Japan would be far better suited playing RL than RU...but given the next union wc is in japan they are going to spend millions "locking up" japan

We've no chance of gaining a foothold imo

Rugby union is the sport of choice for Corporate Japan, all the teams are owned by big companies and heavily subsidised.

The players are effectively employees of the companies. Whether or not the World Cup is a success does not matter.

SE Asia region looks more promising - Philippines, Thailand both showing some enthusiasm. That said, doesn't mean we should give up on Japan

It's hard to imagine those corporations are making any money of the thing. Just how much easier would it be for any sport, not just league, to establish itself with that sort of network support?

The sport was established first, it was taken up by one of the Royal Family and became fashionable.

That led to corporate interest, the big companies are not in it to make money, they are in it for pride, or prestige, or just to follow the rest of the herd. Japanese culture has always been based to some extent of being part of a group.
