Wallabies 31 man Tour squad

When Eddie Jones called on the Wallabies newcomers to appear from behind a door and parade for the media yesterday, there was a long pause before the Australian coach uttered: "The boys are a bit shy."

This prodded the five new faces into at last making an appearance. They were appreciably shy. And three of the five - flanker Leroy Houston, centre-winger Digby Ioane and front-rower Tatafu Polota-Nau - did look like boys. Big boys.

But by the end of next month, this trio, who didn't know which way to look when surrounded by cameras and microphones, will be more than shy boys. They are bound to be big boys handed big missions as all are in line for Test spots during the Wallabies' tour of France, England, Ireland and Wales.

Jones has been under scrutiny recently for being too conservative in his selections and unable to stop a losing Test side from becoming full of fossils.

So it was with delight that he yesterday announced that in his 31-man touring squad were eight players who had not played Test football.

advertisement - story continues below

The squad is brimming with vibrancy and the excitement that comes with an influx of youth. And the push for new blood is no public relations exercise, with the coach stressing if a newcomer is good enough, he will soon find himself in the Test team.

That happened in 2002, when Matt Giteau came from the Canberra club ranks to make his first Test appearance in London. Ditto Stephen Hoiles last year, when he was selected from outside the training squad to become a Test representative in Europe.

Houston, Ioane and Polota-Nau are on a similar path; like Giteau three years ago, they have no Super 12 experience, instead using the club and Australian under-21 platform to convince Jones they are of international standard.

The two other newcomers - second-rower Adam Wallace-Harrison and utility back Cameron Shepherd - have been sighted in Super 12. However, the lesser-known trio are more likely to make the big step on this tour.

Polota-Nau is a stand-out hooker. Ioane is a deceptive midfield player with an impressive step off both feet. And Jones is so enthused by Houston that, at 18, the Eastwood back-rower is destined to be Australia's youngest Test representative since Mark Loane.

"I hope all the new guys have got tucked away somewhere a piece of paper which says that their goal for this tour is to make the Test squad," Jones said.

Nearby, Houston was clearly overwhelmed by the occasion. Surrounded by cameras, he uttered: "Sorry boys, I'm very camera shy … But this has all been so awesome, awesome, awesome." Camera shy, maybe. But the TV types lapped it up. It was refreshing, refreshing, refreshing.

On his first trip to Europe, Houston is expecting a "lot of rock star stuff". And the benefits of being a Wallaby will begin this morning when he meets the Australian cricket team - with the two sides involved in an SCG training session.

"That'll be awesome, too," Houston beamed. "But I don't want to face any of their bowlers though. Too fast for me. That ball hurts."

Jones has barred Houston from the nets. He wants his star pupil next month hurting others on a football field, not this month hurting from red grenades.

THE SQUAD

Al Baxter, Brendan Cannon, Mark Chisholm, Matt Dunning, Rocky Elsom, Scott Fava, David Fitter, Adam Freier, Mark Gerrard, Matt Giteau, George Gregan (capt), Matt Henjak, Greg Holmes, Leroy Houston, Digby Ioane, Lloyd Johansson, Chris Latham, Hugh McMeniman, Drew Mitchell, Tatafu Polota-Nau, John Roe, Mat Rogers, Wendell Sailor, Nathan Sharpe, Cameron Shepherd, George Smith, Lote Tuqiri, Morgan Turinui, Adam Wallace-Harrison, Phil Waugh, Chris Whitaker.

Additional players named in Australia A squad for match against French Barbarians in Bordeaux on November 1: Adam Ashley-Cooper, Alister Campbell, David Croft, Scott Daruda, Nic Henderson, Lachlan MacKay, Brett Sheehan.

Good to see lots of young guys getting a go. I hope some of them make the 22. The A side isn't too bad either. Drauda and Sheehan both good prospects.

Also, good to Cameron sheppard in there. He is a good prospect. Should develop well under John Mitchell at Perth. Apparently Mitchell encourages alcoholism :)

Seriously, he is a good player.

Polota-Nau is a hooker, and a very good one at that, has signed with the Waratahs next year(I think) he is hailed as the next big thing in aussie rubgy has the running game of a Kevin Mealamu and the pin point throwing of a Gary Botha. Born and raised in Australia his family come from Tonga in fact his dad grew up in the same village as Totai Kefu and played rugby with him.

Leroy Houston is a flanker signed a 2 year deal with the Tahs came over from NZ when he was about 12 he plays for Eastwood at the moment. His cousin (Chris Tutura) has just signed with the doggies in league, his dad was the guy that discovered Carlos Spencer.

Cheers for that.

For the record, I still think Jeremy Paul has a bit to offer. The rest should do him the world of good. He should have a couple of very good years.

I would be dropping Whittaker to the bench and giving Henjak as much game time as I could he is the next big half for the Aus team in the coming years.

So has Matt Dunning, but he has been picked. I take your point. This time last year he was the next big thing.

Dunning of course was going to get picked. Jones sees him as something big and we are desperate for props. I hope Hoiles has a better super 12 next year although it will be very competitive like it was this year.

Pretty much spot on. TPN was on the Brumbies books last season, and has signed for the Waratahs to back up Frier. He was a former backrower in his schoolboy days but the Brumbies had the vision to turn him into a prop, but that hindered his running ability, therefore his final conversion to hooker. He's extremely quick, is big and he's black.

Houston only started playing rugby maybe 2-3 years ago, even though his dad was the coach who blooded Carlos Spencer at 16 years of age over in NZ. I've watched him play before for the Woods, and he's a huge 18 year old. He's abit of an upright runner, but his leg drive is very good. Loves the ball in hand, and when in open space can make some big metres. I expect him to forge himself as the first choice #8 after the tour. His big positives is that he can be lifted, so it makes up for Waugh and Smith as poor line-out options.

We finally have some tough men in the line up. I saw the footage of Houston on fox sports, he was overcome with so much emotion, he's definately one player that will not let us down. He's so hardcore he's got black teeth lol.

Houston and Tuatara used to play League together for the Hornsby Lions. But i didn't know they were cousins.

Phoney, Tatufu's running game is great, however his lineout throwing needs work. This is his first year of football at Hooker and he is doing an outstanding job of picking up the trade. His throwing considering its his first year is great and is the only obvious aspect of his play that needs improvement

Interesting move having Mitchell at 13. I would live to see McMeniman step up to the lock role. Chisolm doesn't have that lineout dominance. I feel he would be a better 6.

We all see Dunning as something big, but then again I see Amanda Vanstone as something big too.
