WA BEARS

To be honest, whoever he supports and what his motives might or might not be isn’t important, if what he is saying is correct.

The most important thing in all of this, is that an area without a team currently is given a team that is actually theirs not because it is seen as a way in to bring another Sydney/NSW side through the back door or by stealth. Now I don’t have anything against the Bears per se and I can see some of the positivity around bringing them back in (although how long term is that positive) but an area that might be strategically important like Perth or NZ 2 should not be seen as a secondary thing.

The only way this in any way works is if the NRL essentially states that they are not playing any more home games in Sydney and that is their condition of entry. The likelihood of that happening though is pretty slim
His club killed them off
He wants his clubs to take over their area which they never will. They don’t like manly there

Currently they have 1500 financial members (confirmed by the Bears CEO himself here)

That it no way justifies bringing a the team back to the NRL or having yet another game in the saturated Sydney market.
Well vlandys thinks the opposite

you can take him or go back to bosses who promise to expand then get rolled by the clubs

end of the day he’s added brisbane 2 and either Perth or nz2

man has done more for expansion since anybody since 95 and from a much weaker base then arko and Quayle had

It’s been over two decades since the Bears were last in the NRL. Their already small support base is dwindling away every year, you think the area is going to care about the Bears or their past with Manly at all in another 30-40 years if the status quo is maintained? It doesn’t matter who took their area, it should have been formally taken away from them and reallocated to other teams.

South Melbourne fans probably thought other clubs would never make inroads in their former territory when they were relocated. 40 years on and their neighbouring clubs in Richmond, Melbourne and St Kilda have hit over 100k members multiple times in Richmond’s case and 40k+ in the case of the other two. The Swans still sell a good number of memberships to the old diehards down there, but they’ve all but been forgotten as a Melbourne team by younger generations.

The Bears could be like the Swans if they go all in on Perth and relinquish any claims on Sydney territory and home games. That doesn’t seem to be their aim though, every bid includes talk of Sydney.

I’m not arguing that. The merger between the Bears and Manly was a stupid idea but anyway that is the past.

The point is though that any positives you could draw about bringing back the Bears would on the balance be taken away if Christchurch or Perth as an area were not probably considered. They really should be looking at this as a relocation that the Swans eventually did. The logo and colours will still be there which on the surface is better then not having a team in the competition at all

He has added a 2nd Brisbane team. The rest is talk, you don't get credit for something that hasn't happened yet.

I'm hoping to lay some pipe with the missus tonight, until it happens I'm not crowing about achieving anything.

TBF no one becomes a member of a reserve grade club. We keep being told there's a hundred thousand Bears fans out there, whittling that back to reality you'd hope there is 5-10k who would get behind a Bears club back in the NRL?

A club with maybe 10k supporters in Sydney is hardly screaming to be let back in.

It would be a bad move for any area to allow a team to play any of their home games at NSO. If it’s an away game, sure but the purpose of putting a side in a new area is to have it actually representing that area

Every team sells off home games.

Some rich businessmen in the North shore. If they cough up then why not

Generally they are in the same state though and they are in a region which doesn’t have already a team or indeed any exposure to the NRL.

In any case, if some rich businessman or men want to take a game to NSO why don’t they lean on one of the other 9 clubs in Sydney to take a home game against the Bears there. That seems a little palpable than taking a home game from a team based on the other side of the country.

He also gets a lot of decisions wrong. Accepting $100mill less from fox, ending up in court with nswrl, calling expansion areas a waste of money, getting rid of mid season tests, possibly redcliife as brisbane2 And so it goes on.

His admiration for some nostalgia around the bears could be a disaster for rugby league in WA if done incorrectly.

When John Singleton had Bluetongue Stadium he payed clubs to bring their home games there.

Give me V'Landys over David Gallop and the other goons we have had in charge over the years anyday.

They go where the cash is.

Cause other teams don't have the Bear name. That atleast early on will have the appeal

Why the f**k would any games be taken to NSO when the NSW Government has just spent millions of dollars on Sydney Football Stadium, Parramatta Stadium, Brookvale and Penrith Football Stadium?

It's like using an old thunderbox that has shit all over it and infested with cockroaches after building 3 state of the art shithouses that have a seat warmer, bidot and air conditioning.

Yep, one game for $1Mill a year from the ns bears leaguse club sounds fair.

Good luck selling games at that rate. $300k is the going rate in most cases.

Most Sydney clubs likely will draw lower in Perth. That is the game you would take over
