Now here's an idea. I think we NEED more public holidays in this great country of ours. Over the past month, we've enjoy several of these such as Good Friday, Easter Monday, and most recently, ANZAC Day. Public holidays are win-win-win. If you are a student, you have a day off. If you are an employee, you get a day off work and STILL get paid. If you are a working employee, you get better rates.
I think that there should be an extra 3 public holidays per year as listed below:
February 28/29 - the last day of Summer should be a public holiday. It should give us the chance to kiss Summer goodbye for the next 9 months and enjoy one last day of what many consider the best season of the year. Leap years make the last day extra special... who wants to spend that extra day that comes around once every 4 years at work or school? It will also give people born on this day the chance to enjoy 1 birthday every 4 years. It also breaks the mononymous routine many people face, to either work or go to school/uni/tafe etc... every day from Australia day until Easter time rolls round. If this day falls on a weekend, then the public holiday carries over to the Monday.
Thanks Giving - last Monday in July - Firstly, I might sound like I'm trying to imitate North America, but let's face it... we are DAMN LUCKY to be living in such a great country. We have everything we need and are spoilt for choice. Sure you get bums walking the streets, but even those bastards love life - get money, pay no taxes, booze every night. But for us working class folk, we should be grateful of everything we have. Last weekend right in the middle of winter, we should celebrate our good fortune to live in the land down under.
Remembrance day, November 11 - So I was thinking about this topic on ANZAC day. 11/11 is the day Australia remembers ALL our soldiers who have ever died fighting for our country and our freedom. If we commemorate the feat of the ANZACs, we should do the same thing for all our other diggers who have also fallen along the way. This is the type of day that others don't find as significant as ANZAC day. If we were to have this day off, it would show it's significance and importance not only to us, but also to future generations.
