Well it was strategic in terms of keeping vlads bosses happy at news Ltd. If it was strategic for what is best for the nrl in Brisbane, well that’s very much open for discussion! The fact people are saying we need a Brisbane3 already would suggest probably not.

Maybe they had research on why reds & crushers failed & choose not to repeat mistake?! Maybe they got sick of having to takeover clubs backed by unnamed millionaires who always seem to cut & run?!

Please table ur data anytime??

Whichever bid gets up Perth fan numbers will be same for. How many bears fans a joint bid would create is the interesting one. If done right and if there really is lots of dormant bears fans out there it could be a decent amount. Added together we may have one of the biggest membership clubs from day one.

There's at least 6k hardcore fans in Perth..

Maybe, or maybe News ltd told him to accept the club that had the least potential to challenge the Broncos?
The fact that Dolphins are not based fulltime at Suncorp, are not appealing to the whole of Brisbane and have in effect led to the situation where we are already talking about needing Jets or Firehawks to come in asap should be enough to tell you that having a club that is far far north Brisbane with eyes on the sunshine coast is not a great response to needing Brisbane2 and filling suncorp every week. Hopefully they can at least be successful in their own right and not play too many games in 12k stadia!

He’s right Perth vs titans / cowboys etc will be a bit meh
Cowboys were among the top six most watched clubs when they were at the bottom of the ladder. When they were regularly in the finals they were the third most watched club. There are Sydney clubs who draw low ratings even when they're winning.

Magic round aside

The 5 biggest crowds this year

Broncs v Cows 37k
Dragons v Roosters 35k
Broncs v Souths 32k
Souths v Bulldogs 30k
Parra v WT 28k

WT, Dragons and Dogs are terrible. Yet still can draw a crowd mostly based on the name. If that can be created for the new teams

Dragons vs Roosters was the ANZAC Day game.

Rabbitohs vs Bulldogs was the Easter Friday game.

Eels vs Tigers was also a special event game played on Easter Monday.

Schedule these games during a regular round and they would be lucky to draw 18k.

How did Crushers go?
Or how did GC go across many different incarnations?

In 1995, there were four expansion clubs.
Auckland Warriors. North Queensland Cowboys. South Queensland Crushers. Western Reds.

Auckland averaged 26,450.
North Queensland averaged 21,670
South Queensland averaged 21,029
Western Reds averaged 13,390

The top six best attended clubs in 1995 were from outside of Sydney.

Gold Coast Chargers were the first team to be based on the Gold Coast and they were culled despite having money in the bank and making a profit in their final season. News Ltd wanted Broncos to be the sole team in SEQ. The Giants and Seagulls were based in Tweed Heads. Tweed Heads Seagulls are a traditional club dating back to 1908.

We know you hate Sydney clubs. Move on. It’s boring.

Slightly different circumstances but they were good early on. Had a whole state to choose from and had a very strong QRL backing.

How did Crushers go?
Or how did GC go across many different incarnations?

The last 2 teams let into AFL are last in most categories

Same for Western United and MacArthur in A League.

So if it is possible to link up with an existing brand then it is a good idea.
You hit the key point early in the post.

Nothing wrong with new brands, Titans have had plenty of other issues that hindered their progress. They wouldn’t have any more or less supporters today if they were Gold Coast Bears (Norths Merger or Burleigh promoted).

WA Bears might bring a few more Sydney based supporters than Pirates, nowhere near what the Bears would claim though. Being frank with the average age of supporters those numbers would start dropping significantly in the few decades. Don’t see many kids in Sydney getting behind WA Bears.

Do you think Suns & Giants would have been any more successful if they promoted/moved/merged with some VFL club with history?

I was responding to a poster who claimed the "brands" of six Sydney clubs produced big crowds. The reality is those games drew a crowd because they were played on Easter Friday, Easter Monday and ANZAC Day.

You're just pissed off because I used logic and data to bust the myth of Sydney brands having special drawing power.

It’s funny to see how far he goes sometimes
It's funny how bad boy buddy follows these threads so he can "Like" all posts that go ad hominem on me.

To people in NSW you mean. Likewise 80%+ of Sydney derbies are meh to anyone outside of Sydney and most of the people in Sydney who don’t support the clubs playing. Unless both teams are in form of course.

The point of expansion is to appeal to new fan bases.

Day one isn't the issue.
The novelty factor will last atleast a season.
After that if the team is terrible it might fall away...a heritage brand will help should it happen

One day I’m going to get you to admit your deep love for our Sydney clubs. They are the bedrock of the game. Without Sydney you would all be afl fans. Ponder that lol
