Don't want to steal your thunder oz mate but you're leaving it a little late this week and I don't want to deny kipper his chance to do his personal for and against chart. Maybe its the surprise that we're playingon a fridaythat has put everyone off.
Anyway the team is as follows:
1.Ivan Cleary
2.Henry Fa'afili
3.John Carlaw
4.Clinton Toopi
5.Justin Murphy
6.Lance Hohaia
7.Motu Tony,
8.Jerry Seuseu
9.PJ Marsh
10.Mark Tookey
11.Awen Guttenbeil
12.Ali Lauitiiti
13.Wairangi Koopu

Interchange: Brent Webb, Justin Morgan, Francis Meli, Iafeta Palea'aesina, Richard Vilisanti, Sione Faumuina(2 to be omitted).
Anderson has indicated he will be going for a four forward bench so it looks like Brent Webb and Francis Meli will miss out, although Meli is practically a forward anyway and may be deemed to have more experience going into this match ahead of Faumuina. Its going to be a hard battle and at Marathon a place where I don't think the warriors have ever won. In fact the only victory I can remember against them was the 42-0 drubbing at the end of 99. If we had Jones and Campion in the team I would feel fairly confident about a warriors win, without them, i'm not so sure.

Yes, it's a tough one to call Joe, especially without two of our top guns.

Same applies to Newcastle, missing some of their top players. Those young guys who have been waiting in the wings will have a lot to prove.

Dare I say it, Knights by 2

No matter what, it's great the Warriors have finally got a Friday night game !!

A win for the New Zealand Warriors against the Newcastle Knights' on the weekend could put the Warriors into the NRL top three. The make-up of the Warriors has been distorted with the knee injury to Stacey Jones, while lock Kevin Campion is unavailable due to his commitments with the Queensland side. Motu Tony, who featured in 19 games last year in a variety of positions, will wear the No.7 jersey and hooker PJ Marsh will assume some of Jones' responsibilities. The Warriors' record without Jones last year gives them little reason for optimism - one game, one loss. But they showed last weekend in their 66 minutes without their diminutive halfback that they have more strings to their bow than a classy No.7. "His (Jones) leadership and kicking game are a big loss, but it's that last-tackle kick -- he's very composed under pressure," Warriors coach Daniel Anderson said. "We just have to concentrate on what we've been doing well." The Warriors have lost only once since a round three defeat on their own turf at Ericsson Stadium at the hands of the Knights. Since then the New Zealanders have bludgeoned North Queensland and the Northern Eagles in winning five matches and moving into outright fourth on the ladder. "They have been one of the form teams along with us, the Bulldogs and Brisbane," Newcastle coach Michael Hagan said. "They have a big forward pack. Marsh at No.9 is very good for them." Meanwhile, the Warriors 2002 captain Monty Betham is already riding a bike after undergoing a knee surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament earlier in the season.

17/05/2002
The new Warriors halves combination is ready to take on the might of Newcastle.
Lance Hohaia and Motu Tony will pair up for the first time in the NRL tonight.
Hooker and fellow ball player PJ Marsh says he has no doubt the three of them will be able to cause plenty of headaches for the Knights.
Marsh says Stacey Jones' kicking game is the one major factor they will miss, but it is time to spread the responsibility around.

Well, I am travelling up the freeway from Sydney for my first ever game at Marathon. I hope the Warriors justify my decision to go and watch them live for the first time. I also whacked $20.00 on the Warriors @ $2.80 and $5.00 on P J Marsh @ $24.00. Both good things.

On the actual game, Anderson has decided to run with four forwards on the bench and that is the crucial factor for mine. If they get some momentum, Newcastle wont know what hit them.

Legend - where did you hear the Warriors are going with a 4-forward bench? How can they go in with a 4-forward bench when I read on SMH this morningthat Anderson's already cut Villasanti? Are you counting Meli or Webb as a forward?

Righto.I guess it was alwayslikely the Warriors' first top billing in Ozsince their debut gamewouldbea King of the B's joke right before the narcissistic orgy of Origin. I'venever heard ofa fewof theseKnights players, but they're probably all bloody good and are justbegging me to make a fool out of myself againin my BOP ratings. Meanwhile the Warriors' side selectedjust doesn't sparkmy confidence the way it usually does.Isn't having Cleary as aleaderlike making Sooty the captain ofa Puppets' XIII?! How low will his bottom lip be by half-time?Where the hell is Logan Swann's career heading?Remember the 45or so tackles hecould makefor us in Campion's absence? It's all just far too distressing. If Warrior ever shows up at LWOS again,I'm sure he'll be checking on my currentdosage...

While John Carlaw is an excellent, and very underated, Newcastle boy, I think he would be very flattered by being rated as the equal of the world's best centre. Perhaps you have forgotten how Gidley took apart the NZ test side last year.
Is that a good enough bite.

warriors 20-6 late in the second half.
Just showed a clip of Toopi's try where turnstiles Gidley basically gave him a love pat to the line.

A formal apology to Cpt. IvanCleary!

I thought he was slowly drifting out of the game, but for some reason there's beena complete revival. He's 31 and fairly bright, so there shouldn't be any problems with a career after football. Is this one big effort for one last campaign?

What anabsolutedisappointment the much-vaunted Newcastle second tier turned out to be. So many errors, so many opportunities - it was almost a case of Crap and Crapper for a while, butthankfully the Warriors managed to give the game a few touches of attacking class.

That match convinced me that Warren Ryan's absolutely right about thedearth oftop-class playmakers holding the NRL back as a competition. The Warriorscan now almostlay a claim to owning 3 ofperhaps10in the entire comp. And that brings the problem of these high-profile Channel 9 games further exposing the likes of Hohaia to rich NRL clubs with moremoney than genuine league talent to divvyit out to. He MUST be retained by the Warriors long-term.

What a player Mark Tookey is turning out to be. Surely he must be in line for SOO. A straight swap with Gee would be the way to go, or Buttigieg for that matter. Last night he continually put in the big hits and big hit ups to stifle any Newcastle comeback. he also setup Toopi's second try with a barging run and a quick play the ball. But it was his last play of the game that makes you wonder if he's a halfback in a prop's body. Catching the kickoff is usually a job reserved for a back but not only did he catch it, he took it expertly while off balance stretching his leg back over the dead ball line to enforce the penalty on half way. It was an instance of skill and football awareness that could hardly be matched by anyone from the Newcastle teamall night. I know warriors fans shouldn't get carried away beating a team with so many players missing but it does feel good to register our first win in Newcastle, especially since its been the site of so many drubbings in the past.

PS the cheap shot O'Davis put on John Carlaw was one of the worst I've seen in a while. Not the physical damage it did to Carlaw but how it was a completely intentional shot to the head of a man prone on the ground and unable to defend himself. the way the channel 9 commentators laughed it off as frustration to me is appalling. If Jerry Seuseu or Ali L had done the same thing they would be labelling him a thug.

That was a bloody joke. They usually go off but because it was one of their lboys they say nothing. It almost seems likev they try not to draw attention to the thug so he doesn't get done by the judiciary.
O'Davis is a thug and did the same thing last year v The Sharks I think and should get 4-5 weeks going on recent incidents.

have you noticed how the nine comentators keep calling the warriors new zealand! I find that quite annoying when they have so many aussie players in the side in fact its bloody insulting to the whole team as they are a much better team than nz.
