in the end it wasn't a 40/20 though, as Gordon.. or was it Zillman.. had been ruled to have stepped over the sideline with the ball

Granted. The Channel Nine commentary suggested the touch judge ruled he had his foot on the line when he played at the ball. The Fox commenatary called it correctly.

Punting on 40/20 for this reason alone is ridiculous. The ball is technically not out untill it touches either the ground (on the line or outside it) or hits something outside of the field of play (which can be a player who is outside the field of play). I've seen at least 2 examples this year where it was called a 40/20 by the TV but it in fact was a player running the ball out when you get into technicalities.

Anyway, anyone who bets on it is a fool.
