Vodafone Warriors' chief executive officer Mick Watson today announced the signing of 25 year-old London Broncos' goal-kicking centre Tony Martin on a three year deal, through to the end of 2006.
The signing allows Martin to fulfil his desire to return to the NRL after 2 years in the British Super League, having previously played for the Melbourne Storm.
"Daniel Anderson and I are very excited about Tony being with the club for at least the next 3 seasons. We were initially interested in talking to Tony two years ago but the timing wasn't quite right," said Watson.
"The skill set that Tony will bring to the club is three-fold.
"Tony has pace, is tenacious and consistent in defence, and is a proven goal-kicker with a current success rate of over 80% in the British Super League.
"Tony is an integral part of the London Broncos side in the British Super League and is the side's main source of points.
"Furthermore he is considered one of the "Iron Men" of that competition, with his ability to play with injuries seeing him rarely miss a game," said Watson.
Martin was a Queensland junior sent to London by the Brisbane Broncos to gain first grade experience. He debuted for the London Broncos as a 17 year old and in his two stints there has now played over 100 first grade matches and scored over 500 points.
When the Melbourne Storm was established in the NRL, they recruited Martin as a 19 year-old. Martin played three seasons for the Storm, maturing into a world-class performer. He scored the Storm's first try in their 1999 NRL Premiership victory.
Last season he was threatening the world record for most consecutive kicks at goal with 29 straight successes when he missed an attempt off his own try. This year he has played 20 games, for 20 tries and 55 goals at a success rate over 80%.
"Tony is an experienced, premiership winning centre with an outstanding success rate of goal-kicking. Under Daniel Anderson's coaching I firmly believe he can realise his dream of playing State-of-Origin for his native Queensland," said Watson.
