Why would they invite 4 clubs in to send them broke.
They didn't care if they survived or not. All they cared about was keeping the status quo in Sydney. Only a biased New South Welshman who has their head buried in the sand cannot understand that the way Arthurson and Quayle went about expansion and how they favoured Sydney teams between 1995 until 1998 set the game back 30 years.

Do you think it was fair or ethical to make the four expansion clubs pay the travel and accommodation of all visiting teams across ARL and reserve grade?

Do you think it's a smart way of introducing an expansion team?

AwFuL don't do it because it's a recipe for disaster. It's why their expansion teams didn't fall over.

but where is the club in perth putting fwd their bid to join the ranks of 1st grade .. they are are all seperate entities, and we as fans look to the media to hear what their plans are, but in reality fans expect the NRL to implement a team there.. and thats just not going to happen, you already need to be a club, running a rugby league team, then these folks at the arlc will hand you a license, they are not looking to set you up in a foregn market, coz if it fails its on them, but if you as a bidder have an already established club in Fremantle called perth pumas, and are boasting however many juniors etc they'll look at that moreso
lol, that’s some dumb sht right there! You think a perth club would be stronger if it was an existing nrlwa club promoted rather than a club appealing to the whole whole state, being fed jnrs nt the whole state and run by squillionaires? Doh!

sure that wasn’t their intention. maybe it was the only way to get existing clubs to agree, maybe they thought the new clubs could afford it, maybe they were dumb as dogsht when they added a third side to the expense bill at the 11th hour. Who knows? Would make for an interesting question to those involved though.

It would end up being the club for the whole state or region by default, similar to dolphins being a club for its northern corridor region

The West Coast Pirates tick all the boxes laid out by the NSWRL loyalists on here. They are a club that has existed for years and fielded a team in the NSW SG Ball competition prior to COVID-19. They have all of WA to recruit players. No need to saddle up with the Bears.

Also one that wouldn't be able to compete with the bottom teams of the 1st grade competition, and gets belted 70 nil almost every game at SG ball level..
Yes they fit the bill, just aren't as competetive compared to the likes of NS bears or PNG hunters

Time for Nth Qld, Broncos, Titans, Redcliffe, Storm and Warriors to form a breakaway league and invite Ipswich, Easts-Brisbane, Wynnum, Perth, Adelaide, Hunters and NZ2 to join
hahah i bet it would f**king trounce the sydney comp in all metrics.

The best wa kids go east, its run on a oily rag and the kids travel, alot. Yet we’re still producing nrl players. Some people, always look for the worst in a situation.

Im not looking for a worst case scenario for Perth not to get a team, im saying whats currently there is not upto the standard of the lower grade clubs on the east coast, thats not to say that it wont get better... its just me saying top down approach is the only way you'll be getting a license in Perth any time soon... that means the pirates are not getting in, not now, not soon, and if the ns bears or easts tigers, or whoever else is willing to plonk themselves on the west coast to represent perth is the best chance at getting the next license then thats the top down approach that will strengthen the current pirates crop, thats a win, but it will be at the expense of perths own identity, personally i want perth to be in the NRL, but it cant be half arsed, you might have backers, and crowds willing to turn up, but if you're not competitive that won't last, and kids will continue to travel east regardless whether perth gives them the opportunity or not... have to get used to that

No but you are suggesting that our Pirates kids arent competitive in SG Ball and that somehow this means we cant produce talent and need an East coast team to move here. That's nonsense for the reasons I've stated. With a direct pathway we arent losing our best kids at 15-18 to East coast clubs like we are now, the U18's get much better coaching and training and increased RL presence and opportunity attracts kids to RL instead of Union. To suggest we should plonk an east coast team here because our current SG ball sides arent competitive in arguably the toughest U18's RL comp in the world is rubbish.

A east coast club plonked here will fail guaranteed off the field, so there's your argument out the window! It wont get the fans behind it and it wont get the corporate world behind it. It has to be a WA club to have any chance of success off the field.

On the field, well that's a different matter and will come down to development, recruitment, coaching appointments and resources. You know pretty much like very club in the NRL! Some clubs are lucky enough to be based in large RL playing areas, some have to find alternative ways of developing competitive sides. Given the two most successful teams in the last decade haven't had strong jnr pathways in their own regions, and some of the weakest have big jnr regions, I'm not sure its that big a problem tbh, and WA's is bigger locally than either of the two successful clubs already before we get a team. All it needs is a decent pathways partnership with a second tier club in RL heartland and bingo. In fact with WA, PNG and someone like Brisbane Tigers as a pathways system Id suggest we could be a powerhouse for development in same way Storm are. but with more local Jnrs coming through. Our U15's are unbeaten in this weeks schoolboy state championships so far.

