries, we'd be left a bit light on in the forwards
3. His speed is good once he gets going, but I still think fast centres may get past him with a burst of speed off the mark

Strider - good points but

1. Fit enough ? surely if you can play front row and get smashed and back up you can play in the backs .. conversely you could say Junior Langi couldnt play in the forwards cause he isnt fit enough !

2. You are right but Armit and a few other PL forwards ?

3. yes you may be right but .... he HAS to be faster even off the mark than Junior (and Im not knocking Junior who I think has played quite well in the last couple of games)
I think you will find that over 20 metres Vell ais one of the fastest at the club. No with his size and the very fact he runs straight and hard and doesnt muck around... uncontainable !

He has bulked up a bit, and played strong in most games this year, especially when most of ourprops were unavailable eg Cannings, Peek, Pearson
Considereing half our pack, has been out most of the year, Vella has been needed up front.
Maybe when cayless and cannings get back, Vella can be used from the interchange as an impact player ? Wouldnt mind seeing him used in some attacking phases out wide.

Vella's defence is good however his lateral defence which is more important on the flanks than in the middle of tghe field is atrocious. An impact player running wide off the five eight - great idea but starting him at centre........ :?

Watch Phil Bailey against Gasiner earlier in the year. Bailey has played back row since.
Vella would be no match for a light footed centre.

Because we have enough good young forwards to fill that void. We currently have no defence in the centres.

I'd like to see a big shake up against the Warriors.
1. Wade McKinnon
2. Brett Anderson / Eric Grothe / Ben Smith
3. Nathan Hindmarsh
4. Daniel Wagon
5. Luke Burt

6. John Morris
7. Chris Thorman / Tim Smith

8. Josh Cordoba
9. James Webster
10 Michael Vella
11. Jim Curtis
12. Craig Stapleton
13. Feleti Mateo

14. Mal Kaufusi
15. Jack Afamasaga
16. Shane Muspratt / Dean Widders
17. Hauraki

We currently have two or three forwards taking the ball to the line for the whole game and a few that join in when they feel like it. When these blokes have to have a rest then these "good young forwards" need to step up.

Ross and Pritchard were the ones that changed the game around for Penrith whereas our bench did stuff all and handed it back to them. On the back of their go-forward Roberts was able to put on the pressure in attack.

If the "good young forwards" stand up and do their job we don't see holes appear in the backline defence.

Hindmarsh in the centres is the stupidest decision ever. Why move the comp's best 2nd rower to a position where he's not going to get that much football.
