Bears updated proposal

Proposal:
Reintroduce the Bears as the 18th commercially viable team and inject 220,000 avid fans and members back into the NRL, whilst also engaging with rural and regional heartland.

Summary:

The Bears national brand have a rich 113-year heritage and heartbeat following of die-hard Rugby League fans. A re-introduction into the NRL will engage the loyal club followers to invest their support back in the NRL after 20 years without a home team. Tribalism runs deep at North Sydney Oval with fans from Mt Isa to Wagga Wagga breathing red and black, with the chance to attract new fans nationwide. With such a strong brand and following, there will be obvious excitement for all Rugby League fans to hear the Bears aim to be in the NRL ranks once again.

This NRL goal has seen the structure of the club change, with the above model and astute group of people ready to deliver the NRL’s greatest story in the last 20 years. All the stakeholders have been considered and the time is now to bring all these passionate, loyal, and absolutely “tribal” fans on the journey.

Proposed on and off field season structure:

1. 24 games – 4-6 at NSO (grass roots tribalism), 12 games away and 6-8 games at regional destinations (Wagga, Tamworth, Dubbo, Coffs Harbour, Central Coast (as examples). The NRL to assist with direction to target large regional areas for Rugby League development.
2. Develop and initiate a clear program for country player pathways.
3. Marketing plan to target 220,000 avid Bears fans to attend games and get involved.
4. Media strategy to reintroduce well-known former playing legends to the Rugby League community.
5. Appointment of key social and cultural leader to shadow and guide players, whilst also having a strong presence in the public and player mentoring.
6. 2-4 players per year/per region to be awarded a scholarship to live in Sydney for 12 months and play football after school to further their Rugby League career.

Seriously lol

It’s so funny you want the bears back in but don’t want rugby league to do well against union in nz

I don't hate union or even afl (well it's an insular waste of time). It'd be nice if the NRL established a 2nd kiwi team & that probably will happen, but surpassing that country's national sport which is linked their identity & supported by many structures just is unlikely to happen.

If the people of nz choose to like league more it’s nothing to be ashamed of lol

every other sport has had a crack at league markets why shouldn’t league have a try too In theirs

i don’t think we are much chance against afl in wa or Adelaide but against union in nz … doable

This isn't new. They announced this plan months ago when they released the brand update, and have been discussing elements of it for years.

I guess you could say that this is currently their plan A, as delusional as it may seem. A joint venture (i.e. hostile takeover) in another market like Perth, Queensland, or NZ, is their plan B of sorts.

220,000 fans wow maybe the Bears should be based at Michigan Stadium.

Seriously where do they find these numbers, random number generators or something?
What’s the population of the north shore in sydney ? Cronulla on its own is 200k and the bears catchment is way bigger than Cronulla

220,000 avid Bears fans

Seriously?
In their last season they averaged 8,500 people at NSO and a lot of those people are no longer alive
I'm a Bears member and I couldn't tell you how they come up with that figure.

I can however guarantee that it's corporate nonsense and includes a lot of people that don't fit any meaningful definition of fan, and even more whom will never be active supporters of a Bears NRL side ever again (such as myself for example).

You know damn well that there's a big difference between a person that lives in a market and a fan, and they are pretty blatantly trying to spin that number as people whom will not only be fans in the loosest sense of the word but will become customers of the team and NRL should the Bears get a license, which is utterly delusional on face value.

..yeah but I don't write their bullshit press releases

Everything about that press release is bullshit. The idea or proposal is about a thousand times worse than the mendacious number of fans they came up with. Seriously, who would come up with this nomad arrangement and propose it with a straight face.

If we are being honest every market in Australia or New Zealand is eminently doable or conceivable. The only question is whether the markets etc are worth the effort.

I hope they stick with this plan of 6 games at bear park and the rest in regional areas. No one could rubber stamp that idea.

I’d say their catchment is at least 500k in Sydney imo

and most aren’t fans of other clubs

I am not arguing for this but if the bears wanted to play most of their games in north Sydney they could build a financially viable team that could compete with the rest of the nrl

2 games at nso will be enough to re engage lost fans and activate the north shore more

the return of the bears is going to be like the return of souths
