Wallabies name 45 to train
September 15, 2005

SEVEN members of the Australia Under-21 team have been included in a 45-man Wallabies training squad for November's tour of Europe.

The touring party of 30 will be selected on October 10.

The Under-21 representatives include hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau, flanker Leroy Houston, five-eighth Scott Daruda and outside backs Digby Ioane and Cameron Shepherd.

"We've selected a squad of 45 because there are still a number of players we want to have a look at medically and physically, before finalising a group for the Spring tour," said Wallabies coach Eddie Jones. The tour includes Tests against France in Marseille, England at Twickenham, Ireland at Lansdowne Road and Wales in Cardiff.

Training squad: Adam Ashley-Cooper, Al Baxter, Alister Campbell, Brendan Cannon, Mark Chisholm, David Croft, Scott Daruda, Matt Dunning, Rocky Elsom, Scott Fava, David Fitter, Adam Freier, Mark Gerrard, Matt Giteau, George Gregan, Nic Henderson, Matt Henjak, Greg Holmes, Leroy Houston, Digby Ioane, Lloyd Johansson, Alex Kanaar, Chris Latham, David Lyons, Lachlan MacKay, Hugh McMeniman, Drew Mitchell, Stephen Moore, Stirling Mortlock, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Jeremy Paul, Clyde Rathbone, John Roe, Mat Rogers, Wendell Sailor, Nathan Sharpe, Brett Sheehan, Cameron Shepherd, George Smith, Ben Tune, Lote Tuqiri, Morgan Turinui, Phil Waugh, Chris Whitaker, Bill Young.

Not enough young front rowers there. Some good young players though, so hopefully they tour.

Needs more Tim Donnely.

How many fly-halves do you want to take! There is already 3 reseve fly haves including Giteau! Doneely is solid, but I would not be banking on him winning a test match!

Does he not deserve a chance?

First question, no when there are better options.

Second question, lock from the QLD REDS.

I hop Dibdy Ioane is pick for the tour . He could be the first Samoan to chosen for the Wallabies .
I seen play and he would be a force to be recon with .

Anyone who is watching Sydney Club Rugby must acknowledge the current group of Easts youngsters....

Luke Burgess has been THE form halfback in the competition, with Sheehan close behind. I understand they do already have Whitaker, Gregan, Henjak and Sheehan, but if they want to build for the 2007 World Cup - Gregan and Whitaker are not the way to go.

When someone tells me what Adam Ashey-Cooper and Mark Chisholm have done so well to have debuted in the test arena this year, I will be very interested. There are quite a few players I can name that could be picked ahead of these two. The fact they are Brumbies must have helped their cause, even though the Brumbies didn't even make the finals.

Ashely-Cooper plays for a North Sydney team that is on the lower end of the table and only played a handful of Super 12 games this year. When you compare this to Rex Tapuai who captained NSW against Samoa and is one of the leading try scorers in the competition this year or Tim Donnelly, who the experience of a tour or even training will only improve the depth of the Wallabies.

Chisholm is the most overrated player in the Wallabies squad. He adds nothing in regards to general play. He possesses no aggression in lineouts either. He may be tall, but just look at how our lineout went. Adam Wallace-Harrison who is CAPTAINING Easts at a young age is just as tall and can play on the side of the scrum. With wraps coming from ACT about how he plays, they have been met.

Other people that should feel hard done by include Matt Hodgeson and PETER HEWAT!

Australian Rugby has gone downhill MASSIVELY starting from the top levels. Something has to be done immediately if we want to give the enxt World CUp a shakeup and to improve the general squads of the 4 provincial teams.

Burgess is probally a year or two off getting a run. Hewat should have been picked, I can't beleive he didn't get picked. Ashley-Cooper is picked becuase he is versatile. He can play from 10-15 and that is the reason behind him getting the nod over a few others!

Can he play those positions at test a test standard? He obviously can't at club level, Norths are going very bad.

Peter Hewat is a very very average player. He had a lucky Super12. He probably wouldn't make a 1st Division NPC team.

I beleive he COULD! The thing is with all the players you are telling me about, you are looking for a bench player. Therfore you need someone who CAN play in various positions. Hewat can play 11, 14, 15. Wheras Ashley-Cooper can play in the centres as well. You see the difference! More versatile. He may not be the greatest player in each position but he is versatile!

The fact that he is dominating Sydney Club Rugby this year proves how stupid you are.

He has been dominating club rugby here for five years. It was only this year they got lucky and finally gave him a chance. He took full advantage of that chance and has shown up previous NSW managements, who CONTINUE to disregard real talent.

Hewat can play 11, 14, 15.

Hewatt has played 10 before.

I would go on tour with that squad playing the following backline:

9. Sheehan
10. Rogers
11. Gerrard
12. Gitaeu
13. Tune
14. Rathbone
15. Mitchell

20. Whitaker
21. Turinui
22. McKay

Doesn't matter who plays in the backs when the forwards are getting hammered.
Club form isn't a great measure, Baxter and Dunning looked good at S12 level but were smacked around at test level. Until the blokes mentioned get a run at the NSW, QLD or ACT levels than let them run around more infront of the huge crowds.

Baxter and Dunning weren't the best in Super 12. Average to say the least. Because Super 12 isn't scrum based they weren't shown up.

Anyway the Aus team forward pack doesn't look like changing. What happened to its time for change Eddie?
