West Coast Pirates Bid News

Titans for sure should be renamed.
NQ should have been the Crocs.(Was that basketball team already around?)
The basketball team was called the Townsville Suns until the Phoenix Suns threatened to sue them in the late 1990s. I think they rebranded as the Townsville Crocodiles.

The initial NQ RL bid used a crocodile on its promotional shirt, but was forced to change its identity due to a local rugby union team being known as the Crocodiles.

The NQ RL representative team that competed in the State League was called The Marlins and wore a royal blue Jersey with white shorts. They should have just stuck with that.

The Gold Coast Vikings were the representative team for the Gold Coast and wore green and gold.

Brisbane's representative team were the Poinsettias.

It’s ironic you dont like these brands yet you’ve jumped straight on to following a new club with an nfl brand and a very generic animal lol
The Redcliffe Dolphins didn't copy an American brand. They were founded in 1947 and have been a fixture of the BRL since 1959, making them older than the Miami Dolphins.

I think you'll enjoy reading this article about the Dolphins. It goes into detail about the club's financial woes in the late 80s as NSW clubs used pokie machines to plunder the competition. The club was broke and couldn't even afford beer at one stage. Pokies were legalised in Queensland in 1992 and Redcliffe invested in projects outside of football and gambling, which has made it the powerhouse it is today. The club deserves its spot in the NRL and is an example od how an NRL club should be run.

I didn’t say they copied it, they share it though with a much bigger American club. And dolphins are not unique to north brisbane. it is a very generic brand that has a much more famous nfl club sharing it. You seem to be ok with that but not for other clubs which is weird. by your logic Redcliffe on getting the license should have used a name for the nrl side that was unique to the area and not an nfl brand.

Dolphins are commonly seen swimming in Moreton Bay and the Brisbane River and have been here long before any Human set foot on this continent.

Wild horses are not native to Australia and certainly aren't commonly seen in the Greater Brisbane area.

Eagles are known to visit the Greater Perth area.

Even though they have been around since 1947, it should be noted that Redcliffe weren't known as the Dolphins initially. ( Which is pretty typical of most older Clubs, of course)

When they changed their name officially to the Dolphins is unclear to me.

That's not saying much.

Dolphins are/were common pretty much globally, and dolphins are commonly seen in all Australian waters. Literally any costal city in Australia, and 99% of the world, could feasibly carry a dolphins brand using the standards you are laying out.

The dolphin on Redcliffe's badge looks like a Bottlenose as well, which is the most common species of dolphin in the world and the same species as Miami's mascot.
In other words, they're using literally the most generic dolphin in the world instead of a rarer endemic species like the Australian humpback or snubfin that are only found in Australian, New Guinea, and probably Indonesian waters. Though TBF I don't think that Snubfin's have been found anywhere near as far south as Moreton Bay.
Eagles are known to visit the Greater Perth area.
Same as above basically. Eagles are found on every continent except Antarctica.

Though Manly's badge looks like a bald eagle (definitely not native to Australia lol), it's meant to be a white-bellied sea eagle which is found across India, China, South East Asia, the Pacific, and Australia. Just like with Dolphins literally any costal city, and a lot of inland cities as well (basically anywhere there're large bodies of water), could feasibly carry the white-bellied sea eagle as their mascot.

BTW; though Brumbies are commonly associated with the Snowy Mountains for cultural reasons, the largest populations of feral horses in Australia actually reside in the tropics, Qld and the NT to be specific, and are common in SEQ as well. They were common in Brisbane within living memory as well, though urban development has more or less destroyed all their habitat within the city and pushed them further and further out.

In other words, using your standards, a wild horse mascot works as well for Brisbane as dolphins, sea-eagles, or any other relatively common species would.

You totally ignored my point, there is nothing unique about eagles or dolphins, they are found all over the world and are both NFL brands. If your theory is correct then going with a unique moniker to the area the club is in would bring more fans in. But of course it wouldn't as it doesn't matter what you call a club, if people want to go and watch that sport they will whatever the clubs name is.

Brisbane should have gone with Brumbies. There was a lot of anger in Brisbane about the team calling themselves the Broncos.

A name like Brisbane United, with a koala in the logo, probably would have been better as it's the official faunal emblem of Queensland and would have been a team to truly represent the nine BRL teams it replaced. Maybe even a gryphon, as it's on the Coat of Arms of Brisbane. I think an onionball club now uses the gryphon. Brisbane Gryphons has a nice sound that rhymes.

A gryphon is a hybrid between a lion and an eagle. Two BRL clubs used wild cats as their mascot (Wests Panthers and Easts Tigers) and another two used birds (Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Souths Magpies). So that's four clubs it could have represented. It's a mythological beast meant to harness the predatory powers of lions and eagles, so it could also be linked with Valleys Diehards, making it five clubs that it represents.

