Warne picks up two
February 11, 2004
SHANE Warne picked up two wickets here today to start his cricket comeback.
Warne: successful return / David Crossling
Warne, playing for a Victorian second XI, had Queensland Academy of Sport captain Adam Nye caught behind for 46 and then trapped Steve Farrell lbw for two, two overs later.
He had 2-24 from 12 accurate overs, while Queensland was 4-193 in reply to Victoria's first innings of 5 (dec)-379.
Warne's former Test and state team-mate Paul Reiffel was umpiring at his end and took a couple of seconds before ruling Farrell was out.
Warne resumed playing cricket yesterday after a 12-month doping suspension, but had to wait until late today for a bowl because of lengthy rain delays.
Victorian captain Peter Roach brought Warne on about 90 minutes before the scheduled end of play at Jubilee Oval.
The crowd had swelled to a few hundred and Warne received warm applause at the start of his first over.
Warne, who missed the opening day of the match Monday so he could serve out the last day of his suspension, scored 11 runs Tuesday before he was caught behind off Steve Magoffin. His dismissal prompted Victoria's declaration.
Warne, who is pushing for selection in the Australian side for the test series in Sri Lanka next month, is also expected to bowl in a limited-overs match against Tasmania on Saturday.
Australia's leading bowler with 491 test wickets, Warne was suspended last year after his urine sample from a random drug test revealed traces of hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride, diuretics which are banned in sport.
He said he took the diuretics - a fluid loss tablet - for the sake of vanity only. He wanted to look good in front of the television cameras, on the recommendations of his mother, Brigitte.
