Now here's an idea. I think we NEED more public holidays in this great country of ours. Over the past month, we've enjoy several of these such as Good Friday, Easter Monday, and most recently, ANZAC Day. Public holidays are win-win-win. If you are a student, you have a day off. If you are an employee, you get a day off work and STILL get paid. If you are a working employee, you get better rates.

I think that there should be an extra 3 public holidays per year as listed below:

February 28/29
- the last day of Summer should be a public holiday. It should give us the chance to kiss Summer goodbye for the next 9 months and enjoy one last day of what many consider the best season of the year. Leap years make the last day extra special... who wants to spend that extra day that comes around once every 4 years at work or school? It will also give people born on this day the chance to enjoy 1 birthday every 4 years. It also breaks the mononymous routine many people face, to either work or go to school/uni/tafe etc... every day from Australia day until Easter time rolls round. If this day falls on a weekend, then the public holiday carries over to the Monday.

Thanks Giving - last Monday in July
- Firstly, I might sound like I'm trying to imitate North America, but let's face it... we are DAMN LUCKY to be living in such a great country. We have everything we need and are spoilt for choice. Sure you get bums walking the streets, but even those bastards love life - get money, pay no taxes, booze every night. But for us working class folk, we should be grateful of everything we have. Last weekend right in the middle of winter, we should celebrate our good fortune to live in the land down under.

Remembrance day, November 11 - So I was thinking about this topic on ANZAC day. 11/11 is the day Australia remembers ALL our soldiers who have ever died fighting for our country and our freedom. If we commemorate the feat of the ANZACs, we should do the same thing for all our other diggers who have also fallen along the way. This is the type of day that others don't find as significant as ANZAC day. If we were to have this day off, it would show it's significance and importance not only to us, but also to future generations.

Not really, it's all about productivity.

You may get more public holidays in the states, but think to yourself, would you rather choose when you holiday or have that choice made for you?

In the US people are entitled to 10 days of annual leave a year, in Australia it's 20.

More public holidays would mean less annual leave.

We also get long service leave and annual leave loading which is pretty sweet.

Oh but I'm sure extra days off wouldn't affect our annual leave. Look at APEC back in 07... we didn't lose a day because of that.

I think having 3 extra days off would be good for productivity... a chance to relax, re-energise and re-charge for the week ahead.

Long service leave is good, but many people take that to their retirement.

Because most people are ill-informed. Once you work for an employer for over 5 years and you leave, you can actually get your accumulated long service leave paid out, even though you're not allowed to take it until you've been working at a place for ten years.

While I believe there's a standard for it, can't it differ between organisations if they have an EA in place and it's stipulated in there?

I think there is a govt standard, state by state, whereby an organisation MUST allow long service at or by that point...but yeah I think companies can vary it as well

I'm actually having trouble keeping my annual leave down. I'm glad that LSL cannot be forced upon employees.

That must be a new rule, re: getting LSL paid out if you leave after 5 years. I know it is paid out if a employee is made redundant after 5 years but previously if you left on your own accord between 5 and 10 years you got nothing.

20 Days of Annual Leave
10 Days of 'Personal Leave'
12 RDO's
9 Public Holidays
104 Days Of Weekends

Picnic Day/Shopping Day/Bank Holiday depending on your industry

You are entitled to spend 42.4% of the days in a year, not at work.

When is enough time off, enough?

Obviously weekends don't count. Not everyone has RDOs. WTF is 'Personal Leave'???
