Wally M awards

I've been reading a lot about rugby league history and it's beginnings in Australia of late (thanks Mr Fagan) and I've realised how much of a rough deal poor old Wally Messenger gets due the enormous shadow cast by his brother, Herbert.

Wally must have been a very good player to achieve what he did, but will mainly always be remembered as Dally's brother.

So I thought that maybe we could nominate a few people for the Wally M awards. Those blokes who may have been good players (good enough to play first grade - no mean feat) but not quite good enough to get out of their brother's shadows.

The names that come to mind for me straight up are blokes like Heath Lewis, Graham Pearce, Don Price and Glen Mortimer.

Would anyone else care to nominate a player for a Wally M Award? :)

Matt Johns, fantastic player, behind some of the games superstars (Freddy, Loz etc), but will always be remembered as Joey's brother.

Scott Lewis (the middle Lewis brother) was actually quite a good player, played for Wynnum Manly and also was signed by the Broncos for their inaugural 1988 season, never a superstar like his older brother, but quite a decent QRL player.

Ian Hindmarsh

Peter Provan

Greame Wynn

But the ultimate - Mark, Gary and Glenn Ella.

Glenn Mortimer played for the Sharks - it's his own stupid fault.

Steve Ella was a cousin to the other Ella's. Not quite the same mate :)

That's a good observation to make. Wally M didn't quite have the natural & unpredicatable football instincts of Dally M, but he was almost as good a long range kicker (place/drops). He played a lot of Aust rules in Sydney as a teenager.

Wally M played two Tests for Australia v England in 1914 (including the famous Rorke's Drift SCG Test), and kicked 3 goals in Australia's 12-7 win over the Poms in Brisbane.

Unfortunately the outbreak of WW1 ended rep football, and Wally M's chance to play more games for Australia and go on a Kangaroo tour was gone.

At the time he was a highly regarded footballer, but as time has passed by, Dally M cast Wally M into the shadows of obscurity.

Jared Bulgarelli has had the same issues
Ben Ikin has long been in the feminate shadow of Anthony.

seriously, what about the poor 4th walters boy... i forget his name. But Steve was arguably the greatest hooker in modern day history. Kevin was a superb 5/8th for Brisbane and QLD and formed one of the great halves combinations with Langer, and Kerrod was more then a handy FGer, possibly played for QLD aswell?... i think the 4th made it as far as QLD cup... poor bugger

Beau Mundine, unfortunaltely his cousin was a loud mouth and i guess he probably screwed it up for his other cousin that played for the broncos last year as well.

Peter Coyne - brother of Mark played a lot of footy for the dragons but was always in marks shadow

Also at the dragons Jason Stevens and his brother Paul who spent most the time in reserve grade.

Even though Jason Cayless has won a premiership I guess he lives in his brother Nathan's shadow.

When they were younger Craig Kimmorley.

There were two others - Andrew and Brett . I think both played U18 reps for QLD and a bit of ist grade around Brisbane.