Guys.. Guys.. we can't keep rehashing the same old "geographical vs all-of-city" arguments over Brisbane NRL clubs now.

Rightly or wrongly, the NRL have gone for a historically "north" team.. and it's up to the Dolphins to now show that they can do the outreach to appeal beyond their traditional suburban supporter base.

Hopefully they become more of a Souths than a Manly.

Illawarra steelers was a fantastic name imo as I’m led to believe that the Illawarra region was a huge steel producer although the original badge/logo was utterly farcical.
Yes, Wollongong & Newcastle we’re the 2 big steel towns in NSW.

I found this on Wikipedia.

"The actual 'Steelers' name came after a competition was run to choose a name. The name was chosen by Dapto High School student Roger White, who was also a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL team in the United States. Roger responded to a competition published in the Illawarra Mercury Newspaper. "

Not sure I 100% believe the fan competition story. I believe there was a competition but not necessarily that was the source of the name.
The Raiders at the same time did the same thing and there is a, perhaps an urban myth, story around that.

Brumbies was already taken by ACT Rugby I think. Could be wrong, I’m not up on the Rugby mob

Not at that time, though Brumbies was always more of a Snowy Mountains/SE Australian slang for feral horses, and there've been multiple teams from the region in multiple sports that have gone by that name throughout the years.

Yes we can and bloody well should because those whom don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and RL (world wide) has f**ked this up so many times that it's unbelievable.

BTW, Redcliffe are doomed to be a Manly style shit-box club, and it's only a matter of time before Souths go the same way considering that their current success is built on the foundations of Russel Crowe's celebrity and on field success, neither of which is sustainable.

But the decision has been made - rightly or wrongly - and it's up to the Dolphins now to find their supporter base.

If/When Brisbane 3 is on the radar, then yeah there's a debate to be had whether the Jets, Firehawks, or a completely new/non-suburban "whole of Brisbane" bid is best for that.. but it looks like NZ is being lined up for team 18.

Unless Brisbane can muscle their way into pole position for team 18 (and concerns from Broncos, Titans & Dolphins about a new club standing on their toes can be addressed), that decision is probably close to a decade away.

Youngsters won't really care all that much about them being from Moreton Bay, especially with them being called The Dolphins.

I think there's potential for this team to appeal to women and girls who aren't traditional RL fans. Dolphins are a revered animal. If they help draw casual support from women and girls who couldn't care less about Broncos, Titans and Cowboys then they'll be of value to the broadcasters, which will lead to more money at the table when the broadcast rights are up for grabs.

Broncos/Murdoch will have a say over who gets the licence. They won't want another Brisbane team, but if it's the least expensive option and doesn't require them to stump up as much money as Perth or NZ 2 then they might change their mind. If it helps them sell more copies of The Courier Mail then they'll definitely be for it.

Absolute nonsense, if you wait until decisions are being made to start having the argument then it'll be too late (again).

The argument needs to be had out now, not left until it's too late to have any influence on the thinking of the people making the decisions. Of course it won't be had because there isn't one mainstream voice that stands on this side of the argument anymore, but that's beside the point.

There will inevitably be people whom push for a "traditional" club in NZ as well, so this argument, and/or other similar ones, will inevitably come up in NZ as well. So there's no getting around it, it needs to be had out.

BTW, the Redcliffe decision will force the 3rd Brisbane club (which is now inevitable so long as the NRL continues to grow), and any subsequent clubs in Brisbane, to be suburban/regional.
There's also a good chance that the 18th club will be from Brisbane, so it's already on the radar. If the money in NZ doesn't add up then odds are that Brisbane is up for the 18th license, unless of course if there're massive changes at the administrative level of the sport between now and then, which is extremely unlikely.

News will cave to another club so long as they believe that it's not a threat to the Broncos.

In other words they won't oppose a third Brisbane club, they'll just make sure that the one picked is the least threat to the Broncos, like they did with the Dolphins.

The Titans, Storm, and/or Dolphins will probably make a stink about it, but they have no real power or leverage over the NRL or ARLC, so it'll make no difference. The other clubs won't back them up either, where the next club is placed makes little difference to them once the decision has been made to expand.

The Jets would be less threatening, but don't have the resources. I reckon the Eastern Suburbs Tigers will get the licence. They're cashed up and are currently building the infrastructure needed to compete in the NRL. I cannot see Perth or NZ 2 being as NRL ready as the Eastern Suburbs Tigers by 2027.

I can't see another Brisbane team coming in the next 10 years. The Broncos and Titans would riot- Broncos would start Super League 2.0. It's got to be Perth or NZ.