If anything the WC Pirates seems the strongest option, dependent on what financial backing Cummins can pull together for ownership. Direct linkage and investment to NRLWA, established (all be it small) WA sports brand, fans support and committed RL people behind it. If it can tick the financial security and investment box Id be going Pirates over anything else I've seen so far.

If Pirates tick the $ boxes for NRL then I reckon they should announce them ASAP, even if not as an NRL club, start funding them decent grant and improve the Sg Ball and get a NSW cup team in. Give them 3 years to develop on and off the field and then bring them in.

2023 NRL announce WC Pirates to enter NSW cup in 2024
2024 WC Pirates enter NSW cup and Sg Ball restart. Club gets a $3mill a year NRL grant to start development and marketing. WC Pirates memberships go on sale. WA Govt waves rental fees on HBF Park for club to play there. WA Govt announces new CofE funding for NRLWA and WC Pirates. NRLWA participation funding trebled, WC Pirates club takes over costs of SG Ball and elite academy.
2026 Yr 3 in NSW cup NRL announces WC Pirates to enter NRL in 2028. Grant increased to $6mil a year so club can start recruiting good youngsters and develop off field operations. WA announces partnership programs with PNG and Brisbane Tigers.
2027 WC Pirates win NSW cup.
2028 WC Pirates enter NRL with an established membership base, good talented youngsters, new HQ and pathways system in place. NRL gives club cap concessions to sign players from outside NRL rosters.

That'd be nice and unusually strategic! $12-15mill NRL investment in start up 5 years to get it right and grow the game in WA. They earnt more than that from Origin here last week!
WA Govt can pay $15mill for another Origin, a Magic weekend and a Roos v Kiwis test to cover the NRLs WA investment costs. It ends up a cost neutral exercise for NRL to do it properly for a change.

So the Dolphins have a strong junior base and loads of money...... so why do they feel the need to snatch all the up-coming talent at other clubs like the Panthers? Or take almost half of the Melbourne starting forward pack? Its a far cry from what the Dolphins were saying pre-acceptance into the NRL that if an existing club fell over they were ready to step in. The Dolphins system is a joke at the moment.

ARL had Newcastle and the Crushers to keep it afloat
The Crushers?

They were sacrificed as part of the Broncos exclusivity deal when the NRL was formed.

The ARL had well-backed clubs aligned with it (Parra, Manly, Easts, Norths) but also traditional clubs (Souths, Balmain, Saints) with generations of support behind it. This was what Superleague lacked- if Bullfrog Moore hadn't steered Canterbury towards SL, Superleague wouldn't have got off the ground. It needed a traditional Sydney club like the Bulldogs to give it a sense of legitimacy.

Otherwise it would've essentially been a competition full of teams with not much history to their names (Broncos & Raiders had less than 20 years of existence) or new teams with no success whatsoever and virtually no time to have built up any real support (Adelaide, Perth, Hunter, Warriors). The reason the World Club Challenge was a failure is because who really cared? Superleague just felt like it was run for the Broncos benefit and the rest just made up the numbers.

Cutting/ merging a whole stack of traditional clubs won't grow the NRL- turning away your most loyal customers to try and attract new ones isn't growth. The AFL has been a success because of it's traditional clubs and their widespread following, not in spite of them.

Every major rugby league market in Australia and New Zealand was forced into abandoning their long-standing local competitions to field a team in the NSWRL. There's nothing special about Sydney that means it shouldn’t have to abide by the same rules they forced on everyone else. The sooky double standards NSWRL fans display is vomit inducing and very low brow.

If you think what I said is "absolute nonsense" then disprove it.

I can provide data on television ratings and attendances to support my position.

Can you?

If we're going by financials then are you able to name one Sydney club that is able to generate $25m pa from attendances, merchandise and sponsorship?

Without the $13m each Sydney club gets from the ARLC pa then they wouldn't be able to pay their players and cover the costs of running a football club. They're lucky to make $10m-$15m from attendances, merchandise and sponsorship. Most of the NSWRL clubs have been playing out of dilapidated grounds that are 50 to 75 years out of date, yet their fans like to think of themselves as being more sophisticated than everyone else. 😂
South’s and parra prob do

south’s have more members then the broncos
