When was the last time anyone here can remember a ref giving a penalty for one of these?

It has to be well over a decade imo, yet you see every team do it a couple of times a match each week.

Does it exist any more?

If they weren't going to penalise Nightingale's one on Thursday they never will. He dived back into the field of play like he was scoring a try and then just waited for a hand to be laid on him.

I remember Farrell having one last night that could've easily been penalised as well but they just don't seem to do it anymore.

I cant remember if was the Sharks fullback or Tigers fullback just run and dive at the goal line. Oh wait, might have been Nightingale for the Dragons.
Deadset, if thats not voluntary then I dont know what is!

Nightingales wasn't a voluntary tackle because that idiot knights player was already touching him before he had even stopped sliding from that dive into the field of play

The referee should have called surrender and allowed the Knights player to hold him down for longer in that case.

They changed the rules specifically so that players could dive out of the ingoal like nightingale did

:edit: found the rule -

SPEARING OUT OF OWN IN-GOAL
1. If the ball carrier spears out of his own in goal the referee will identify the tackle as a surrender tackle.
2. Call on the ball carrier to get to his feet and continue his run. If the player fails to do so the referee will adjudicate a voluntary tackle.
3. Allow the defending team to place their hand or dive on the ball carrier constituting a tackle has been made.
NOTE: the defending player/s cannot lift or drag the ball carrier back into the in-goal

Defenders have just got to be smarter and not touch a player who has dived in front of them. Force him to get up then smash him back into the ingoal.

Cant remember what game it was but Luke Burt cowered in front of defenders in a fetal position for a solid 15 seconds before someone laid a hand on him last year in what can only be described as a "INCREDIBLE EMBARRASSMENT"

Given the rule states that a player can be "dived" on then defenders just need to be going in and smashing anyone stupid enough to just lay there. Might stop them doing it if they get a few shots to the ribs!

Oh God can you imagine how many people would be called "grubs" by the grub-obsessed folk on here if that happened? They'd want the rule changed and anyone who did it publically executed.
