Wakefield Sign Catic

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have announced the signing of Australian utility man Ned Catic.

The 27-year-old has moved to the Super League club from Sydney Roosters after signing a two-year contract.

Catic, who can play prop or second row, takes Wakefield's last overseas quota place alongside half-backs Ben Jeffries and Sam Obst.

"We are delighted to have signed a player of Ned's experience and quality," said coach Tony Smith.

"He is exactly the sort of player we have been looking for to complete the picture for 2006.

"He is a tough, robust prop who can play 80 minutes, and has been in two NRL Grand Finals so brings bags of experience with him."

Woooooo! :D

Yet another overated crap Aussie. that takes their overseas total to 12 players for next year. Abs**tely disgusting from a so-called 'Heartland' club.

How about some junior development please?

Wakefield, you are a disgrace, set to be relegated in 2006.

Can't wait to he gets knocked on his ass in the ESL since that is all that seemed to happen to him in the NRL.

Wakefield must be pushing London for imports now. They already have four more than Les Catalans. If all of them start, there will only be one British player in the starting 13!Shocking.Wakefield are the type of club that is holding Super League back.

Shocking stuff. Is he really any better than a local player?

Keith Mason for one has recently gone to Cas, surely Wakey could have outbid them for him?

I make it about 2 more signings needed to make there be more Aus/NZ players playing each round than British players.

He is crap and that is putting aside my hatred for the Roosters, he is only notable for two things:

Running into Petero Civinoceva and concussing himself.

Getting absolutely smashed by Awen Guttenbeil.

IIRC they are only having a squad of about 23,which means more Aussies than Brits in thier squad.

One of the key issues here is that Wakefield refuse to pay players more than they think they are worth... and with players agents ruling the roost in the UK.. then that leaves little option.

I believe that Trinity were interested in Sculthorpe from Wigan... but he out priced himself...

as for Mason... he was a former Trinity Junior before going to Melbourne... when he came back, having played a handful of games, he was asking an astonishing amount of money to re-sign for the club... (more than twice the contract Catic is on... a player who has been a regular with one of the top clubs in Australia...and with over 100 first grade games under his belt) Mason went on to fail to make the grade with Saints, yet still wants huge money.

There are a handful of quality players in the uk, they gravitate to the top 3 or 4 clubs... of the rest, the majority are not prepared to do what it takes to constantly improve...

Trinity are one club that has genuinely offered young british players the chance to play first grade and improve... players like Ellis, Westwood, Mason (himself), Hudson, Jackson, Griffin, Snitch, etc... (this season we have taken a pot on Buchanan, Whittle, White and youngsters Ferguson and Lewis... )we even seek out promising young overseas guys like Elima and Jeffries and players with much to prove like Korkidas.

Probably could bid stupid money for UK players but would that be in the best long term interest of the club or the game in general... The fact is that young english players have an over inflated value of their worth... and trinity have a backroom staff who will not play their game.. others will folow soon and the players and their agents must be more realistic.

oh and Wakefield have a first grade squad of 26

So every club in the league can afford to sign British players apart from Wakefield?Surely overseas players would be more expensive as they would need accomodation, transport etc and a contract big enough to lure them away from the NRL.

You seem to have a very simplistic view on life...

take Ellis as an example.. we offered him a fintastic deal.. he chose Leeds for less..

based on his attitude, progress and form we offer Snitch a realistic deal.. he chooses Huddersfield for considerably more money.

Westwood offered a great deal chose Warrington..

Hudson was under 21 GB captain at Wakey..we wanted to keep him...he chose Cas...

we put funding and business plans to build a new stadium.. the council are unwilling to allocate a site.. we demonstrate against that and are roundly accused of trying to sponge money from the council...

Huddersfield, Hull, Warrington, Wigan et al are able to atract people based simply on the facilities.. Look at Bradfords recruitment... if they dont improve their facilities they will fall behind..

there are many vaguries that come to bear on these things... it is never black and white..

2 other things
1) If my club is winning I really couldnt care less who is inside the shirt... I do not give a damn about the international game.. rl is trinity and trinity is rl as far as I am concerned.
2) STOP CALLING ME SHIRLEY!

the league has 12 clubs and one of them contains no british players what so ever! at least 2 others have the same ratio of players.. most have between 7 and 10 non-english players.

ps I watched Liverpool vs Chelsea last night and remember seing just 2 English qualified players.. on the same day that england were declared 2nd seeds for the world cup.. seems to me that elite players blossom and flourish in a tough environment.. perhaps its our methods of producing elite players that needs attention... and I believe that the situation will get worse (if thats the right word!) before it gets better.

fair play to Wakey, anyone decent they bring through the academy has to get sold to leeds for some reason.

Its not a great signing but i suppose its a bit better than others they've done, at least catic has been round the roosters first team, i hadn't actually heard of duncan macgilvray since the WCC in 1997.

The club with no British players is Les Catalans, obviously.I assume Harlequins will have a similar overseas ratio to Wakey, but I can't think of another club.

Oh and FWIW,the Snitch to Huddersfield for lots more money is a myth made up by Wakefield fans.He is on a similar contract to the one offered by Wakey.
