Wayne Bennett wanted to return

There was some discussion on 2CA this arvo about the fact that Wayne Bennett offered his services to the Raiders at the beginning of the season but we knocked him back due to the fact our "coach" was under contract for next season.

Obviously this wasn't in any sort of official statement from the club, but it's certainly an interesting twist to the Neil Henry fiasco.

I'm passing no judgement on whether Benny would have been a good choice for us as coach - and it does raise the question as to whether Dave Furner was always in the short term plans for the club - but if true it emphasises what a low act this whole saga has been.

I don't care what other peoples opinion of him is, I'd have welcomed Bennett back with open arms.

Pisses me off even more.

i now wish henry made his decision at the start of the season, cause we could of had bennett back.

At the time Henry was still our coach and was going to see out his contract , in hindsight we should of taken the offer for Bennett ( if true ) and p*ssed henry off, then that way he could of felt the way he has treated the club , the players and the supporters.

Let's be fair to the club, they have the dignity to honour their contracts.......

ed Henry was going some time ago and the club knew that ... they also knew which member of the family would get the next big gig at the club.

Yes, I agree Bennett would have given us heaps of cred ... and we may have even been able to keep a player like Zillman here.

Who was Bellamy before he got the gig at the Storm ?

I think Furner shares a lot of the same characteristics as Bellamy's rise to a top grade job.

In this case I think we chose well as Bennett is getting on and 20 years is a long time to supposedly harbour some Raiders love. It would have cost us a bucket load of cash to get Benny here and whilst he isn't included in the cap we still have to find the bucks.

With most of the posters wanting to sign this guy and that guy at $400 k a pop, there is fair chance we would have had $40 bucks to chuck at someone after Bennett's wage was paid.

Go Dave

DB this club suffers from lack of cred ... Benny would at the least have given us that ... and I'm quite sure he would have put all his efforts into attempting to prove that the 65% success rate he achieved at the Broncs was not based purely on having talented players coming out of his arse.

To tell you the truth I dont think he is the greatest tactical coach running around ... many of his former players have said that he is a brilliant man manager and has the ability to get the best out of his players ... he oozes respect.

A couple of years under Benny and Furner would be a far better coach to be .. much like Bellamy.

Sorry Bay that is crap.

You make your own cred.

When we got Sheensy on board he was an unknown and won 3 titles and made 4 GF's.

I think all we would have got by clutching at Bennett would have been confirmation of desperation.

Furner was the right choice. We need to get pride back in the lime green and no one has more of that than DF.

Yeah loyalty and passion dont always make great coaches but we dont need a great coach we need to restore some of the old Canberra pride first

Sheensy won 3 titles and made 4 GF's with a playing roster that complimented his coaching style.

Furner will start with an average roster and will need cred to attract better ...

... as I said before a few years under Bennett would also make Furner a better coach in the long run (bellamy I'm sure learned a lot from his days at the Broncs)

my opinion based on reading between the lines ... the fact that a decision was made on a new coach within minutes of Henry leaving forms part of that opinion
i know for a fact that the raiders offered henry a 3 year extension, so looks like you're off the mark

and what sort of money did they offer Azz ?? ... a serious offer or one that wasnt near the mark.

Btw took a pic of you and one of shifty in front of the mal stand ... would have taken a pic of you rolling the big pill but didnt realise until it was too late.
