Watson no longer a walk-up start

Shane Watson is no certainty to win back his Test place despite being Australia's Allan Border Medallist for the past two years.

Coach and selector Mickey Arthur made it clear there were no guarantees the injury prone all-rounder would walk back into the team once he proved his fitness.

With Australia claiming an emphatic 122-run victory over India in the first Test at the MCG and Watson's replacement, Ed Cowan, top scoring in the first innings with 68, the pressure is on.

Another strong performance from Cowan and Australia in the second Test against India at the SCG, beginning on Tuesday, will make it difficult to break up the new opening partnership with Dave Warner, who scored his maiden Test century just two matches ago.

"There's pressure developing in every position in the Australian cricket team and that's a great position to be in," Arthur said as the team arrived in Sydney on Saturday.

"For this Test we're trying to get 12 into 11 (with the return of Ryan Harris).

"When Shane Watson gets back, we've got to get 13 into 11, and when we get Patrick Cummins back, hopefully in Perth, we've got to try to get 14 into 11.

"It's a really good position to be in. I couldn't be happier. There are no guarantees for anybody."

While Watson had some good performances with the ball in 2011, claiming 14 wickets at just 19 apiece, he was poor with the bat in his primary role as an opener, averaging just 24 without a century. And the situation has been compounded by hamstring and now calf injuries, which have seen him ruled out for a fourth successive Test.

Recalled fast bowler Ryan Harris is only too aware of just how fickle the game can be when other players are given an opportunity through injury.

Rightly regarded as Australia's best fast bowler when fit, Harris now faces the prospect of carrying the drinks in Sydney following the enormous performance of Australia's new pace trio - James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus - in the Melbourne victory.

Arthur backed the current top six to continue performing against India despite another worrying batting collapse in the second innings at the MCG, when Australia lost 4-27.

"We just need to give them time, particularly our younger and less experienced players at one, two and three," Arthur said.

"Dave Warner is going to be a great player in all three forms of the game, same with Shaun Marsh, and I think Ed Cowan gave us that stability we were looking for in the first innings. He brought a bit of calmness.

"We were looking at our opening partnership.

"Our opening partnership with the bat and the ball were going to be crucial, especially at the MCG where the new ball plays such a role in determining the game.

"I believe that's the best top six we have in Australian cricket at the moment.

"Obviously when Shane Watson's fit he comes back into the equation.

"But right now, with Shane Watson injured, those are our best six batters and we need to give them every opportunity to come through."

He definitely doesn't warrant a walk up start as an opener. His performance with the bat in the last 12 months have been as inconsistent as most Australians.

If he is prepared to bat down the order I think he warrants a place as an all-rounder.

As a pure batsmen, he shouldn't be considered.

I think he would make a good replacement for Hussey at 6. I know Hussey has been contributing with the bat over the past 12 months, but I strongly believe he needs to retire

What a load of garbage. Arthur can say what he wants to give the impression that no one can just walk into the team. The fact is that Watson will stroll straight back the minute he is fit.

As long as he is bowling he is first one picked. Without the bowling still walks in but not as secure.

He should also be the first bloke picked in the ODI and T20 teams.
A bowling attack of Pattinson, Cummins, a rejuvenated Siddle, and Watson would be a tough challenge for any team

He should, and will slot straight in...

Most likely for Warner or Cowan...

But I agree with Hallatia, I'd move Hussey, last innings aside he's a very overrated player, mediocre outside Aust and in the twilight of his career... a middle order bat that can bowl is much more useful... I'd slip the captain down to 6, he's a numpty too!

isnt watson out for most of the summer anyway?

Maybe either ponting or hussey will retire at summers end, watson comes into the side at no4 IMO

The best thing about that article is that Bitch Johnson wasn't mentioned as having to be fit into the team.
Watson will come in for hussey or Handspitter eventually. Marsh or Cowan will probably get dropped first though.

yep, slow news day

he was never available anyway and an all rounder who cant bowl isn't an all rounder so he wont get back in on his batting alone

I think he scored 2 centuries in 2 tests against Sri Lanka and thats not forgettable, at least the selectors remembered them

then he had 2 months out with only big beat off games as his preparation which showed, his generally good footwork was absent, he looked like a batsman who had only been playing T/20

he's no superstar but he's better than what showed did in Sydney

Warner
Cowan
Ponting
Clarke
Watson
Hussey

And then when Hussey or Ponting retire you can bring in Marsh or Khawaja.

Yep, without the bowling doesn't demand a spot on batting alone. If he can bowl then you find a spot for him, but not at opener I suspect.

Cowan's form has offset the absence of vice-captain Shane Watson, who faces an uncertain Test future a year after claiming back-to-back Allan Border Medals.
Watson has made himself available for the Sydney Sixers' Big Bash League semi-final this weekend as he eyes a return to the national team for the Twenty20 and ODIs after the Test series against India.

Didn't the muppet state Watson would be out all summer?
