The Vodafone Junior Warriors snared a 30-22 victory in their first outing to wind up the 2008 Trillian Trust Auckland Rugby League Community Carnival Week yesterday (Sunday).

Facing an Auckland Selection, the Tony Iro-coached side conceded an early try but were never behind again as they outscored their opponents six tries to four at Mt Smart Stadium No 2.

Prop Eddie Purcell, interchange players Alehana Mara and Constantine Mika plus winger Nafe Seluini all scored in the first 40 minutes to give the Vodafone Junior Warriors a 22-6 lead.

With a rearranged line-up they added two more tries in the second spell through halfback Angus Cameron and impressive loose forward Elijah Taylor while the Auckland combination produced three touchdowns. Grabbing two of them was lean winger Graham Woodhouse giving him three for the day after his first effort in the fifth minute of the contest.

The trial was the first of four in the Vodafone Junior Warriors' build-up to their debut in the National Youth Cup under-20 competition kicking off this year.

The match was also a trial for the newly-named Auckland Vulcans - to be coached by Bernie Perenara - as they prepare for this year's New South Wales Cup (formerly the New South Wales Premier League).

The Vodafone Junior Warriors - using a different group of players – will meet the Auckland Selection again in the curtain raiser to next Friday night's Vodafone Warriors-Newcastle NRL trial at North Harbour Stadium.

As a finale to a week of activities, the Community Carnival Day was adversely affected as Auckland's golden summer chose an unfortunate time to break. Despite that 4000 fans came through the gates during the course of the day.

Vodafone Warriors players had signing sessions, posed for photographs and ran coaching clinics while the Vodafone Cheerleaders also ran clinics. Auckland Rugby League clubs were set up to take registrations and there was a range of entertainment provided including amusement rides for kids.

A gold coin collection at the gates produced a total of $3400 to be split between the Vodafone Warriors' two major charity partners Kidz First Children's Hospital and DebRA New Zealand (Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association).
