Its an interesting comparison.
Newcastle arent as pathetic in defense as the wests side were in 99 although their attack is probably on par. In fact, the magpies were always reliable to score three entertaining tries a game despite letting in 12 by halftime.
Perhaps a more apt comparison would be Balmain in 94- they were a team with a contrast of classy and truly horrendous players- ie Brasher, elias, sironen, will robinson even morvin edwards and at the lower eshlons they had John Bentley, bernard carrol, greg boruke, derrick McVey...
For the current Knights Buderus and Simpson look out of place in an otherwise sub-standard side.
Of course, for those of us who remember, Gold Coast in 93', Wests in 1984 and the inaugural Canberra side in 1982 all have solid claim to being the worst side (in the last 25 years!).
