Hull 16-30Warringtonengage Super League, KC Stadium, Friday September 16

Andrew Johns maintained his perfect start to life as a Warrington player as he helped his new team defeat Hull 30-16 at the KC Stadium. The Australian international failed to hit the heights of his debut performance against Leeds but still played his part in a victory that means Paul Cullen's side will be at home in the first round of the play-offs.

The Wolves could now finish as high as third in the table, providing in-form Bradford fail to win against St Helens on Saturday night.

A lacklustre start from Hull cost them dear as their Powergen Challenge Cup hangover continued on their first home appearance since winning the trophy at Cardiff.

Warrington managed to score on their first real raid into their opponents half as Logan Swann accepted a delayed pass from Lee Briers to burst through.

The New Zealand international was soon on the score sheet again as he had the simple task of diving over after Brent Grose had managed to offload the ball next to the line with three Hull defenders in attendance.

Grose turned from provider to scorer for the Wolves' third try of the first half as Hull shot themselves in the foot by surrendering possession on the attack.

Richard Swain's long pass out wide was well read by Briers and, although the Welshman didn't have the pace to make it to the line, Hull were left short of numbers in defence and Grose took full advantage to score next to the posts.

Johns managed to kick two out of three conversions to put the away team 16-0 up and seemingly on their way to an easy night's work.

Hull finally came to life with the arrival of forwards Paul King and Andy Thackray from the bench, although they had already lost Danny Brough with a serious leg injury.

John Kear's troops dominated the final 10 minutes of the first half as they finally tested the Wolves' defence.

However, for all their efforts, the Airlie Birds were only able to score once when Stephen Kearney fought his way over, Paul Cooke adding the extras.

Warrington picked up the first points after the break when Johns slotted over a penalty, but the early momentum was with the home side and they got their second try of the night after Chris Bridge had been ordered to the sin-bin.

With the Wolves down to 12 men, Cooke was quick to notice space out wide and his looping pass allowed Nathan Blacklock to walk over for his first of the contest.

The score lifted the home crowd as the Black and Whites piled on the pressure with Blacklock and Richie Barnett Jnr, who will be moving to the Halliwell Jones Stadium next season, both going close.

They were made to pay for their misses, though, when a subdued Johns finally came to life with a high bomb that bounced kindly for Toa Kohe-Love to touch down.

The centre put the icing on the cake with his second of the match five minutes later when he only had to canter in under the posts after a fine break on the left by Bridge.

Cullen even had the luxury of taking Johns off in the closing minutes safe in the knowledge that the Newcastle Knight would get the chance of playing in front of the Wire faithful one more time before he returns Down Under.

A late try from Blacklock, which Cooke converted, closed the gap to 14 points, but it was no more than a consolation score for Hull, who now know they will be on the road next weekend.

Whoa, php code!

Looks like a big crowd at the Wire for a home paly-off next week...

And the St Helens-Bradford game will sort out who has to face who.
