Warriors trial match called off.

The Warriors' preparations for the upcoming NRL season have been hit by the Covid-19 outbreak in Melbourne, with next week's trial match against the Storm cancelled.

The Warriors were due to have their first hit out of the year in Redcliffe, near Brisbane, next Saturday. However, the Storm announced the game has been called off after the Queensland government on Friday closed its borders to the Greater Melbourne region for a 14-day period.

Queensland's stance comes after the state of Victoria entered a five-day lockdown in response to 13 Covid-19 cases being linked to a quarantine hotel, amid fears the new strain of the virus could be spreading in the community.

The border closures have wreaked havoc on next week's NRL All Stars fixture in Townsville, with seven Storm players - including six Māori All Stars - ruled out of the fixture.

The Warriors, who are based on the NSW Central Coast, have also been affected, although not to the same extent.

With both the Warriors and Storm agreeing to only use players who played 12 NRL games or less in 2020, the majority of the Kiwi club's first-choice lineup were being saved for the second trial against the Gold Coast on February 27.

However, the cancellation has still robbed new coach Nathan Brown the chance to get a closer look at his rising stars and fringe players, while preventing those returning from injury, such as props Leeson Ah Mau, Bunty Afoa and Jackson Frei, of a much-needed run.

The game against the Titans in Lismore, northeastern NSW, is now the Warriors' only pre-season match before they open their 2021 campaign against the same team at Central Coast Stadium on March 13.

I am hoping that the NRL is planning a response to the new world of Covid rapid border closures due to the new mutant strains.

In a nut shell, what has changed, is that the new variants spread more easily and people become infectious much quicker.

That is why VIC closed down rapidly and places around the world are doing the same.

I was debating this point with folk on another site, and unfortunately within twenty four hours the Auckland region has gone for a rapid lock down.

The good news is that these outbreaks, no matter what strain, are stamped out by lock downs.

The NRL needs to play the game in one state this year.

Remove the interstate travel restrictions from the list of things which could disrupt the competition.

I have no idea what they will decide, I mean it must be tempting to just roll the dice and see what they can get away with...

However the header of this thread....is game cancelled,,,so I would plan for that reality...because that is what is actually happening in real time.

Hopefully the NRL were following the recently ended NFL season, as they had to juggle games due to covid, reschedule teams byes, postpone Thursday games to the following Tuesday/Wednesday, etc, but somehow managed to finish the season on time.
On a game by game basis, some teams suffered from poor timing with covid protocols and had their teams decimated due to covid and the closest contacts. eg the Wide Receivers on a team all had to miss a game etc because they hadnt cleared the protocol in time for the game.
Lets hope the NRL isnt winging it and has multiple schedule options.

All seven new signings will line up for the Vodafone Warriors for the first time in the club’s only NRL trial against the Gold Coast Titans at Oakes Oval in Lismore on Saturday.

Four of the newcomers – winger Marcelo Montoya, centre Euan Aitken, prop Addin Fonua-Blake and second rower Bayley Sironen – are all named in the starting combination while middle forwards Ben Murdoch-Masila and Kane Evans plus half Sean O’Sullivan are listed on the 11-man interchange.

The match will also be head coach Nathan Brown’s first outing in charge as he sets his side for the first of two match-ups against the Titans in the space of two weeks.

The two sides face each other again in their opening game of the NRL season at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford on March 13.

It’s interesting, about 9 of the starters I’d have in our 17 on game day, with about 4 or 5 others on the bench. So, we’re fairly close to full strength.

I know you don’t look into trials too much, but I’m really keen to see how we go with a team this close to full strength

NFL treats trial games as what they are - an opportunity for star players to get injured before the season starts. They will play 2nd and 3rd string players in the first 2 trial games. In the third trial game the top players will play the first quarter. Thats it.
They also cull players they feel arent up to the mark. The rest go to the practice squad.
